UTHSCSA Fall 2010 HOPEFULS!

Published

Anybody applied to the fall 2010 semester? I just received an invite to take the TEAS!

Hi AznPlayR99,

I am starting in the fall and I had a few questions for you: what should we expect our first day of class? What do you suggest us doing/purchasing to help keep organized (any suggestions would help..) I have heard HORRIBLE things about care plans; how long do they actually take? I am just nervous and really don't know what to expect...Oh how are the instructors??? I guess any advice you can give will be helpful...thanks:uhoh3:

I got my letter on Saturday.. and I'M IN!!! So happy and so excited. Finally the wait is over for all of us and we can start on the next chapter in our life! Can't wait to meet everyone!:yeah:

Ouch, already stressing out and yet the semester is so far away? hehe j/k

First day of class is pretty easy. Like most college classes they talk about the syllabus and then let you know how the semester will go... and then maybe go into lecture?! (sorry i don't know how the curriculum is or if they are going to be changing it)

I'm a horrible person to ask about keeping organized... LOL i just keep things in separate folders each semester and I hope to remember important dates. MOST people though have planners and write in them constantly. You'll also learn that you don't need to buy EVERY book just the essential ones.

Careplans aren't that bad at all. Don't get me wrong they do take some time, but you can usually get it done in a couple of hours (worth of real effort) or like me 2-3 of laziness. Once you write your first one and get the hang of it it's not bad. The only thing that annoys me is that each semester you get a new instructor and they all grade DIFFERENTLY so what you did perfect last semester is only sub-par to the next one.

All instructors are different, you'll learn that quickly when talking to other students. That's just how it goes. But in all honesty if you want to get the most out of clinicals... you're going to have to be the one that seeks out opportunities. You can't just sit around thinking oh maybe today im going to give a shot, start an IV, do a foley b/c nurses don't get you for that. For the most part you just have to listen around the unit and then ask if you can do it, but you're really limited to what you can do in your first two semesters.

Sorry, I might be forgetting things I thought in my mind to type, but hopefully this helps... just keep coming up with questions and I'll try my best!

ew1116-congrats on the acceptance!!!:yeah:

AznPlayR99-

Do you have any book recommendations that will be useful to read during the summer before classes start? Oh, do you know the color of the scrubs that we have to wear?

If only we were able to identify each other on our first day of orientation, oh well I hope to at least meet one of you during this period. Fingers cross.

as stated in the terms of service:

while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
  3. please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

the best to all of you! thank you for your cooperation.

Books? Haha, I bought myself an NCLEX book before first semester even started thinking i would study and it's still collecting dust... In all honesty if you understand anatomy & physiology nursing school will be a breeze....

All the classes always cover the general stuff of diabetes, and the big organ systems of respiratory, liver, kidney, heart.... you can't really go wrong with those..

Scrubs are bought officially from school they sell the orange top you must buy... Scrub bottoms are black but you can buy any black bottom scrubs you want (I just feel like i need more pockets haha)

I'm off to relax for a bit unless you have more questions :-p

I can help too! I graduated in December, if anyone has questions to ask. Let me know! I'm looking for a job now, and so I have a lot of time on my hands which is soo different than being in nursing school! hahaha

seriously guys, i'm open for any questions!

boo, we're gonna dress in halloween colors. :grn:LOL. Anyways, thanks for the info and advice. Can't wait to start already.

well if it's any consolation, it's BURNT orange and black pants. hahaha. Would you rather wear that or alll white?! Believe me, "halloween colors" are so much better than having to wear cream colored underwear under your white uniform!

Nah, I love burnt orange. (former texas longhorn for 1 1/2). It's justs funny that's all. But yeah, i know many of my friends had to wear white scrubs for their nursing programs.

Thanks guys for the advice. If there is anything else that you can think of that will help us out, I am sure we are all up for suggestions!!!:lol2:
