UTHSC (Houston) Spring

U.S.A. Texas

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

Hi everyone! I'm also applying to ut houston and PV a&m.. and thinking of applying to maybe utmb.. anyone know the deadline for utmb?? anyways I just took my hesi few days ago and didnt do so good on A&P section.. I have to say it was kinda detailed... I thought it would have been just general questions but no.... anyone have any tips to do great on A&P?? and btw do you think I can get my hesi scores if I take my hesi aroud last week of august is that cutting it too close to the deadline??... o btw I have 3.9 something gpa for science and about 3.4 for just prereqs.. but I don't have any extra cirricular activity and have tiny bit of community service hours.. do you guys know anyone who got in with similar status as mine??

Im glad I found this thread!

Thanks.

The application deadline for UTMB Spring '12 has passed - you missed it by just a week if you were hoping to apply for the spring start. Fall '12 deadline is January 15, 2012, and applications will be accepted starting November 15.

I'm surprised your A&P questions were so detailed! I took the HESI (Dec '10) with 3/4 of A&P I done and before taking A&P II, but somehow managed to miss only 3 questions and ended up with an 88 on that section. To me, the questions were pretty basic, but I guess they've changed since then! Have you taken A&P I & II already? Because besides that and looking over old notes, I don't think any other guides would be useful.

From what I can remember, test scores get sent immediately, so as long as UT receives your scores a little before or on the deadline, you're fine. If I were you, I'd call the testing service and confirm that with them, though.

I think your stats are excellent. I just got in for the fall '11 program, and it was the first time they accepted applicants without an interview; they just based acceptances on stats (GPA/HESI scores) only. I think it's a model they're trying to adopt and use in the future, and if that's the case, then community service hours and extracurricular activities won't matter because none of that is asked on the application form. I'm pretty sure there are a ton of people who got in with stats similar to yours...if you want to get a sample of the stats of people accepted for the fall '11 program, check out the thread for fall '11 ut applicants; I think it's called "Fall 2011 UT Houston Health Sciences Hopefuls." Most of us put our stats/acceptance statuses on there, so you can get an idea of what UT's looking for from that.

Good luck, and feel free to ask me any other questions you have.

@prenursing9892 Do you know of anyone that got in with an overall GPA of 3.0 or under 3.0? I have a science GPA of 3.66, pre-req GPA of 3.326, but my overall GPA is only 2.855 due to having to leave school in the middle of the semester 20yrs ago. I was hoping to explain that in the interview, but that's out now. Honestly, what are my chances?

It's hard to say. I'm not sure what they're looking for now, but I don't think that your overall GPA is a big factor in the admissions decision, especially since your GPA is a result of something that happened so long ago! Your science GPA/pre-req GPA are great! Have you taken the hesi yet? Because that is also something that they heavily taken into consideration, so try to do really well on that - try to get at least a 90+ overall score, and a 800+ on the critical thinking section. Besides that, If I were you, (just to be on the safe side) I would try to raise my pre-req GPA to at least a 3.5ish or more. Are there any classes you could re-take in order to do that? Because once you have those things in place, I think you'll be good to go!

@prenurisng

Hi, I enjoyed reading your posts, I'm also trying to get into UT Summer 2012, only started working on pre-reqs while they evaluate my transcripts and tell me what else I need to take. Another school that looked at my transcripts said that my overall GPA is 3.7, science is 4.0, so really need to make sure that my pre-reqs GPA is up to par too. How is the HESI? Is it something I can take before A&P I & II, or wait to work on those before taking it. You can PM if you like just trying to get myself together before app. deadline, so need loads of info.

Thanks

Ha, thanks, stash11! You have great stats! In my opinion, the HESI is pretty easy; it's definitely not something you should stress over. There are sections on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, math, and critical thinking besides the a&p section; nothing asked in any of those sections is extremely complicated. If you have basic proficiency in reading/grammar/math you should do very well on them. Vocab is somewhat tricky, but, again, is not too bad. The critical thinking section isn't anything you can prepare for and is a little difficult, but just do the best you can on it. The questions in that section are like NCLEX/HESI exit exam questions where you have to pick the best answer out of 4 or 5 right/good answers. Like I said before, just do the best you can on it! And unless you've taken biology classes that have covered anatomy/physiology, I think you shouldn't take the HESI until after you've taken (at least) A&P I...then again, that all depends on when you'll be done with A&P II and when the application deadline is. Well, hopefully I've answered all of your questions; if anything isn't clear to you or you have any more, feel free to PM me/reply to me!

Hey guys,

Im also planning on applying to UT for the spring 2012 semester. Has anyone else taken the Hesi? I took it & I know UT doesnt require Chem. or Bio. but does anyone know if it hurts our chances if we skipped them? Because I only took the required sections...

Hello everyone, I'm also a 2012 UT hopeful! I've taken my hesi but didn't score too well on A&P and critical thinking, but it's above the minimum. Cumulative score is only 89%. :(

I've read other forums and have seen people getting accepted with low scores and people getting rejected even with high scores...so I'll still be applying with these scores. If I don't get accepted, I'll retake the hesi and reapply.

My overall gpa so far is 3.5; I'm taking micro, college algebra, and nutrition now during the summer. I'll surely make A's so that will bring up my overall gpa. I will only have philosophy, government, and English(a retake) left to finish my Associates. I should be done with at least a 3.7 gpa. Woo hoo!

Good luck everyone! :)

Hi, great job.

Sorry, I posted to the wrong thread, thought it was Summer, didn't notice it was Spring thread, please accept my apologies.

Thanks for getting back to me. (Hopefully will be able to start sending PMs soon after my next few posts :-)) I spoke with someone at the school who said I had to take HESI first before transcript eval. Don't know how true that is, but I'm waiting to take at least A&P1 first like you suggested before HESI don't want to make any mistakes. Can't seem to find any schools that offers mini classes for A&P2 (I found one that offers a mini summer 5 weeks class with lab) hoping to find one that offers the same length of time for when I'm ready for A&P2. I'll appreciate any further advice you may have as the lady I spoke with (right in the nursing dept) just sounded like she didn't want to be bothered (bad Customer Service)

Thank you in advance and have a great, and safe holiday

I'm applying to the generic program. :)
