USC New Grad Program 2011

Published

I have found other threads for previous programs very helpful so I thought I would start one for the new program so that we can talk about it.

So I applied the first day apps opened & am in the process of preparing to send my supplementary stuff. In the personal statement it asks to list your two units of interest and why. I called to ask them if they wanted a general response (like 'med/surg') or to be more specific (like 'med/surg ortho'). They said to be specific. My problem is I don't know all the units. Does anyone know the different units that may (or may not) be hiring new grads?

Also, do you think it would be too far-fetched to choose the ER as one of my units of choice? I ask this because in my job search I have learned that ER new grad positions are extremely competitive & often times the positions available are given to internal applicants only or people with some other kind of "in." All my training, experience, and certifications that I have acquired have been in preparation for ER nursing... So I believe that I am qualified, but I don't want to shoot for something that is impossible & miss out on a position in a less competitive unit.

What do you think?

Yeah congrats all! I also got called today at 2:10 (we must have all had the quick version from HR) SO excited. My interview is next Friday as well...I applied to CTICU and CT Tele (which I don't think they are hiring for). Good luck to everyone!

@conjure girl, VanessaRN, sdnewgradnurse QRN22: I'm scheduled for an interview next Wednesday. Which units did you guys apply to? I'm so nervous!

@VanessaRN @conure girl @QRN22 @pinky2010 - congrats all on your interviews! that is fantastic news --and all the best on your interviews :) so will you just be interviewing with the nurse manager or both nurse recruiter/manager?

BTW, did any you happen to apply for the neurosciences ICU? (or anyone reading this for that matter)- just getting really anxious!!! blahhh.

@ sasagrrrl -- Thanks! Actually at this point, I'm not really sure! The person who called me gave very little info and reassured me that "everything" will be on the email I'm about to receive...

except I haven't received it yet ! :uhoh3:

I was wondering if anyone else got that email.. I'm thinking perhaps it wouldn't be sent until more calls were made, but I don't know if it's a generic email or if each message contains specifics. That's why I've been holding off from responding until I got more info... but I'm kind of concerned at this point since I haven't received anything yet (yes, I did check my junk mail).

If I don't receive anything by tomorrow, I'll give them a call. Like @sdnewgradnurse, I was kind of caught off-guard too, and though I was about to ask some questions, the caller told me that "all the information" would come to me via email, so I took her word for it. Hope that wasn't a mistake!

I haven't received the promised email yet either---will post when I do. If anyone hears who will be present at the interview (HR or just unit managers) could you please pass that along? Seems like they are interviewing quite a few people for the avail slots---there are several of us for CTICU apparently.

Thanks and good luck to all.

I haven't received the email either. I will also post once I do.

Still waiting for it as well. Will be in touch about it.

I received the email from T. Z. (initials) just now, around 2:27 pm. It looks like they are sending out these emails after they already scheduled everyone, according to department. For the department I applied to, there are 19 names. Panel interview with 2-4 members. All the rest of the info is in the email. Good luck to everyone! :nurse:

Yes, I got the email too. So this really means they are only interviewing 19 of us? Wouldn't it be lovely to see the breakdown of how many interviewees per unit? Last year, there were comments about how nice the interviewers were--hopefully ours will be too. Good luck to everyone.

In reply to my previous post, expanding the subject line in the email tells me that the 19 of us are interviewing for the cardiac ICU. If anyone knows how many slots there are, please let us know. I know there is a unit on 5W and 4 South...

It seems like that majority of people responding to this thread applied for the CTICU. Did any of you guy go to USC for your preceptorship/clinical? Or do you have experience in the CTICU?

As far as I know, they are taking 4-5. I could be wrong though.

Is it just me or are you guys worried that you'll be asked some content questions?

Good luck to everyone!

I have not had any clinical experience at USC, nor any experience in a CVICU---just a short ICU rotation as part of my clinicals.
