I am a student currently taking pre-nursing courses. I just read in my Physiology book about vaccines and autoimmune diseases such as MS. Further reading revealed that there is a concern that vaccinations such as Hepatitis B could lead to MS. What does the average nurse think about this?
Is there a concern among medical professions who receive vaccinations?
Do you know of a person who became ill witih an autoimmune disease after having a vaccination?

[I thought I would not be able to work in hospitals or my nursing school wouldn't let me do clinical without my hep shots, since they are required, however, I just had to sign a waiver....which is what I do for my kids also.CassiI think the times, they are a-changing. Your children would not be allowed to attend school in my state. Nor would you be allowed to work "bare" in our hospitals. Waivers are reserved for the truly allergic.

I am female 53 and received two vaccines at the same time. One for flu and one a booster for somethingLike typhoid. I was a veryFit runner and within three weeks I was a breathless wreck. Diagnosed as having Graves disease with eye problems. Keep getting Told must be hereditary autoimmune diseases in family. There are none we know of. My father was a vet and wouldNever vaccinAte two together as said it caused Problems in animals and was generally cautious withAll vaccines.
Having had numerous vaccines at the same time for Desert Storm the only time I contested it was when they tried to give us an un-trialled combination once out on active duty. We regularly give children more than 1 vaccine at a time and my vet regularly gives my dogs more than one vaccine at a time. The only reason I can think you would have gotten typhoid was travel to a country that requires it, it is not something we would give regularly in the UK. (worked as a practice nurse for several years in the UK and regularly gave holiday advice and vaccinations)
Every state offers exemptions....either medical, religious or philosophical. I think EVERY state should offer the philosophical exemption but unfortunately they don't. My 8 year old is fully vax'ed, except we've never given the flu shot. He was about 18 months when I started looking into vaccines. My 5 year old has had a limited amount and my 9 month old hasn't had any. I don't agree with any of the vaccines because of what's in them but being pro-life I refuse those with aborted fetal tissue, and well some of the others too. Vaccines are a touchy subject and it's something that has to be thoroughly looked into. I research the disease AND the vaccine, which includes the ingredients of course. Oh and FTR....a lot of the times when you hear about these cases of these diseases cropping up....the kids are vax'ed. So the "problem" is with the vaccines, NOT the kids who aren't.

Younger nurses and parents forget that vaccines were created because children WERE DYING.
Because the vaccines are working so well, you are 100% correct that many mistakenly believe they are no longer necessary...and forgetting that these diseases have all but disappeared because of the vaccines and CAN RETURN.
One statistic is for certain: No medication on the planet is without risk and any child can have an adverse reaction to any medication, regardless of what it is. Vaccines are no different. There is no question, that there are MILLIONS more children that have received vaccines that had little to no reaction, than children that were adversely affected.

Fact: I am pro-choice, but even if I was pro-life, this would not concern me.
The reason it would not concern me is that the fetuses are not being aborted FOR THE PURPOSE of being used in medicinal development. That is a decision made by the mother for some other reason.
Keeping in mind the fact that it's a legal procedure (as of today)...would you rather have the tissues destroyed or put to a valid use that can SAVE A LIFE.

What? Maybe I am completely misunderstanding you but when diseases crop up it is because kids haven't received vaccines (making herd immunity fail), not because they have been vaccinated...
I was told by my doc after being diagnosed with a rare and poorly understood and possibly (they aren't sure) autoimmune disease, to not accept vaccinations anymore.
I know my husband and I will probably go to throes about this but I plan to put off vaccinating our kids as long as possible.

I would get a second opinion on that if I were you.
We have not been able to even diagnose autoimmune disorders for that long and I have one close friend that lost her 1-year old to whooping cough and another that was horribly scarred, for life, from chicken pox....both unvaccinated.
Are you vaccinated? If you are, then you obviously turned out ok. So why would you take the chances with your children?
I don't understand the concept of "waiting as long as possible". If your child contracts one of the childhood diseases, it is too late. That is why vaccines are preventive. Do you also understand that vaccinating your children early in life can protect them years later? What if your children gets cancer or other disease and are not able to receive vaccines at all? Having the vaccines now when they are healthy can protect them from getting sick later.
To the friends that I described above, I probably would have felt like I had voided my right to live, if i had to bury a child or my child's health/life permanently damaged on something that I could have prevented.
