why is the VA taking so long to hire you?

Published

Hey everyone. I was interviewed and offered a job at the VA at the beginning of October. I did all the things that they asked for me: physical exam, Vetpro, fingerprint and E-qip, all done in October. Until now, I haven't heard anything from them and it's already November. Is it really this long to get a job over there. Should I be worried at all? Should I keep looking for other jobs (I actually have two interviews coming up, one at the police/corrections and the other at a private hospital). I'm just trying to have some back up plan, just in case the VA thing did not work out. Any suggestions?

Rocknroll I dont' know how old you are or if you'll care about my two cents, but don't give up on the VA. The long term benefits are worth it. Take it from an RN of 15 years at the same hospital and when I turn my notice in, in about a month, I walk away with nothing - no monthly retirement or health care. Worse than that I could have decided to stay my entire career there and still have nothing. Oh yeah I do have a very small 401k, but most people with a 401k retirement have lost a lot with the economic strife going on. I'm betting on the VA. Good luck and I hope you change your mind.....

jams95...thank you...i should keep the faith rolling....BTW...i am 45 years old ...15 years of RN in USA and 5 years in UK and still broke...my former hosp has no 401k.... my coworkers retired and came back to work at age 72... i just dont want to continue going to work using cane like my co workers on the night shift....

we always get SO MANY low census thats why i left that hospital...

my nurse friends and i thought about leaving nursing and work as a pimp in vegas :smokin:

thanks for your kind support and encouragement...:redbeathe ive always wanted to work on the VA but it is so extremely hard.... i have not heard anything from them since my interview last oct 20 with nurse managers...does that mean it is all over? i have to keep on hoping.....

do you need to be an american citizen before you can apply at VA?just wondering..thanks

No way, go in person. Were you offered a job by the interviewing Director? If so, call that Director or go down in person to see the Director........... Be persistent. If you didn't get that job, then reapply or reinterview for another unit. And there's always another VA to goto. I was offered the job during my interview, so I've been in contact with my Director who is pushing my application thru the steps, but it'll still take 5 months....... Good luck.

I believe that you either must be a citizen or naturalized. Part of the paperwork was filling out of form that asks about citizenship or proof of natrualization. But call a VA recruiter to make sure.......

I agree with the other posters. It is definately a process. I was offered a position on the spot after my interview. It took about 3 months along with the paperwork and the background check paperwork was long. It is worth it to get in the VA. Besides the military, they have the best benefits. I am now on active duty, but they do credit your active duty time toward your retirement, so that's a good thing.

Don't call, go in. Sometimes they need a face with the name to jog their memories.

The reason it takes so long is because the VA is infested by lazy and incompetent employees. I don't even know where they find these people. One time I went to HR and there were like 5 people in the office and yet when I tried to call them over the phone, nobody even dared to pick it up. I even saw one lady on the internet online shopping. I am done with the VA.

And people want more socialized medicine ? Check out the blogs of some of these head in the air nurses with no sense of reality. They want to creat a massive government entity for healthcare, I work at the VA, im also a veteran, we have some decent ancillary staff, but alot of them are very lazy. Housekeeping is lazy as hell, some of the secretarys are ok, Dietary is lazy as hell. SOme nurses are pretty good, some are not, most are pretty good though

Their is a form of discrimination that occurs at the VA in particular because I work at it that I see, and emphasis commitee based only on a certain race.

it is okey to go there and follow up on it..the nurse recruiters are nowhere to be seen ...only the secretary.

one nurse friend told me that one can tell a person is a government employee...just look at the size of their "behind" because they dont do %%%%. i am hopeful but reality sinking in with regards to my oct. 20 interview...

happy new year to all ..

I think after the first of the year you may here some good news. You seem like you have the experience they need. I am finding so many people on vacation and I believe the government starts their fiscal year in January which means there could be funding for this position.

Do not give up hope. You will find something.

I agree with ancillary/office staff. They are just too ghetto and unprofessional. One time I asked a CNA politely to take VS (which is supposed to be their jobs to begin with), and received complaints. It is common knowledge in VA that the R.N. has, in reality, no authority over the nursing assistants, and in fact is at their mercy in most regards. I also agree with the race preference. Ive seen it.

Can someone please elaborate and educate me on the emphasis committee and the race its based on. Thanks. I appreciate any replies.
