UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013

Hi,

I am new to allnurses.com and I wanted to start a topic for the Spring 2013 applicants at UTHSC Houston. Where we can keep each other posted on the process as it nears. I have yet to take the HESI but i wonder if anyone else has taken it and what their score was. I will compile my GPA's later and post them on here.

I am so confused and nervous! How can 2.5 GPA's get in yet I read the stories of 4.0's not getting in with 95 on HESI!!! Here is my story.... I have my degree from UH (94). I was young and did not care and just wanted to get out. Made horrible grades, had a lot of drops and even F's. Managed to graduate with a 2.5. Well, life happened and I did a complete turn around and knew I wanted to go into nursing. I needed 31 hours of pre-reqs....all my sciences and maths, history and a psych. Over the last 3 semesters I completed all the hours with a 4.0....while working 40 hours a week and raising 3 kids. Took HESI last week and made a 93%....92 in A and P and 850 in critical thinking. All other sections were pretty high...94 and 96's....but reading of all things got me. Made a 90. Couldn't believe it....I thought I would do best in that so I am not sure what happened! Will they even look at me with my GPA from first time around? I am so hoping they look at what I have done the past year and see how committed I am to this the second time around!

Hi! I just got on this site today....I wish I had found it sooner....especially before the HESI...lots of great info on study sites. Do you know if UT posts prior stats on who they accept? I have no idea if I will even be considered. I have a degree (BS in Psych from UH (92)....I did not care (TWENTY years ago!!!) and managed to barely graduate with a 2.5. Turned my life around....went to school the past 3 semesters and completed 31 hours of pre reqs with a 4.0. That included all sciences and maths. Took HESI last week:

96% Grammar

94% Vocab

94% Math

90% Reading (not sure how that happened!!!)

92% A and P

93% Overall

850 Critical Thinking

So even though I have a 4.0 for the past 31 hours....when you take some of my C's in classes like history etc I took in 88-92, it brings my pre req GPA down to like a 3.5. But all science is a 4.0.

Think I even have a chance?????

Marylynn, I'm in the same position. I had test anxiety problems and made a 2.6 in my previous computer engineering degree. I completed all my prereqs and made a 3.7 gpa. My overall on the hesi was a 92% but only a 770 on the critical thinking. :( don't worry we have all worked so hard, and like everything else this is another challenge.

Jayn, I know everyone has worked so hard and this waiting is going to be so hard..... What is considered competitive for the CT section? Do you know?

Irelevant but, I think we are the only applying class on allnurses that the majority of us have our pic uploaded! (others were blank or had abstract images) Nice to put the face with those we are talking to!! :)

I think you have a great chance!! :) You have a previous degree which shows you completed 4 years towards a specific curriculum goal...good enough for them! Honestly with the way the accept all over the ranges of scores I dont even think your past history of grades will matter. Time will show them the dedication you've enlisted towards becoming a nurse. You have very competitive stats!! You did great on Hesi, you have a degree, and your GPA's are HIGH. Stay positive girly, I think you have a better shot than you think. :)

At the info session, the only 3 things they look at are science GPA, Pre-requisite GPA, and HESI scores. They don't look at your overall GPA or the fact that you have a previous degree or what you did 20 years ago...or so they tell you. I think you have great scores. A 90 as your lowest section should definitely NOT be a problem, especially if it's reading. They care more about A&P and CT. They told us competitive scores are considered 84% and above on each section. Good luck!
