UTHSC Summer 2017

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone, I just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON students who are applying for Summer 2017. I didn't see a thread created for this term yet. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin this long journey. Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!

Overall GPA 3.1

Science GPA 3.3

Pre-Requisite GPA 3.85

HESI

Math 92

Read Comprehension 96

Vocabulary 96

Grammar 92

Anatomy 84

Critical Thinking 920

I'm having a hard time scheduling the TEAS because I work full-time, and it seems to only be offered Mon-Thurs mostly.

Your HESI grades are awesome! Did you have to repeat it?

I am very weak in math, and unfortunately failed that portion.

These are my grades for each section:

Math 54

Anatomy 92

Reading comprehension 90

Grammar 78

Vocabulary 88

Critical Thinking 900

I plan on retaking it soon probably in September sometime.

I felt strong about my knowledge of everything but math prior to taking the test.

Any recommendations on the study guide, study habits? I have the Elsevier study guide currently.

My overall GPA is 3.56

Pre-requisite GPA is 3.66

Science GPA is 3.5

Thanks for any recommendations!

Hi guys,

I am a current student at UT, I also started in the Summer. So if anyone has questions please ask me. Good luck!!

Hello!

If you don't mind me asking, what were your HESI scores and GPA like upon applying?

Did you get wait-listed, or accepted immediately?

What other schools did you apply to?

I don't think I've wanted anything more than to get into nursing school.

I've worked really hard over these 3 years to take my pre-reqs while working full-time.

Thank you,

Andrea.

Hi everyone! I was planning to apply for the Spring term, but unfortunately my philosophy class was not accepted. I am now preparing to apply for the summer of 2017! I am also applying to Sam Houston, TWU, and UTMB. I am hoping I at least get into one of these schools. I have not taken the HESSI yet, but I have started to studying.

HESSI question: For the people that have already taken the HESSI, did you just use the ELSEVIER purple book? I am super nervous about it and I want to do the best that I can. I started looking into online practice test.

I used the purple book to study. It covers everything pretty good. I would suggest studying your own AP notes for that section.

How did you find that they did not accept your philosophy class? Can you take the correct one in the fall semester? You can apply for Spring with the pending class being taken in the fall.

The deadline for Spring is September 1 now.

@jennmv - Thanks for the tips! I found out about my philosophy class by comparing my transcript to the nursing requirements that UT has on their website. I didn't see the philosophy course I took on there, so I emailed the nursing department and they confirmed that my philosophy class was not accepted. I also had the same issue with a sociology class that I signed up for to take in the fall, but when I emailed to confirm that as well they told me that it was accepted.

I suggest to everyone, if you are in doubt about a certain course just email! They reply in a timely matter and are super nice about answering questions.

The reason why I wanted to apply for the summer term was because I didn't think I had enough credits to apply! I reviewed everything yesterday and I submitted my application for the spring term last night! All I need to do is take the entrance exam. I am so happy that they extended their deadline, because I am taking chemistry right now and wont be done until the 15th. However, if I don't get accepted into their spring term, then I will reapply to the summer term.

When you applied, did it ask you to input your HESI scores or just to submit the transcript separately?

If you don't mind me asking, what email address are you sending the questions to?

I have a few questions of my own, and it's always good to have a point of contact.

As far as the study guide, I also used the Elsevier purple book. My A&P, reading, grammar, etc were great. My math was failing, but so far from asking around everyone has said the book is pretty straight forward with the math. So, I plan on reviewing that section multiple times. Retaking the HESI next month.

Good luck on your application!

@AndreaD2016 - I filled out the application, paid, submitted, and left the HESI portion alone. I almost freaked out because when I tried to log back in, I couldn't! However, this morning I received an email with my username and new password for the login to the UT application. Basically it's a new website where you can update your HESI scores and it also shows your "to do list". I haven't sent my transcripts yet, but I am today. You send that separately to an email provided on the UT Website. I found it last night on the website, but I couldn't find it today so I just emailed them directly asking on how to transfer transcripts.

I email Mrs. Hundemer at - [email protected]

So far she has been super nice and easy to talk to (over email). I just sent an email asking clarification about the transcripts, so I'll let you know what she says.

Thanks for the tips for the HESI!

@Nurse2bkd00 Do you know if we have to wait until the Spring deadline has passed to apply for Summer?

On the website I've only seen the application deadlines, not necessarily the opening dates.

It's great to have the perspective of someone who's in the middle of the application process.

Thanks for all the details!

@AndreaD2016 - I just received a reply from Katherine:

Sending Academic Transcripts to UTHealth

All applicants to UTHealth must submit one complete official transcript from each institution of higher (i.e., post-secondary) education attended. Applicants to UT medical schools or dentistry (DDS) programs are required to submit transcripts to the campus where they are admitted in addition to the transcript which is submitted to the Texas Medical & Dental School Application Service in Austin. Transcripts with print dates over 6 months will not be accepted as "official".

The transcript should show a record of all academic work completed and must be submitted by the college or university directly to the Office of the Registrar at the following address:

UTHealth

Office of the Registrar

PO Box 20036

Houston, TX 77225

Transcripts may NOT be faxed, but UTHealth partners with a number of other institutions who transmit transcripts to us electronically. A complete list of the institutions that currently send transcripts electronically to UTHealth is maintained by our office. Transcripts sent electronically by electronic data interchange (EDI) are typically received within 48 hrs of the time they are ordered.

Transcripts from colleges and universities attended outside the United States are also required. A request form is available to assist with these requests. For help with questions regarding transcripts from international institutions, please contact the Registrar's Office at 713-500-3361.

I hope this helps!!

I am also not sure if the application for summer 2017 is "opened" yet, but if I remember correctly - When I started the application it asked which term I was applying and there was an option for spring and summer of 2017. However, don't count on my word 100% because I have started to fill out multiple applications for other nursing programs.

I also feel happy and more at ease kind of helping each other out! It makes my anxiety calm down lol!

@Nurse2bkd00 - Yes this is a great avenue for us to interact, bounce questions off each other, and have a buddy during this process.

Even though I have the support of my family, and fiance - it's nice to have the ability to interact with students who are in the same stage of their journey as me.

@AndreaD2016 - I totally agree! I have family and my husband, but it's not the same as talking and sometimes even venting to someone who is actually going through the process with you. My family and friends don't totally get the stress.

Hi Andrea,

Sorry I have been very busy with night clinicals.

Answering your questions:

1. My overall HESI was 88, Science GPA 4.0 and overall GPA 3.5

2. I was wait-listed for Spring 2015, but I got immediate acceptance for Summer 2015

3. I applied to PVAMU, TWU--> got accepted to both

I knew exactly how you feel. I also worked full time while doing my pre-req! nursing school has its own game, but don't ever give up!!
