UTHSCSA Fall 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey guys!

Anyone else here applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Nursing Program? I am currently a student at Texas State University and will be applying for the fall semester! The application deadline is quickly approaching, I'm super nervous!!

My stats are:

Math/Science GPA: 3.3

Overall GPA: 3.7

Overall TEAS: 90.7

Let me know your stats!

lessay0214 It doesn't have to be done again, if you got all three, and have the proof. ?

We were required to have a doctor sign off on our previous immunizations (or proof of disease). I just took my papers to my health provider when all mine were ready for one sign-off.

Thank you so much for your comment!! Appreciate you being here to help us while we wait out these next couple of months ?

How are your classes going so far this semester? Have your clinicals started yet? I do have one question about the admissions process - Did you have to do an interview? If so, what kind of questions should we expect to be asked?

Classes are FULL. So much reading and stuff to do every day. But I'm happy and it will be worth it. It's not hard to understand the material, but just an adjustment to amount of material to cover. Our class was the last one not to have to do an interview. My friend just got an invite for the video one for the Fall '19 admission. Wow. Good luck if you have to do one!

From my experience here, they are definitely looking for leadership, volunteer-minded people who care about their community, a sense of advocacy and...with a conservative look. They have a dress code here. (Bye-bye blue hair. :( ) And smiles go a long way. ?

Same!!!

Good luck!

Definitely take advantage of the practice questions before you start. Be refreshed and ready when you do. Look professional when you do your interview. Light makeup, conservative hair. They want people to represent our school and who really care about the health of our community. Stress your leaderships skill, your empathy, your willingness for continued learning and something that inspired you along the way.

I never got an email... what does this mean?

So when I called UTHSCSA's school of nursing the next day after people said that they received invitation invites by email, I was told that all invites were already sent via email and if you didn't receive one, you were not selected due to either not meeting the requirements (not meeting the minimum GPAs or missing a class), late transcripts on NursingCas or TEAS scores. So I requested to speak to one of the admissions director to understand what I missed exactly that prevented me from receiving an interview invite. I spoke to Jennifer Aguilar and she informed me that I was missing Chemistry 2 and if not for that, I would of received an interview invite since I met all their GPA requirements☹️ She said that UTHSCSA requires that ALL math and science pre requsites HAVE to be completed prior to applying and I was not aware that UTHSCSA required chem 2 unfortunately. So I have no choice but to reapply for the spring once I have either taken the clep exam for chemistry or finish Chem 2 before August 1st for the spring deadline. So my advice would be to call and ask if one of the admissions director can review your application with you! With that said, good luck to everyone who received an invitation invite! Please let us know what the process is like and what we can expect once we apply for the spring! Thank you in advance!!

Hello all. I am a current nursing student at UTHSCSA, I am in my 1st semester. If y'all have any questions let me know.

Also with the Hep B you do need a titer to prove that you are immune. I did have my vaccines when I was a kid, but I was not immune and had to redo the process all over again and get another titer. Once you get your acceptance letters you can always contact the student health & wellness center if you have any questions on the instructions.

It's going along pretty great. It is a big adjustment than what I am used to, but I enjoy it. I've definitely had to change my priorities and make sacrifices to allow some time toward my schooling, but it is only 2 years and it will go by fast. I think what makes nursing school hard is staying on top of everything, there are so many assignments that you can easily lose track and forget about something. Or you have several important tasks to do simultaneously at the same. I would say try to build good study habits now and organization.

I'm glad you're enjoying your semester!! Do you think that it is possible to keep a part-time job while attending nursing school? I've heard many nursing students have to give up work in order to keep up with school.

I do not work, I am lucky enough to not have to work during nursing school. That being said, I know many people in my cohort who have to work and they are able to balance work and school. A girl in my group has twins and works part time and she is doing great in the program, but of course that takes discipline. I would recommend maybe trying to get a work study, that way you can earn money and still be able to study. Some work studies you are able to work and have some time to study while you work.

Random tip: Sleep is very important. I can not stress this enough. You will have classes early in the morning and then lab after. You want to be able to focus in class, because you will get important information and it is pure lecture based. The teacher does not write their own notes on a white board and you have to rely on yourself to take good notes (most students take notes on computer). Lectures are long and you want to stay focused, luckily they give a few breaks during lecture.

Another random tip: Start saving money NOW. There are some expenses that you will have to make in the beginning of the program and it will leave a dent in your bank. Like getting a stethoscope(try to get a decent one if you can, but not too expensive. Most of us have a littman classic 3), purchasing ATI, Shadow Health, scrubs, shoes, watch (get a watch with a second hand), your laptop must meet requirements by the school or you have to purchase a new one (we didn't have to purchase with the school, but it could change), insurance, parking pass (varies in price), seat deposit to reserve your spot.

Sorry if this post sounds is a bit of a bummer, but you can do it. If you truly want to achieve your goals you will do whatever it takes to get there and nothing will stop you.
