Anyone here applied already?
Have you taken the NET exam?
I have completed both background and drug screen. My background and drug screen is gone, but I got the same notice. I called last week and spoke to Joann. She said it was my drug screen that they were waiting on. I did it on April 2 and it still has not changed. Also, I chatted with Spring 2010 students about scrubs. They said they can be any style as long as they are all navy and no border or additional colors. Go on facebook to UT SON Spring 2010 and look at photos. Someone has a the list from their packet last year and that is what I used to start shopping. Hope this helps.
Do we get to pick out our own scrubs as long as they are Navy, or do we have to buy them through the school?
Yes, you can pick out your own scrubs. You do not have to buy them through the school. You will just need to buy the patch and name tag from the school but you'll learn about those when you get your packet.
Lol I know.. I hope it is this week. Does anyone know when we find out what books we will need? I want to get them asap!
I was gonna say go look at the ut nursing bookstore website, but the J1 courses are not listed for the summer since the school isn't admitting any generic students for the summer. It probably won't be posted until july for the fall at the VERY earliest. I could give you the textbook list given to us for this semester, but i'm pretty sure some of the books will be dropped for newer editions by the time you guys start the program.
You guys are more proactive than we were! We just waited for our packet to come in and then did everything in the months to follow. Key for the books though...it will cost you around 1200-1300 bucks...but there are a couple you don't need to buy. Let us know what the list says and we can probably trim that down a few hundred dollars. I think over all getting ready for school with clinical supplies and everything I spent like 2 grand..yeah its a lot, but you can do it in incrimints since labs don't start for the first month of class.
In regards to the holds...its takes a while for the drug screening and background check to come off. I did my stuff for it in April and didn't have it removed until like mid june..so don't freak out!
Working...well some people do, but they don't sleep very much. I tried only working 24 hrs a week on the weekends in an office job and found that getting up at 0530 for 6 days straight made my life hell. Other people I know have quit their jobs too, some don't have an option though and they have to work. I would say that if you don't absolutely have to I wouldn't work.
Nursing school is unlike anything you will ever do. Its not like you can simply go to class read the chapters and ace the tests. B's are the new A's and C=RN. On avg the first semester I probably studied 6hrs a day outside of the classroom and more on the weekends. My GPA going into RN school was a 3.9, now its a 3.0 and I'm thrilled. Just to get you prepared, not to scare you. We got the same lecture as I'm sure the J1s got before they started and I'm sure they will tell you the same thing.
I'm not going to be on here for a bit since we have a crap load of tests this next week, plus presentations but like I said feel free to FB me!
PS did ya'll who got in start a FB page yet?

Yes, we got that lecture also. ALL classes will get that lecture... but they're just trying to get you into the mindset that a C still means that you will be a RN needless. Weekends = more time to study and not have to go in for classes. If you use your time wisely, you will be fine though! It is possible to make good grades (yes, people actually DO make A's... unless we all decide to not study for any of the finals) if you stay on top of your work and make study groups early.
About the textbooks. Out of all of the textbooks, I bought ALL the required books and some of the recommended. The ones I would say to NOT buy are: the nutrition book, the study guides, and the math book (however, i've been told by some J2s that the math book might come in handy for Care II when you start learning how to hang IVs/draw injections and such). Gretch might have more to add to my suggestions. I spent roughly $1300 on all of my supplies, textbooks, scrubs, shoes, stethoscope, etc. Try to do most of your textbook shopping online.
Yeah A's are possible, but no offense Kimmy, but we never had open note/book tests either, neither did we ever get a curve on a test. Ya'll are the first. We lost 20 people last semester to Care and Pharm, only 10 people made A's in care, and some of those were repeats. I don't think they are just trying to let you know that if you make a C all is good. They are letting you know that if you're normally an A student you will get ****** when you don't get one...so they are trying to prepare you for a different type of school. I know lots of people our first semester that had emotional breakdowns at least once during the semester over that 75%...myself included. So its not easy, and staying on top of the reading is not easy, especially if you have a family/husband/wife/kids/want to have a night off to relax.
Math book you can hold up on buying..and I still havn't used my nutrition book. I look at the study guides though...well the one for Med surg cause thats a lot of the NCLEX style questions and thats how the tests are worded in Care I,II, and Health Assessment. I say the Patho (porth), med surg books, pharm, and Fundamentals of nursing book are key, maybe the Bates books too (at least the little one). Plus for clinical you will need your drug book, nurses pocket guide, and manual for lab diagnositic. Mosby's dictionary is awesome too. The pharm study guide is a waste of money though since he doesn't teach that way. Kimmy is right though, use 1/2 price books online and save big! For clinical equipment...I would shy away from the school package (you will see it in your packet), the stethoscope sucks and the scrubs don't hold up, and are itchy. I hear the shoes are comfy though.

I went on like 5 days later and it doesn't matter what time you go but there's going to be a long wait if you go in the afternoon. Try the morning. I did my drug screening and criminal background check and mine still says that but its probably cuz I just did my drug screening Friday. Hopefully....
