Upset - sorry so long

I need some suggestions on how to proceed. I applied for a job online, got the interview, got the job, started orientation today. Now I got a call from HR saying that I didn't click a check mark on a box on the application saying I worked there before.

Honestly I forgot. It was 5 years ago, the HR person reminded me. I got a job in Home health. I wasn't even sure at the time who owned the agency. But in either case, I took the job because I was under the impression that I would be working assignments in my area. As it turned out 'some' of my assignments were in my area (45-60 minutes away from the office) and it only paid, well lets just say very little. The remainder of the assignments were in the area of the office. I got most of the way through training before I actually understood this was going to be the way it was. In either case, I only worked a few days, I thought it was only a couple of days, turns out it was 8. Now the HR person is threatening termination because I falsified my application. I honestly had forgotten about the job, it was only 8 days, 5 years ago. I've been through nursing school since then.

I just don't know what to do. They said that they will talk to the head of nursing to decide what should be done, I may just have to refill out an application or I get terminated.

This is just awful. I really need this job. What does anyone suggest I do? I have orientation tomorrow again, and it goes all day. I orient all week in fact. They said it will be a couple of days before I know what needs to be done. So I am possibly going through the motions only to find out I will lose my job, over 8 days 5 years ago. Help!!??

Well, at this point you are kind of at the mercy of the HR person and whoever she is putting her head together with to make a decision about whether you leave or stay. I've worked as a manager and had to have dealings with HR people in a large institution before and one of the first things I learned was that you don't go making phone calls to employees without having all the facts in front of you and the decision about your employment (staying or leaving) has pretty much been made. That was pretty heartless on her part to do this to you today. She's either inexperienced at her HR job or she's just a nasty person. I'm afraid you're just going to have to sit this one out.

Would it be at all helpful to talk with your manager? Or maybe write a letter to HR explaining the mistake? I don't have any experience with HR or even big institution (I'm still in school) but it seems like there must be some route for your to advocate for yourself.

Okay - Here's another question. Would it be prudent to EMAIL the head of nursing and explain the situation? Orientation takes all day and trying to get away to have a chat with her is near impossible.

Please tell me what you all think. I just am so upset right now.

Submit written, formal letters to HR & nursing to explain your case. Emphasize your honesty & integrity. It sounds like an honest mistake to me.

I would go to my immediate supervisor or manager first if that is not the head of nursing--chain of command protocol. I wouldn't put any specifics into an e-mail, just that you need to discuss something urgent that someone in HR has called you about. This is too serious not to have a face-to-face since it involves your future with the company. You can also try leaving a voice mail, or calling her during a break. Or, even go to her office during a break to see if you can get in to talk with her--orientation just will have to wait until you get this solved. I still say that HR person shouldn't have called you and left you hanging like she did. Whenever you get a chance to talk to someone about this I would definitely mention the anxiety this HR person is putting you through.

Thank you very much. I will put in a call to my direct manager tomorrow, when I get a break - they only give us about 10 min. I will definately say something about the anxiety because I really really am stressed right now. I just can't understand how 8 days can have an effect like this 5 years later. I mean seriously I forgot about the job, didn't put it in my resume, nothing. Oh well, I guess I will just wait and try to talk to someone tomorrow. Thanks again.

Yikes! I can't believe what a big deal HR is making about that... and what a bummer to stress you out like that when you are supposed to be going through orientation :uhoh21: I hope you're able to get it resolved soon. I do agree with the posters who suggest writing a formal letter. It will be important to have that in your file in your defense. Let us know how this plays out.

When you speak to the manager emphasize how you look forward to working there, that you hope this lapse in memory won't affect that and that you are letting her/him know that this issue has come up. DO NOT go on about being stressed---that's your problem, not theirs. You can acknowledge that, what was an honest mistake on your part, has made orientation more stressful (if you think you must or should). Remember...always emphasize the positive, not the negative, treat this a a bump in the road that needs to be fixed calmly and others will be more likely to treat it that way too.

Be careful about talking about this with others at orientation too, for all you know the person sitting next to you is married to the HR person!

Gail-Anne gives really goos advice. Focusing on you, and how this mistake (that you made, not the hospital) has stressed you will not put you in a good light.

However, focusing on how eager you are to begin, and that you are willing to take actions to put it right (filling out another application or whatever), will make you seem responsible and confident.

Shes also very right about talking about it during orientation...it's just too easy to stick your foot in your mouth!

I am wondering though, Is you only worked 8 days, did you leave with proper notice? If not, you may have ended up on a "Not eligible for rehire" list...which may be why the HR person is so annoyed, since she would have hired a not eligible for rehire person, potentially embarassing for her.

Hopefully this will all get itself worked out! Since you are having trouble making the telephone call, it might be easier to call tonight, and leave a message. Its easier to plan out what you will say in a message and also the Manager will have the information on her telephone first thing in the AM, and she will be responsible for contacting you....

When you sign the application, you are guaranteeing that it is without error only to the best of your knowledge. This is a perfectly understandable error. I've worked for companies whose parent company name was now well known. Let them know in a tactful way that what they are doing is against the law.

If they terminate you for something they thought you should have known but you didn't, run to your lawyer's office. You may find they have someone hand picked for the job. You probably wouldn't want to work there anyway. So sue them for wrongful dismissal, take the money elsewhere, and then go home and put your feet up.
