Could anyone give me some info on working at the Va Hospital. I will be graduating in May 2009

I was just hired as a Student RN for 22.23 an hour. I have no past medical experience. I don't know who told what but thats the truth. It does take a while for all the red tape. I will be starting in June after I graduate, I'm so excited. The benefits are great.:yeah:

Was this for the st louis VA? If so I really think someone should investigate why they were telling some people 14 and hour.

yes, it's the St. Louis VA. I don't know why they told you that. You should call, the nurse recruiter is Mary coleman. Good Luck

I will check with her. It does seem strange that they would state 14 and actually hire at more. Perhaps the person had the wrong pamphlets.

I am looking into interviewing at the Columbia VA ICu. Anyone familure with this VA?

I work at the columbia VA, I started as a student nurse tech at around $14, then when I graduated I went up to RN pay.

thanks for your reply! What area do you work? I am looking at icu. Can you tell me anything about it? Thanks!

What state was this in? I was hoping to work at the VA in Prescott AZ and hope the situation is not like this. Thanks.

If you are talking to me, Columbia MO

I hate to be negative...but...and from different posts you will here different things about VA. As a new graduate....I say do not go for VA...unless you do some real life investigation of the facility. I have not seen a 'real' preceptor ship for new nurses. I have seen alot of "eating the young"....check out a variety of facilities. You want a good, solid preceptorship for sure. Good Luck, Welcome to the nursing profession!!! :)

Where is it that you are working? Sounds like it should be everywhere...but it is not. What's your location Becky8?

Hello,

I am also a May 2009 grad who's applied to the VA in Nashville. I have talked to nurses who worked at the VA in Nashville and in Denver and they love it, and they both said new grads starrt at $19-23/hour, depending. My question is: How long is "awhile" for the application process to take? The VA in Nashville told me not to apply until close to graduation, so I'm worried that I might not get hired for months. Anyone willing to share how long they had to wait to get an interview, etc? Thanks!
