The UTMB Fall 2019 application opens soon on November 15! Have you started on your essay or the TEAS preparation yet? I am so excited and nervous at the same time and have been stalking past threads on AllNurses.
Currently taking AP I and Microbiology and will be taking AP II in the Spring. I hope to take the TEAS by the end of December.
Please feel free to discuss your experience, stats, comments, etc.
Good luck to all of us! :)
Hi guys!! So I was just pulled off the waitlist today. I’m super excited but I’m also hesitant to accept my position for a number of reasons— biggest one being that I am a single mom of a 3.5 year old. My support system is in the Austin area. I’m nervous as to how it’s going to work out with clinicals since they will be 12 hours starting at 6 am. I know this is a long shot but are there any other single moms that are in the fall 2019 cohort that would consider doing a roommate situation and rotate clinical days so we could help each other out? Even if you’re not a single mom and just love kids... I would be willing to compensate. Email me at [email protected] if you wanna chat more about it?

it's only 16 months, you can do it! the sacrifice will be well worth it, more than anything because of your kid. You already came this far which is awesome. Sadly, we hear disgusting things now in days and I wouldn't leave a kid with a roommate I just met. congrats on coming this far, it is really a big deal specially as a single mom!

Thank you!
I guess my thought process was that at least utmb students had to undergo a background check and drug screen for the admission process.. also, nursing students are presumably responsible, good people.
It might be worth giving someone at UTMB a call to see if they have any suggestions regarding your situation. I was a single mom myself before, and I'd hate to see you pass up an opportunity that could be life-changing for you and your child. I don't know if some extra info might help, and I don't know that it's the exact same for fall semester, but my friend in the summer cohort said that clinicals don't start until about 4 weeks after classes start, they are on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays and whatever day you get will not change (at least for that semester, idk about after that), and the location you are assigned will determine whether the clinical is during the day or at night. I'm not sure if it's possible for students to utilize any on site daycare the hospitals might have for employees, but it might be worth asking someone at UTMB about. Aside from that, I would start looking into childcare now, so that you have a plan in place for when school starts. Typically some areas have daycares or childcare providers that provide care for odd hours, specifically because there are first responders, healthcare professionals, plant workers, etc that are single parents with no other options for care. If there are any community fb pages for the Galveston area, you might join those as well and see if anyone can point you in the right direction for safe, reliable childcare. I hope this helps and best of luck!!!
