I know it's early, but I wanted to start a thread for those of us planning to apply to UTHSC for the Summer 2015 session. I am hoping to go the Pacesetter route. I currently have a degree in Communications and I'm finally able to change careers and follow my dream. I'm a high-school teacher that will be resigning in June when the school year ends. I have a lot of prereqs already taken, but have a few to go, as well. I'm currently taking Intro to Pscyh online, will take Lifespan in May, and Intro to Soci and and A&P I & II over the summer.
If you are applying to start in this summer session too, please join in the discussion! We'll need to lean on each other as we go through this tough (but wonderful) process!
Anyone else out there?
Good Luck in advance!
I *might* be applying to the Summer 2015 program. I'm not 100% sure. I'm also applying to the UT AE MSN, so I'm still trying to decide if I'll be applying to the UTHSC Program... I have a bachelor's in psych and am already in Austin, so hoping to get into the MSN.. but I'm from Houston, so I wouldn't hate being there either :) Good luck to everyone!
Hello Everyone!
I will also be applying for Summer 2015..I'm so excited and nervous about applying.
I have a a BA in biology so thankfully have most of my pre reqs completed. I only have Nutrition which i'm currently taking online and plan to take govt and psych in fall and govt2 in the spring 2015. I will be taking my HESI A2 in early September and just started studying.
How is everyone studying for the HESI?
Since I have a full time job I can only study a couple hours during the week and on the weekends..
Is anyone going to the August 5th Information Session??
Hello everyone! I am also applying to UTHSC Summer 2015, and am also taking a shot at the Spring 2015 cohort. I am nervous, anxious, and excited about this process. I really want to attend UTHSC, its my #1 pick as far as schools. I will also be attending the Aug. 5 session so hope to some of you guys there! It also good to read the insight from the current nursing students, thank you for your words of encouragement and advice. Look forward to interacting and sharing in this journey together :)
I am planning on going to the August 5 session unless I have a work conflict. I scheduled my HESI for late November I can relate to challenge of working and studying. It is crazy and I have AP 2 this fall also.
Hey TX2015, Did you get an email from UT about the info session being full to capacity and being put on a wait list? I received one today and was wondering if anyone else that signed up received one.
I went to the information session last week. It was completely full so the wait list was legitimate. They handed out some materials but these were all available on the website. To be honest - I really didn't learn much. Almost everything that they talked about was already on the website.
A few nuggets that might be useful:
They don't look at any information until after the final submission deadline (I thought they might evaluate submissions early if they were complete - no such luck).
Minimum HESI score 75% - they did not want to answer about an average HESI score since it changes with each semester of applicants but finally guessed an average score of 86%
120 students accepted per semester
Official notification for summer is April 15 via mail (but I see from previous threads that most hear before then).
Every class is the Pacesetter program- last 16 weeks will include nights and weekend work
Some tuition increase for next year - but not major.
My biggest learning - there are only two ladies working in the admissions area. No surprise that the response time seems to be quite slow. They will not do an pre-admission counseling or transcript reviews.
I was a bit disappointed - there was no tour of the facility at all.
Hope this is helpful. I'm glad that I went if nothing else just to be impressed with the facilities around the school
Hey everyone!
I am also applying for the Summer of 2015. I am so nervous about getting in! I took my HESI exam last week. It wasn't too bad but I had a little trouble on the A&P section since I have not taken A&P2 yet, and it seemed to be mostly questions regarding A&P2. I did well on all the other sections though. I will be retaking the exam in October to see if I can raise my score in A&P. I will have had 2 months of A&P2 by that time so hopefully that will help. I used the study guide listed on their website and found it very helpful for all of the sections except for A&P. Definitely look over the math in the study guide, its my worst subject yet I scored a 100 on the math section because the study guide for the math portion was exactly like the test. Do any of y'all know if it looks bad to do the HESI twice? Im nervous about that. I have a 3.9 GPA and a 4.0 science GPA, but am very nervous about how taking the HESI twice will look on my application. I'm so glad I found this board and look forward to keeping in contact with y'all!
Hello Everyone! I just took my HESI A2 today and I made the following:
Reading Comprehension 86%
Grammar 86%
Vocab and General Knowledge 92%
A & P 96%
Math 86%
Learning Style Kinesthetic/Analytical
Personality Style Creative/People
Critical Thinking 900
I studied for about 4 weeks, 1 hr a day with the Elsevier 3rd edition book and Fundamentals of Success QA Applying Critical Thinking for Test Taking.
I' not sure if these scores are good enough. My gpa is 3.6-3.9 with a prior Bachelors degree in Bio.

Yes. That should be the correct version of the HESI entrance exam. When you take the exam, they list all of the sections and you have to pick the ones that are required for UTHSC. I'm currently a J1 (this is my first semester). I got in on my second try. When I didn't get in the first time, I started searching for other schools because, frankly, I didn't think I would get accepted. With that said, I wish that I had taken all of the sections of the HESI because other schools may require more sections than UTHSC requires. MOST, if not all, schools will not allow you to take just the section that you need to apply. So, if you can, take all of the sections.
I have also seen on previous posts that some are wanting to go the Pacesetter route when they get into the program. UTHSC has changed their program to where everyone goes the Pacesetter route. After years of trying it out, they have discovered that grads are more prepared and do better on the NCLEX after going that route. So, now, this is how their BSN program is designed.
I have pleasantly discovered that upperclassmen are more than willing to help out us newbies! So, if any of you have any questions, please, don't hesitate to ask! Definitely listen to what the other current students have said about not stressing now! Trust me, you will do PLENTY of stressing once you're in lol! Enjoy this time that you have because, once you're in, you will not have a life...well, you will but you will have a Nursing Student's life!
Honestly, even though it is all very stressful, I find it invigorating to know that I am going down the path that I have dreamed about!
Good luck to all of you!
