UTMB spring 2011 applicants

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for all those who have applied to the UTMB school of nursing for the spring 2011. Feel free to post comments regarding your application and any other questions if u may have. Also, good luck to everyone who has applied!! :)

Oh, it's not so hot..at least not compared to everyone else. I used to think anything above a 3.0 was awesome...not anymore. I have a previous bachelors, so when I took most of my prereqs years ago, I was young and foolish. My prereq gpa is 3.49 and science 3.75. Won't even mention my overall....it covers 170 hours worth of foolish business and finance courses. What about you guys...share?

I've also applied at TWU, Houston -UT, and trying to do the UTA program, but they are a little disorganized. Not so sure about that program and it being so new. I can't believe they accepted 2.9 gpas for Fall. Is that overall, or prereqs. Because overall, I have over 170 hours with a prior BBA, and that GPA is not good. But as far as prereqs, I think I'll be competitive enough. I live in Houston, and am worried that UTMB might be the only school I get into and I'll have to drive to Galveston everyday. Not so sure about that, I have 3 little ones in elementary school.

Everpark, we're in the same boat! I live in Houston as well and so far I have applied to PVAMU, HCC ADN, TWU, couldnt make the deadline for UT. Anyway, I have a little one in Elementary as well and a husband so my only choice will be to drive to Galveston as well if accepted at UTMB. Although I heard other people mention that for clinicals they try to set you up with a location close to your home and if that's the case that will be great... the sacrifice of driving, then would be worth it.. Good luck to everyone!

my prereqs gpa is 3.5 and science is 3.7 :) ...mines isnt too great either! Yes, you're right Ariess...couple of my friends who go there told me that you can do your clinicals at the medical center in houston.

That really gives me peace of mind...:yeah:In case i do get accepted I wouldn't mind driving to Galveston 3 x's per wk.

Do you think it really would be only 3 times a week? If clinicals could be here? We could also carpool. For me, I would rather go to UTMB and finish in 15 months, than go to TWU which takes 24 months. I need that extra income coming in.

I volunteer at Southeast Memorial and there is a girl who is currently doing the acc BSN program. She told me that they do clinicals all around and that normally they will look at your address and try to place you at a hospital that is close. I also talked to Dora T last week and she said there is a 6-8 week minimum till the interviews start. She said they had about 300 applicants and will accept about 80 students for the traditional program. My Science gpa is only a 3.2 and my regular gpa is about a 3.5, on the Teas I only got a 79%. When I talked to Dora she said between a 75-80 is a competitive score on the TEAS. What was everyone elses scores?

my teas scores weren't that great :/ ...but wow out of 300 people that applied, only 80 will get in. That's such a small number.

Seriously, 79-80% is competitive. That's good news! Maybe I have a chance. And only 300 applicants. I'm getting more optimistic I'll get accepted to a program!

hey guys!! I just started the fall bsn program at utmb and just wanted to say good luck with your applications and interviews. Make sure you are constantly on top of what documents the office has received before the deadline! Most nursing schools are disorganized, and UTMB is definitely a little scatter brained! Also, don't be surprised if they say interviews will be in September and then they get pushed back to October. Biggest thing about the application process - be patient and be flexible! Also, just FYI, I was always told "oh you'll only be on campus 3 days a week" - this is not true. Maybe the Accelerated program is different than ours, but for first semester you are on campus for 5 days a week for the first month. After that, you will rotate every other week - 5 days a week and then 3 days a week + 2 days clinicals (whereever they are). For the clinicals, they definitely try to spread you out, but that's mainly because they can't have 80 students doing clinicals only at UTMB. I live in Sugar Land and have clinicals out here, but there is a girl in my group that drives from League City to Sugar Land. I have heard that for other semesters you aren't on campus as much. So Good Luck to all of you and if you have any questions, just send them over.

Hi Kelly,

I was wondering...did you or any of your classmates take Pathophysiology before beginning the nursing program? If so, was it helpful? I understand that it is not transferrable, but I am taking it just to help with that first semester.

Also, do many of your classmates live on the island? If so, were they guaranteed clinicals on the island? I will be moving from the Austin area and need to find the best place for me and my family while I am in school. Thanks so much for your willingness to help the hopeful newbies! :)

Cheers!

Good luck everyone. I'm applying for Fall '11 at UTMB! (Among a couple others)
