VA employee's I have a question for you

Published

How often is a security clearance required to work for the VA and how does credit issues affect you?

Specializes in med/surg, LTC.

all i can tell you is that security clearance was very tough when i got hired...it goes in very deep and on several levels and they might let you start orientation after a first level is cleared, that doesn't mean they're done with you...federal government doesn't mess around...

if there's something in that closet, it will come back and haunt you...:jester:

*not sure about credit issues*

I know that in my clearance that they sent out some pretty detailed questionaires to my references about my moral character.

In any event what they are looking for (IMO) is do you have the personal integrity to tell the truth about any skeletons in the closet. As to credit issues I think it is the question of whether you are now in default on any federal obligations. If so are you clearing the obligation and keeping your word.

If you have recent dings on your credit I would talk over the issues with the nurse recruiter. (I just looked at the application and it asks about federal debt or forfeiting collateral.)

Best of luck...

I worked at the VA and it took about 2 weeks for my clearance to come back. I was also working there on 9/11 and boy did things change that day. The one day I forgot my name tag was, you guessed it, 9/11. Just about didn't get to work. Nurse manager had to come down and ID me.

What kind of skeletons will cause someone not to get hired?
