UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

If i were you I would go to UT. I forget who does it, but each year they put out a list of the best nursing schools in the country and UTHSC @ Houston is ranked 21st in the country and #1 in Texas. I am not sure if TWU made the list but I know that there were atleast several texas school a head of it. Needless to say UTHSC is the best and plus its located right in the medical center. Thats the one I would go with if I were you. You could also compare costs and the length of time each one takes, as well as the distance from your house and dont forget about parking. I will be taking the Woodlands express which drops off right in front of the school so parking is not an issue for me. HOpe this helps!

Well my holds changed, so I believe so!

@amby TWU is in the Texas Medical Center as well. Actually across the street from TCH. Also, they have a 98% NCLEX first time pass rate for their 90 person student body, while UT has a 97% for their 80. Got that info from the board of nursing website. So, both schools are exceptional; you can't undermine TWU.

It's a "women's" university, so it tends to get a little less attention in national rankings, but that doesn't change the facts on the BON website. ;)

Edit one more thing: Parking issues are practically the same since they're right down the road from one another. I calculated the tuition the other day, and they are only a couple hundred bucks off from each other, UT being slightly more.

@TaylorxTeddy, Congrats. @Amby0741, I remember seeing the list and I believe TWU was ranked 64th.

Ranking of schools is completely worthless....here, I have a degree from one of the Top 5 universities in Texas and one of the Top 100 in the nation, yet (it seems) some people choose not to take that into consideration. So I would say, don't take the rank of the UTHSC nursing program into consideration. Either way, in the end you will be an RN.

I noticed alot of people are saying that they have been granted "provisional admission." Mine says iv been admitted for the program for the term show above. Why does mine say something different?

@darcy: Besides being a longhorn fan since birth, one thing that drove my decision over other places like PV A&M is the amount of time it will take to graduate. UTHSC you will be done in 4 semester straight through the summer or 1 year and approx 5 months. PV A&M 5 semsters, summers off, 2 1/2 years :(, I believe TWU is a 2 year program as well. Going to UT you will be done and working about 6 mo to a year faster. This is what is most important to me.

@amby: because we are still taking pre reqs and it is provisional on us passing our final classes.

@ftrnrs2011 yeah i agree that ranking is not all that it is about but when it comes to nursing you have to be able to rely on your school to prepare you for the test which is what will decide whether or not you get to be a nurse. the rankings are based on the pass rate and how prepared the students were for the nursing exam. so in regards to how if will look on a resume, thats not important but i think the ranking is something to consider if you want to make sure you are prepared for the nursing exam.

They're still updating UT link... don't lose hope! My holds changed within the last hour. Last name starts with S. Stats- Bachelor's Degree GPA: 3.91 Nursing Prereq's GPA: 4.0 Hesi Composite: 97.6 CT: 820

@jofoste2 Oh duh!:clown: You would have thought I could have figured that one out on my own. I have my moments!

Does it feel like a whole bunch of letters have been skipped? I think it was an L last name and now several S names. What happened to all those in between? Anyone on here have a name starting with M-R? Just wondering.

I'm happy for all the successes on here so far.. but I'm sad :(
