USC New Grad Program 2011

Published

I have found other threads for previous programs very helpful so I thought I would start one for the new program so that we can talk about it.

So I applied the first day apps opened & am in the process of preparing to send my supplementary stuff. In the personal statement it asks to list your two units of interest and why. I called to ask them if they wanted a general response (like 'med/surg') or to be more specific (like 'med/surg ortho'). They said to be specific. My problem is I don't know all the units. Does anyone know the different units that may (or may not) be hiring new grads?

Also, do you think it would be too far-fetched to choose the ER as one of my units of choice? I ask this because in my job search I have learned that ER new grad positions are extremely competitive & often times the positions available are given to internal applicants only or people with some other kind of "in." All my training, experience, and certifications that I have acquired have been in preparation for ER nursing... So I believe that I am qualified, but I don't want to shoot for something that is impossible & miss out on a position in a less competitive unit.

What do you think?

From what I was told, they're only hiring for the ICUs.

So they are going to hire only 10 people at USC or just in the ICU ?

Its so funny. I got my rejection email once already and another one on Sunday. Hmm...being rejected once is bad enough, now they are reminding me again of the rejection. LOL.

Ohmygosh, that's horrible . As if they need to rub it in ...

@monkeysarecute: where did you hear they are only hiring for the ICU's? Just curious because that is what I applied for and I have yet to get a rejection email......although now that I have posted this, a rejection email is probably being sent to my inbox! haha

Has anyone else heard anything from USC? Cuz I haven't -- and I'm getting a bit worried. I think the last day for interviews is 12/17 which is right around the corner. Just wanted to know if anyone has moved forward or if anyone can share any further information. I applied for the Neuro ICU - which I believe is one of the few units that are taking new grads (?).

Haven't heard anything myself...I applied for the CTICU and am wondering if they are doing interviews yet as well. I haven't heard anything either way. Like you said Sasagrrrl according to their timeline they should be doing interviews now. I know a lot of applications came in. Are they still behind possibly?

@QRN22 and @Sasagrrrl - As of yet, I haven't heard anything either. I have a feeling they're behind on their timeline...but I can't say that for certain. I haven't received a rejection email (yet?) so it really feels like an eerie silence. I will probably try calling them soon, though I have a bad cough right now and may wait another day or so when my voice is more audible :uhoh21: .

Just wanted to update everyone -- I received a call today from USC asking to schedule an interview with them next week !! The call came from an "unknown" number, so if you happen to receive a call like that, be sure to answer! The person who called me said she would email me all the information--where to park, where to go, etc. to the email address I provided.

Hope this helps, and that more people receive calls soon !! It's the moment we've been waiting for :D. Good luck to everyone ! :nurse::heartbeat

I also applied for the CTICUs and have not heard anything. But hold on!---I just now got the call (2:15 local time)!!! I am scheduled for next Thurs afternoon. The person calling could not specify which cardiac ICU unit the interview is for--- HR had previously told me I was being considered for the heart/lung transplant unit on 5W and also the other open heart surgery unit on 4 south.

In terms of where there need for new grads is, I was previously told "our greatest need for nurses is in the ICUs."

Oooh, I'm so excited!

@conure girl -- Congrats ! I got the call at 2:12pm, so it looks like they're really hustling with those calls! I'm scheduled next Friday morning. Thanks for sharing the info. I'm glad they need ICU nurses :nurse: . Good luck !!

Congrats to you too, VanessaRN. Which unit are you interviewing for?

Congrats to those who got an interview. I received a call today from an unknown number @ 2pm. I also scheduled my interview for next Friday. Yikes! Good luck to all and truly sorry for those who didn't get the call... trust me I've been rejected my fair share as well :/ I applied for CTICU and SICU, but wasn't told much during the phone call about the interview process or even which unit I'd be interviewed for. I was caught off guard and forgot to ask!
