UTHSC Traditional BSN Spring 2014 Applicants

Published

I have seen many threads for previous applicants for past semesters to the UT Houston School of Nursing. I wanted to start one myself as I am applying for the spring 2014 traditional BSN and have yet to find a thread for it. Although I opened it for applicants, I would also encourage previous applicants, current/previous students, and applicants for other semesters at UTHSC to join in and share in this exciting time!

Hiya! I'm applying for the Fall 2014 cycle and attended the info session. These guys pretty much covered it in the last few posts. Thanks guys, it is nice to review the info.

I asked the admissions lady after the session if they considered anything else other than Hesi scores and your GPA (For example, if you previously volunteered/worked in a clinical setting etc.)

Her answer was a straight up no. Just a heads up. Volunteer in order to get yourself more familiar with the setting but don't count on them really considering it.

Do you know if they consider the science GPA more than overall prerequisites?

Do you know if they consider the science GPA more than overall prerequisites?

This question wasn't asked & they didn't mention anything about it, but I would assume that they would pay a bit more attention to your science GPA since nursing is so dependent on science. She did mention A&P a few times throughout the session, so I'd imagine that's going to be a grade that they really focus on.

I don't know if this questions was already answered on this forum, but how many people did they say they will accept in Spring 2014?

FeFe, Karnie and Arobbins thanks so much! You guys have been a fountain of information =] Super helpful so thanks again, it's much appreciated!!

I'm still waiting on my last transcript to disappear off my to-do list!! The wait is truly agonizing lol

Are you officially finished with prereqs? Congrats!! I'll be finished this Fall & I can't wait for a bit of a break :)

@flowers23 they wouldn't tell us how many they would be accepting but they would tell us how many they accepted last semester (128 people).

I am just curious. Say roughly 700 people apply, I wonder what percentage meet the absolute bare minimum requirements.

I just sent in all my transcripts today, and am waiting on a few more to be sent from schools. I'm taking the Hesi in the next week or so. I should do well, but who knows. I'm super nervous, but looking at this last minute application as a trial run for the Summer.

They accepted 128 for the summer or fall semester?:)

Hello,

I am not applying for a 2014 admission but my apply for the 2015 admission to UTHSC-Houston. I was wondering if you know that overall GPA is a relevant factor for admissions into traditional BSN program? I looked over the past posts here from previous classes and I read some people saying yes it is a factor and others that say no it is not a factor. The reason I ask is because some of these individuals who had less than stellar overall GPA's had great HESI scores and very high science GPA (4.0) and high pre-req GPA (3.8 and above) who did not get in. I know there may be other factors that the admissions people look at, such as how many times you re-took your science classes, etc. I would also like to know if any of you have heard that apply for Texas Academic Fresh Start would improve your chances for admissions. I have a B.S. all ready - I graduated in 1988, 25 years ago. I have also taken courses @ Lonestar in another A.A.S degree and my GPA was much better (graduated in 2003). Since that time, I have taken the classes I needed for the pre-reqs that I did not all ready have with my prior degrees (and for some of you thinking how could it be possible that I would need more - well it is!). I have a 3.91 GPA in my pre-reqs and a 4.0 science GPA. Academic Fresh Start is a program for all Texas residents applying to public schools where you can have your old GPA and courses (erased) from your record. The fact that you have a degree doesn't change, but your grades prior to 10 years of your application for the Fresh Start program no longer can be used in your admission process. Trouble is, I don't know if that counts for a second bachelor's degree or if it only counts for graduate admissions. The bad part is you have to re-take all classes needed for pre-requisites even if you had A's in those particular classes. You can't pick and chose which classes you want to keep and which you want to "re-do". If you google Texas Academic Fresh Start, you can read all about it if you are interested.

I'm really at a cross-roads here, even if the admissions people say that overall GPA doesn't matter, I wonder why not? I wonder if they really do matter in some cases. If anyone has input regarding this, I'd love to know!

BTW, I have taken all my prereqs except for 4 classes I would need to redo under Fresh Start. I haven't taken my HESI yet as I don't know exactly when I will apply to nursing schools but probably will in 2015.

Thanks!

They accepted 128 for the summer or fall semester?:)

Fall :)

Yikes! That's not as many as they have been recently!!!:(

I'm not quite done yet!! This fall is also my last semester of prereqs =] I'm finishing my last summer class this week and happy about the two week break before fall!! I intend on doing absolutely nothing other than sitting next to a pool lol I read on your blog that you moved to Houston last year? My husband and I moved here last July so we are both kind of newbies =]

I'm in a similar boat as you! I graduated from high school in 1992 and originally pursued a degree in Occupational Safety and Health...worked in the field for a few years and decided it wasn't for me...without finishing the degree. Some of the grades for some of those classes were less than desirable which of course, brings down my complete overall GPA. I eventually received a degree in Medical Imaging (x-ray) in 2007 from San Jac and have been working in the medical field since. When I decided to pursue x-ray, I was undecided between x-ray and nursing. I was too chicken (lol) to go for the nursing...and this is what I really wanted to do (life lesson learned...go with your gut instinct lol)! As I have worked in x-ray, often closely with nurses and doctors, I have discovered that I can absolutely become a nurse and this has been reinforced by many of these wonderful, inspiring people! Needless to say, I have MANY, many credits that are not needed for nursing. From my understanding, they extract the grades from the prerequisites needed and calculate an overall GPA. Then they calculate a GPA from the science prerequisites. A classmate of mine that is already an LVN received her Transcript Evaluation. On the first one she received, it seemed like they randomly picked classes for her electives and those of which they picked had lower grades (a B) than other electives that had higher grades. She called and had them look at it again and they adjusted it. After they adjusted it, her overall GPA increased by 0.2 points (3.2 to a 3.4). I would definitely watch for little things like that. I, on the other hand, have not received a transcript eval and I'm getting really concerned. I submitted my transcripts the same day as her and we took the HESI the same day...at the same time. Sort of frustrating. I wish we could check the progress of the evals online.

Sorry about the rambling...I tend to do that lol!
