I've had several folks tell me that nurses usually deliver earlier. Any truth to this? I am HOPING to work up until it's almost time to deliver (since I can't get FMLA yet). -Andrea

I went to term with all four of my kids and I wasn't a nurse until the last one.

Sorry to tell you, but,...........TOTAL urban myth!

You should be able to work up until that time unless you have problems.

I was blessed with an awesome Ob who put me on disability for the last two months of my pregnancy - then I took 4 months off before going back to work part-time. 4 days a pay period.

Believe me, if I could, I would not work. It just about killed me to work even part-time. I did have my inlaws bring my son in to work for me to nurse. That helped.

But I had stayed home with my older children and I felt I cheated my son and I cheated myself by working. I was pretty mad at my husband for working a seasonal job so that we needed the extra income.

As much as I would love to, I'm probably only going to manage about 4 weeks off after baby is born, and that's if she's on time! Lord help me if she decides to show up early.

I won't be getting FMLA since I haven't been at my job a year. I will have a week or two of vacation saved, and the rest is unpaid. :( L will be starting back in nursing school in Jan, so he won't be able to stay at home and babysit. No family around here either. Alas! Full term is good! -Andrea

Even with FMLA, the portion of your leave which is paid is limited to the vacation, sick and holiday time you have saved. FMLA guarantees you 12 weeks off with benefits intact, but does not guarantee you payment for that time.

Do you not have short-term disability? Ours kicks in after two weeks (have to use our earned time to pay for those first two weeks) and then pays a %of our base pay until we're cleared medically which is usually 6 weeks pp for normal SVD or 8 weeks pp for c-section.

Hi- I got sent out from work last week with pre-eclampsia at 26 weeks. Be careful what you wish for. Thank God for short term disability and FMLA.

This is probably a myth as far is just being a deliver nurse will have you deliver earlier. However, I could see how the experience of labor and delivery could affect the length of your labor. The more you know....This could be a simple as observing how woman that augment labor and use pain medication though labor some time (well most of the time) have much longer labors than woman that do it natural with out any interventions that slow things down. Having couched hundreds of woman on how to breath an push, chose positions, ect, could be to a L&D nurse advantage in getting a baby early.

I was in your situation. I started a job 10 weeks pregnant, so I didn't qualify for FLMA either. My hospital, though, offered a "medical leave of absence" for people who didn't qualify for FMLA. It was basically the same as FMLA, but my job wasn't held for me like with FMLA. You could look into that.

Unfortunately, I went into labor at work at 35 weeks. 2 shots of terb stopped the contractions, but I was on bedrest after that and couldn't return to work. Since I used half my leave before the baby was born, I ended up quitting and getting another job when I was ready to return to work.
