This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)
I'm applying with the following stats:
Pre-req GPA: 3.21
Science GPA: 3.66
Overall GPA: 2.81
I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)
Good luck to everyone!!
Hey everyone...this is my first post to this thread....A little insight from my experience...
I got accepted last spring but couldn't start because of a technicality with my BIOL credit hours. I took some classes out of state and the hours didn't add up. Much to my dismay, I had to take a class that I had already taken to be eligible for the program this spring.
Last year I didn't get an acceptance until Nov. 4. But this was when they were doing interviews so I don't know if they had more material to go through for acceptance. I was told by some folks in the SON that they really look at the science and nursing pre-reqs. I have a business degree and had a D on the transcript with come C's from some calculus classes(back when I wasn't as studious) and the interviewer said they don't care about that. They really care about the pertinent classes to the program. I don't really know where the HESI comes into play.
My stats are:
Science:3.8
Nursing pre-req:3.3
HESI: 87%
Critical Thinking: 850
My nursing pre-req last year was 3.2 and all of the other stats were the same. I know my grade aren't the best but I managed to get accepted. I wonder how big of an impact the interviews had on admissions in the past? I'm hoping since my scores are a little higher that statistically speaking, I will get in again......fingers crossed!!!!!
Does anyone know if they have quotas for admission at this school? I heard someone mention it earlier.
Just going to address the quota topic since it keeps popping up.
I can only give you my opinion, but, since I'm a graduate of UTLaw, a school that has been the source of a some important court cases regarding affirmative action, it is an educated opinion.
The school can't have hard diversity quotas. It is strictly illegal to have a requirement of 10% little green men and have different cut-offs for HESEI scores and grades based on whether you are green or purple. There are no diversity quotas.
The school, in comparing two similar individual applications, can consider race along with other considerations such as whether you speak Spanish or Norwegian, work experience, and if you play the trombone. The courts have said that it is a legitimate concern that the student population generally mirror the general population for a variety of reasons.
In other words, if you are spending your time pondering rejection because of your race, you are missing an opportunity to spend that time actually improving yourself and your chances of success in the application process. In other words, put that energy to good use; don't aim for "similar" but exceptional"!
Back to the books for me - at least when I'm not hitting refresh on my UTLINK (just kidding, sort of).
I have never heard of diversity quotas prior to this thread. I didn't think it was ever a part of the admissions process. I just want an even chance as everyone else to get into the program because I have sweet scores that I really worked hard to maintain. BTW I did play the trombone and that was never an option I could put down on the application, just kidding . Anywho, let me get back to refreshing utlink.
Thank you, GoldenBeginnings. I have heard from a lot of people that they accept a certain percentage of males because "they have to", so that was more what I was asking about, although I have heard rumors about race and diversity quotas as well. Your response makes me feel better! If they had certain spots reserved for certain people, that would make each one of us, regardless of race/gender, apart of a much smaller acceptance pool.
Although, I'm not 100% sure that they can't have those quotas "off the books", because I do know that diversifying your school keeps you out of lawsuits of inequality (which I think is probably a good idea).
I have to ask, though, how race can be considered in a pool with spoken language, musical ability, and work experience. Knowing a language other than the one they expect you to know (English), and the others would be considered talents or skills, would they not? While race is not a skill or a talent, but simply a product of where you're born or who your ancestors were.
I feel much better about that issue though, so thank you. :)

@encephalon7 all of your other scores are so good that I don't see it negatively impacting you that much. Although, I don't know what score they take the most seriously. I think you will be fine! All of your other scores and gpa are great!
