Working for the County of Los Angeles-Advice
They have a hiring freeze because of the state budget crisis. It happened last summer too (which lasted 4-5 months).

why is the VA taking so long to hire you?
I agree with ancillary/office staff. They are just too ghetto and unprofessional. One time I asked a CNA politely to take VS (which is supposed to be their jobs to begin with), and received complaints. It is common knowledge in VA that the R.N. has, in reality, no authority over the nursing assistants, and in fact is at their mercy in most regards. I also agree with the race preference. Ive seen it.

New Grad Starting at Good Samaritan Hospital- Los Angeles
$28 is too low for LA. I started at $32 excluding differentials/holidays in my hospital. this march we will have another increase.

why is the VA taking so long to hire you?
The reason it takes so long is because the VA is infested by lazy and incompetent employees. I don't even know where they find these people. One time I went to HR and there were like 5 people in the office and yet when I tried to call them over the phone, nobody even dared to pick it up. I even saw one lady on the internet online shopping. I am done with the VA.

New Grads at VA Hospital
I turned down my offer of employment. The patient nurse ratio in my VA is too high to risk my license. thanks but no thanks i said.

Any VA Hospital nurses in here?
The VA in Los Angeles has 8:1 ratio in both med surgical and telemetry. beware.

why is the VA taking so long to hire you?
i heard that if you have a lot of experience as a nurse, it takes a lot longer for the VA to hire you. the va has to verify each employer that you put in your application. sometimes they can't contact your employer (or your employer does not respond back on time) and that delays your application even more. just a heads up.

why is the VA taking so long to hire you?
The hiring process at the VA is long and complicated that is why many nurses just give up and work somewhere else. They usually ask you a lot of paper works including 3 letters of recommendation (one from your CURRENT supervisor), which could be very difficult to get especially if you don't want your current boss to find out that you're looking for a job. This is also the reason why the floors are always understaffed and nurses are face by dangerously high patient ratio. The benefits at the VA are good, but not that good. Also, if you have an ASN, you get paid less than with a BSN. Many private hospitals pay you about the same regardless of your education (so you may wanna consider that in your decision). Finally, you should definitely go for those 2 other interviews. I hope that helps.

Would I have any problems being a nurse with an associates degree?
ADN prepares you more for bedside nursing. BSN mostly management stuff.
