Hey all, I thought I would set up a place to discuss the next application period for UTA's Fall 2012 nursing program. There was so much info in the Spring 2012 forum, thought it might be helpful to start a new thread...
Post away!
I hope we do too Marie!! I feel the exact same way...I want to know the gpa's of everyone who made it in ahead of us. We both have 4.0 science and over 3.8 overalls, so I thought for sure there wouldn't be 120 people (or however many spots there are) with gpa's better than that! From what all of the nursing advisors and everyone at the college of nursing told me, it is based mostly off of GPA. But I have a feeling there is more to it than that.
That's ridiculous! Not that I don't think they're worthy to get in, but in my opinion those people who have higher GPA's should be accepted first. Its almost like they are punishing those of us who have not been at UTA long. I was only at UTA 1 semester before I applied, but I have done very well in my classes. I don't understand it at all!
I'm not a fan of it but, I guess it improves the longevity of the school to have people pay for all of those pre-reqs there. I wish I had been given a more clear picture as well when I talked to advisors there. I took 12 hours last semester and killed myself to have A's just so I could apply at UTA. I didn't get in to ithe program with a great GPA which is disheartening. The bright side is, when I'm ready to bridge I will have those classes done. For me the bridge just makes the most sense at this point. I really don't see how re-taking any classes is going to drastically improve my GPA. Also, with no considerations I am seeing it highly unlikely that I would ever get in at UTA by traditional means. I'll just have to get my BSN from UTA in a different way, by the bridge. I would rather spend a year on an ADN program taking new classes than spend time re-taking old with no guarantee. Definitely a great school for nursing. It seems like most of the schools application processes are confusing though.
@thomasphan - Yeah I could understand that as well, but I can't even wrap my head around people getting in with those scores (even though those are good grades) over people with better ones!
The advising is a joke! You get a new one every time you are there and they don't tell you anything that you can't figure out on your own! Plus they confuse the heck out of me!
I also know a few people that got in that are doing horrible in Patho and Pharm right now...and those are pre-nursing classes...if they can't handle those, how can they handle the program? I know GRADES aren't everything but come on! Look at what field we are going into! It's so sad...but hey we gotta get back up and keep it moving!
For those who did not get in. I highly recommend you go to the information session that is posted on your letter. I think you will find it very helpful. If not I suggest you meet in person with your advisor on how you can be more competitive.
For those that are waitlisted, don't give up. Once the acceptance letters are returned then they will probably start calling people off the waiting list. Seems like that is what they did for the spring. So there is still hope! Apply to other schools next time. Take as many courses from UTA, especially the science courses (if you need to). I know you all feel shocked or upset right now because I have been there . Besides, the spring term will not be that far away. GPA is important but I think when there is so much competition that they have to start considering other factors to make their decisions.
Chins up and start enjoying your weekend. Eventually you all will acheive your goals!
Kyllae- That is exactly how I feel. I am in patho and pharm right now and I am on course to get As. I feel like if I am making all As then how can I not get in to the program? I took some courses over the summer at TCC because it worked better with my schedule and when I ask my counselor if I should reconsider taking them at UTA (to get the 30 hr consideration), she said it doesn't matter as long as your making As. Well obviously right now, it seems like As aren't all that matters. I know everything happens for a reason and it will all work out but it is just hard to see past that when we have such high GPAs.
I'll be taking pharm and patho in the summer, Marie. I'm excited to take those because they seem interesting and they are actually nursing related classes. I was at TCC for four semester plus two summers and I only got two B's. I don't think either one of us should be penalized for not taking all of our classes here. From what I've heard though, a lot of people got called off of the waiting list for this spring semester, so I think both of us have a good shot to make it in!
I feel everyones pain as well. I am waitlisted for the campus program and this is my second semester at UTA and I have a 4.0 science and 4.0 overall!!! Just doesn't seem right, but I am not giving up! I am hoping I will be called off the wait list but in the mean time I will accept the ADN spot I was accepted for by Navarro unless I end up getting called by UTA (hopefully not last minute!). So frustrating but there is a plan for me and everyone else!
I am taking Pharm and Patho starting May 14th so hopefully those of you who are taking it at the same time can stay in touch with me :)
Long time lurker here, finally decided to make an account. But based on my observation from the results of the letters, I have concluded that although GPA is weighed fairly heavily into their decisions, UTA favors its students and those who just have more considerations, in general. This may be a bit unfair to those who apply and come from different schools, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Naturally, UTA would be a bit more bias for those students who have attended UTA longer.

kyllae11- I hope we both get in!! If we don't, I find that ridiculous!!
