Hello, I am not applying for a 2014 admission but my apply for the 2015 admission to UTHSC-Houston. I was wondering if you know that overall GPA is a relevant factor for admissions into traditional BSN program? I looked over the past posts here from previous classes and I read some people saying yes it is a factor and others that say no it is not a factor. The reason I ask is because some of these individuals who had less than stellar overall GPA's had great HESI scores and very high science GPA (4.0) and high pre-req GPA (3.8 and above) who did not get in. I know there may be other factors that the admissions people look at, such as how many times you re-took your science classes, etc. I would also like to know if any of you have heard that apply for Texas Academic Fresh Start would improve your chances for admissions. I have a B.S. all ready - I graduated in 1988, 25 years ago. I have also taken courses @ Lonestar in another A.A.S degree and my GPA was much better (graduated in 2003). Since that time, I have taken the classes I needed for the pre-reqs that I did not all ready have with my prior degrees (and for some of you thinking how could it be possible that I would need more - well it is!). I have a 3.91 GPA in my pre-reqs and a 4.0 science GPA. Academic Fresh Start is a program for all Texas residents applying to public schools where you can have your old GPA and courses (erased) from your record. The fact that you have a degree doesn't change, but your grades prior to 10 years of your application for the Fresh Start program no longer can be used in your admission process. Trouble is, I don't know if that counts for a second bachelor's degree or if it only counts for graduate admissions. The bad part is you have to re-take all classes needed for pre-requisites even if you had A's in those particular classes. You can't pick and chose which classes you want to keep and which you want to "re-do". If you google Texas Academic Fresh Start, you can read all about it if you are interested. I'm really at a cross-roads here, even if the admissions people say that overall GPA doesn't matter, I wonder why not? I wonder if they really do matter in some cases. If anyone has input regarding this, I'd love to know! BTW, I have taken all my prereqs except for 4 classes I would need to redo under Fresh Start. I haven't taken my HESI yet as I don't know exactly when I will apply to nursing schools but probably will in 2015. Thanks!
