Hey all, I thought I would set up a place to discuss the next application period for UTA's Fall 2012 nursing program. There was so much info in the Spring 2012 forum, thought it might be helpful to start a new thread...
Post away!
I was waitlisted as well for the on-campus program. I have a 3.84 overall GPA and 3.4 science GPA. I have the additional consideration of a having a previous bachelor's degree. I am currently a UTA student, but I do not have the UTA considerations. When I started reading this blog, I realized how mediocre my science GPA is compared to many of the other applicants.
A friend of mine was accepted to the on-campus program for Fall 2012. She is currently a UTA student without considerations. Her science GPA is 3.75 and overall GPA is approx. 3.8. After reading many of your posts and comparing all the stats of those accepted, rejected, or waitlisted I really don't know how to make sense of any of it.
After reading tygaa's stats(3.75 science, 3.65 overall), it is befuddling that she/he was completely rejected for both programs. Those stats are too similar to my friend's stats who was accepted.
Many of you that are waitlisted have higher stats than her. I often wonder if they consider the school from which prerequisite course work was transferred, but do not say anything about it. After reading about AP getting a kickback from UTA students' online tuition in the Spring 2012 blog, I have seriously started to think we are not being told the entire story about what they consider. Those who were accepted are certainly good candidates- there is no discrepancy there; I just would like to know the story behind those who appear to be unfairly rejected overall.
I can't make sense of their ranking system either. I am guessing the reason so many are waitlisted is because the ONLY GPA that matters are the 4 science courses there are a lot more who re-take stuff and everyone and their dog has a 4.0 science eventually. I really wish they looked at overall GPA too! The CON now knows how popular this program has become and I think they need to open more spots and partner with more hospitals. Peope with high science GPAs need to be accepted, period. For Spring they had 402 out of 700 that were actually eligible for ranking. Obviously only being able to accept 100 people out of 402 just seems insane to me! If you work hard, why are you basically prohibited from ever graduating?? I hope I get called off the waitlist! In the meantime, Spring '13 application is getting sent next week :/
I have to say, respectfully, that, those of you who did not get in should not view an ADN program as a "waste" of your time. Perhaps it isn't your first choice or an ideal path but, it is a path to your BSN. Bridge programs are not nearly as competitive if you're already an RN.
if you want to be a nurse and you didn't get into a BSN program just plan to immediately complete your bridge as soon as you have your RN license. If you don't immediately find work then just complete your degree that way. If you do immediately find work, try to find an employer that will pay for your bridge.
One benefit is that, especially if you go to TCC, you can possibly pay, out of pocket, meaning, no student loans to pay off. That means when you do get a job your money is yours. Seems as if all positive roads to the same end.
I wish every one the best of luck who did and didn't get in. Jut don't quit or turn an ADN away, you can get to the same place with a bit of planning. Oh, and your BSN will still come from the college you choose. So, you would still have a UTA BSN after your coursework for a fraction of the cost.
Things happen or a reason. This could be an extremely positive thing for certain individuals! Positive thinking will get you there! Just don't quit, find another way!
Definitely do an ADN if you plan to immediately do a bridge. I think what the previous posts were saying is that facilities aren't hiring ADN's anymore so be aware of that. A friend of mine is an RN at Baylor (she has her ADN from TCC) and they are making her do the bridge at UTA and are not hiring any other ADNs ever again. I agree, whatever path is the right one for the individual is what they need to do. I think people are misled and think an ADN is "all they need" but it is simply getting tougher for them to find jobs without a BSN.I love this site and have learned so much!

I don't think the C you got counted against you. They only use the prereqs needed to calculate! I amin glad someone got in.....I was wondering if maybe they sent out rejections to all of us. The competition was really steep this round...I am hoping that I will have more considerations this app period since I will have more hours at UTA...I guess if I don't get in after this round I will retake my Chem for an A at UTA....
