Yes, it is extremely early to begin talking about the Spring 2018 class, however, I thought it would be nice if we could all get together here and go through our pre-req/application/acceptance journey. It would be fun to lend support, chronicle our stresses and excitements and see how everything unfolds for us from now until the first day of class (assuming we get accepted).
I'll start:
I'm taking my pre-reqs at Lonestar (10 hrs for Spring, 14 hrs for Summer). I plan to take 18 hrs for Fall and will be testing out of 15 hrs via CLEP. I work PRN in a Critical Care unit at a major hospital. I will be taking the HESI in May; once Spring semester ends. Lastly, I have high hopes to be accepted into the Honors program once I am eligible to apply, since I have a deep interest in research.
I hope to hear from some of you! The application deadline is September 1 and there is a webinar info session at 10am tomorrow.
God bless.
Goodness, if that is the case why did you apply?
Can't speak for Sarah, but I can tell you why I did even after hearing the same things. I've been denied over 10 times to various programs with 2, and most likely 3 being UTH. I have a long list of programs I applied to and there are a few that are my preferred and a few that rank near the bottom in personal preference. In the end I'm going wherever I'm accepted. If I had the luxury to choose due to multiple acceptances that would be a good problem to have, but that hasn't been the case for me. In the end each program will end with you receiving a degree and being able to take the NCLEX.
I work with nurses and nursing students daily and have heard a lot of the same things from current and past students at UTHealth. I admit there's been a few positive things mentioned, but it is rare. A lot of students prefer them for name alone.

Brandon , you took the words straight out of my mouth! This is the fourth time I apply to uth. I also applied to A&M corpus, UTA and Prairie View. It Gets to the point where you just want to get accepted into any nursing school and just hope for a better experience
UTHealth has always been my first choice, for many reasons! However, their way of choosing applicants still confuses me. I wish they were more consistent & we actually knew exactly what they were looking for ... However, those who were accepted I'm happy for you guys. We all deserve it! I wish they had a lot of spots available!!

What are your preferred schools if you don't mind me asking.
Not even going to lie, y'all have me pretty shaken up lol. I have a choice between UTH and UTMB and there is so much good and bad information for both of the schools. Any current students at either school want to weigh in?
I mean I'm only a first semester student but I completely disagree with everything that's been said. I know admissions staff isn't the friendliest but our professors are AMAZING. The admissions staff and more of the "other" faculty are always kinda like that it's super annoying. BUT the teacher and the ones who are there to actually coach you and help you learn are incredible. There are so many people and resources provided for you to succeed and there's a huge tutoring program and everything to help anyone having trouble. I have never felt that the faculty doesn't want me to succeed. It is so much better with your actual education, the other staff though is just not the nicest. Financial aid though seems to be nice if you get the right person. But I've definitely never felt like I'm in a sink or swim situation. I have noticed that the ones that complain are the ones who don't try as hard and get mad because things aren't going their way. It's an extremely difficult program and there are so many good things about it. But they are both amazing schools. From this point out y'all need to make sure you're taking everything that you hear with a grain of salt because it is always a different experience depending on who you talk to and how they did themselves. But everyone I have talked to above me before I even started had so so so many good things to say and I have yet to be proven otherwise
Hi! Thank you so much for such a thorough explanation of your experience so far. It does help me feel a little better about UT. : ) I do have another question that I'm hoping you might give me some insight on. I'm already accepted to TWU, and I'm pretty confident about UT. However, if I happen to get pregnant in the middle of my nursing school, will it basically ruin my chances of getting through nursing school if I am at UT? Do you know if they work well with their students and help us out in this case? Or is it very rigid and minimal leniency... and basically i'll be screwed? (I know its ideal not to be pregnant during nursing school, but just need to know how it would work) Anyone's advice on this matter would be appreciated! Thanks again :)

Okay so I've totally wondered the same thing because I'm engaged and I mean pregnancy seems to be something that is NEVER planned lol. First thing I'll say is that it is very common for some people to take more than 4 semesters to complete the program. I'm not 100% on this but someone said they weren't sure if you could do clinicals if are pregnant (I'm not even sure this is true honestly that would have to be asked) but my guess would be that if you did become pregnant you could take all the lectures as normal and maybe towards the end you would have to push off clinical for 1 semester and take it the next? Possibly? I haven't actually heard anything about this but I've wondered. However TWU doesn't work through the summers right? So you would finish at UTH much sooner than at TWU if that helps with any decision making
@Spring2018 I have spoken to two current students at UTHealth, and one student who just recently graduated from there and all 3 of them said that UTHealth is VERY unforgiving of any unforeseen circumstances. I won't give the specific examples they gave me, but if you do choose UTHealth I would try VERY hard NOT to get pregnant in that time period- lol.
