does anyone know if it is possible, and how you go about doing it, to get onto an afb w/o having a military id? i am getting commissioned today and then sending back my papers to my recruiter and then he is doing what he needs to do. i woud really like to get my uniforms beforehand, but the nearest afb is scott afb and that is 10 hours away for me. i don't want to get there and then be turned away because i don't have the right stuff....so yeah...how can i get on a base?

I actually had the same chief nurse that I interviewed with sponsor me on base to get my ID/uniforms before COT. Once you get your paperwork together I would send a polite email to the Chief Nurse at Scott (just CC it to your recruiter also that way it looks official and they can verify the information with your recruiter if they need to) and ask if their was a nurse that could come and sponsor you on base and point you in the right direction for a hour or two. The worst they can do is say no.

Most civilian places can tailor your uniforms for you, especially the ones near bases. I haven't taken my uniforms on base for years.

Midinphx, I will be down in SA tomorrow with my son............can't wait. Going to met up with my recruiters wife, they both just orders to the base. She just graduated form COT's last class; yesterday was her first day at work. Today my son and I are going to hit the base here in Abilene to check out what I need. Thankfully he has an extra seabag I can have to stow all the uniforms I will be buying yo transport home.

Oh my son have the Dri Duke shirts very nice, but concerned they will have pulls quickly...he has afew on his shirts. They are comfortable though.

Great to hear there was someone in thier 50's at COT...so maybe I won't be the old lady...lol! I hope I get lucky with a great roommate too.

I hope you had fun on your shopping trip! lol. It can be fun or frustrating depending on how one approaches it.... come to think of it, I guess all things are that way. Attitude is everything. Sometimes I need help with adjusting my attitude. :)

Attitude is everything! Like the shopping trip to San Marcos it was very crowded but I knew that going and also we were on no time limitation so we took our time and enjoyed the day, not grump on crowds. Going to COT I am going with a very but positive attitude. I know that it is what I make of it. It will be hard, exhausting hours, miss my family terribly and I will be tested both mentally and physically but I know that and it is okay. I am looking for the end result, obtaining my goal of becoming an Air Force nurse.

Some people constantly look at the cup half empty, I prefer to look at it half full. Be happy with what you have not with what you do not have. There are too many people like that today and life is too short to live that that. I am in my 40's and of all people on Facebook my kindergarden teacher friended me and many of her other students. Its like where did all those in-between years go?

Smart thing with the uniforms Gerri. There is a place here at Lackland that sews everything on the same day. It is not right the alterations place right next to clothing sales, but down the street.

My date of commissioning was earlier than everyone in my area - one guy by a week. That ended up making me the front of the line and in a leadership position at COT. Remember your commissioning date... mine was tax day. lol.

Hey Mid,

What do you mean about your commissioning date? There are perks to it?

Thanks

Hey All,

I am an RN as of 6/22/10. I'm waiting to commission and hopefully it will take place sometime this week. I was just wondering what is required to access a uniform store on a base. Also, what do I need to get a military ID? I was going to travel to Wright-Patterson AFB which is about 3.5hrs away from me. Can I show my commissioning paperwork or do I have to wait till I get orders? How long does it take from the time of commissioning till I get my orders? Thanks.

There are NO perks to the commissioning date. lol. I wasn't pleased about being front of the line. I was the group commander. That did not correlate with my plan of blending in and not being noticed. You will see. Everyone knew me, and I can't remember 289 trainees and 20 some odd flight commander's names!

Congrats on that new RN behind your name Spooky! You can get to clothing sales with your commissioning papers and ID only. Orders may not come until you are down to a couple of weeks left. Don't worry, that is normal. They know your are going, it's just paperwork. The Air Force doesn't like trees growing.... they prefer them in paper form.

this made me giggle quite a bit. i like paper ; ) my dad works at a paper mill and so did i for 2 years operating an overhead crane swinging 40 ton reels of paper all over the place. fun, great times.

but yes, that is something i have seen with the af. lots of paper.

my headache right now is wells fargo not giving all of my loan information to the lady who needs it. frustrating to the max. PLUS my recruiters e-mail no longer works for me. bah.

I seem to be having the same problem as well, my recruiter's email address seems to not work (everything bounces back), and no one ever picks up the phones (have left multiple messages). I needed to get back to her about some paperwork issue so my paperwork could go to the board, but I have no idea if it got resolved and I have no way of getting in touch with her. Pretty frustrating.

My recruiter's email address changed about a week ago. The 'rs' in the email address became 'randolph'. Maybe all of them changed. I was worried when my email bounced back.

Interesting. I just sent out a trial email to see if that would work, I certainly hope so!

Thank you for the info!
