Hello everyone! I am currently waitlisted in the spring 2017 cohort starting in Jan for the USF MSN-CNL non-nurse cohort 23, but I wanted to start a thread for those of you applying to the summer 2017 semester because if I don't get off the waitlist I will be reapplying for summer, and if I do get off the waitlist I can help you all with info on how the process works and what to expect. Either way, since I am going through it right now, I hope to be able to help new applicants. This time can be very stressful. Who all out there is applying?
i've been with UCSF for a little over 2 years now in a fresno medical education program that serves the entire state - promoting underserved health access and improving underrepresented population representation in health care professions. we mostly work directly with CHC consortia (like SFCCC, along with 13 others) and family medicine residencies, but also work with NP, PA, RN and MA programs throughout the state.
fortunately, they have been aware of my interest in nursing since my initial interview and helped me significantly in this application process. my goals may have actually been a huge contributing factor in their hiring me. i'm sure everyone would be understanding and supportive, even if i had to give short notice. tough thing will be deciding whether i should give notice while still on a waitlist. i don't want to do that...but i also don't want to leave anyone in a bind. who would want to do that...? maybe if i hated my job.
probably i won't be burning any bridges, though, no matter the scenario.
I'm jealous. I've tried for years trying to get a health related job, even unit coordinator, with little luck. The issue is that it would be a huge pay cut for me. But if I don't get in anywhere this year I plan to quit my current job, get a healthcare related job and deal with the pay cut.
yeah...i got my foot in the door with medical education, and i'd really like to teach in a university setting beyond clinicals as a nurse, but right now i have absolutely zero clinical experience. i've only done some in-home elder care, which i guess is not far from what a CNA does. but still, nothing requiring any certification. all my colleagues are MDs, NPs, MPHs, JDs and the like. i'm the least credentialed with the lowest education...so consider myself lucky to be at the table. it's been a nice learning experience to work with faculty, deans, and students at various UC campuses, Stanford and other schools.
most of my work and volunteer efforts have been in medically underserved areas, but more in a public health setting. i'd really like to pursue a MSN/MPH dual degree, which may be a fully structured program by this fall at USF. another reason i'm really hoping for entry. can't beat a two for one deal all wrapped up in 2yrs.
I do wish USF had some certification options for veteran and military healthcare. USF has partnered with Veteran Affairs of Northern California for a BSN that focuses in VMHC but it's a bachelor's and it's in Sacramento.
The University of Colorado Denver has a VMHC certification program that I'm hoping to enroll in but I can't apply until I graduate with my MSN and start working as an RN.
i'm planning further specialization down the road, too. that's one of the beautiful things about nursing.
the MPH can be done in conjunction with the MSN and will be completed within the same 2yrs of the MSN. the nursing department told me they'll let us know about the option early in the MSN program. i've been told by USF that the dual degree option should be formalized by fall. currently, there are some students pursuing both programs simultaneously. the MPH is a part-time program over the two years.
stand alone MPH is my plan if MSN doesn't pan out. unfortunately, the summer deadline is march 15, so i probably won't make that if i don't get into the MSN. sadly, fall deadline is may 15, i think, which won't happen if i'm waitlisted with MSN - you cannot have two applications with USF at the same time, which means you have to withdraw an app to put in a new one. afton knows about that...
I didn't realize you could do the MPH concurrently with the MSN at USF! That's cool!! I have a friend doing the MPH along with med school, we were classmates at USF, seems like so much work! There is so much you can do with an MPH, seems like a good idea for sure. I love this topic of expanding our nursing careers, I love how many options we have, it's seriously amazing! I'm starting to think I may want to do a CNS degree to get specialized and then a doctorate of nursing practice and then go on to teach/conduct research instead of the NP route after I get my MSN at SMU, or I could do both! I love this beautiful field! So exciting!!

aposseadesse, i'm in the same boat with work...only i didn't think things through enough this time around to make any contingency plans. so...a late admission from a waitlist could potentially burn some bridges. i'd definitely take a seat, if offered, even if that came the first day of classes. then...well...that's like the worst way to quit...but...still...burn, baby, burn...
