UPS Drivers make HOW much????

Published

It has been broadcast all over the news in my area that UPS is hiring, and that the average UPS driver makes around $76,000 annually! That just totally makes me feel devalued as a nurse. I am not sure what the national averages for nurse salaries are right now, but I am pretty sure it is not that much. I mean, seriously, these people deliver packages (not to devalue them, I have known a few and they work exceptionally hard), but we nurses deliver babies, we keep people alive, we take care of children and the elderly. We are highly educated, knowledgeable, and the responsibility we hold is immense. If the UPS guy screws up, someone might not get their package delivered on time. If a nurse screws up, someone could die. I just cannot reconcile this in my head!!!!

When I first saw this my initial thought was "screw nursing, I'm going to drive the brown truck!" My next thought was, how sad that we are so seriously devalued. What will it take before people realize our value to society? Am I overreacting to this? What are your thoughts?

Again, I want to add that I do not want to sound like I am putting down UPS drivers or similar careers. They work hard and do a great job. It is just that in comparison to the responsibility that we nurses hold, it does not seem that the pay is in line. Not that they deserve less, it is that we deserve at least as much or more for the work that we do!!!

Nursese can make over 100K a year. I'm in Los Angeles, many make around $40-45/hour and it's around $50/hour in the bay area. You add that with overtime - I know some who are bringing home $120k easily - and they are under 30. It all depends on where you live and work. And while the cost of living in LA is expensive, it doesn't necessarily require this type of salary.

I make 50 dollars per hour and I dont make 100 K, I simply just dont believe it, sorry.

Ps. I work long hours!

*** There is no difficulty for competent, experienced RNs to make over $100K/year without working OT. It's just a matter of working in the right hospital or health system in the right area. I make over 100K/year not including OT, as do most of my experienced co-workers. We get 10% differential for nights, except critical care nurses who get 15% for nights. In addition we all work every other weekend and there is a 25% differential for weekends and we get 10 paid holidays a year. Those combined with our base pay adds up to better than 100K for experienced and competent nurses.

$50 an hour x 2080 hours (40 hours a week) is $104K.

I've worked the equivalent of full time this year, although I'm part time. Not a lot of OT. I'm on the lower end of our pay scale. At the end of the year, I will make 90 000. So it is possible. Depends on your base pay and differentials. Many facilities just don't pay their staff well, so when people are saying no way..,.well, that really depends where you work.

Wow.. I'm going to get my brown uni right now!!! ;)

Wow! So your considered a part time employee but work full time hours. Do you want the overtime hours? I ask that question because at my work more then half our staff refuse to work Ot because they have families to go home to. I must admit working 55 to 60 hours every week gets old real quick but I know how very fortunate I am.

I agree that a nurse should be paid more than a UPS driver simply because of the education. However, don't tell me lives depend on your work. It doesn't. The ultimate responsibility falls on the Dr., not the nurse. Yes I work at UPS and my wife is a nurse. I made $81,573 last year and she made $62,126. But, she is home at 230 everyday and all she does all day is hand out meds and take blood pressure. Is 4 years of college really required to do that? To make the $81K I'm away from the house for 13 hours everyday.

And to the nurses who want to become UPS drivers for the money, think again. The first day your sent out with 195 stops with the 2nd stop being some guy getting 15 90lb. packages of computer equipment that needs to be 2-wheeled up his 1/10th of a mile driveway, you're going to quit. Then you can go back to taking blood pressure and handing out medication.

Trust me, you have a good job and good pay. I'm not going to be able to walk or play with my grandkids at age 70. You will.

You've chosen a different job. One could make a lot of money being a lineman or obviously delivering UPS packages. Neither are for me, lol. I do know that they both earn their money. This past Christmas Eve at around 8:00pm we were all seated in the living room having just returned from looking at Christmas lights. I heard a knock at the door and assumed it was more family or friends dropping by. I was astounded to see a UPS delivery guy walking down my driveway having just left a box at my door. I was in dismay that UPS was still delivering, and I felt very sad for the man (who I know). He was missing his family to deliver boxes of crap to random people. That's not worth it to me, and frankly I would rather have gotten my package later and known he was at home comfortably with his children.

Does your wife know how uneducated you are about what she does and what she knows?

Clearly you have never talked to your wife about what her job entails... or never listened when she told you.

LOL! Doctor? What doctor? Not in my job. When I respond to a critical patient call, either there is no doctor at all, or the doctor is a junior resident who usually says something like "Hmmm, PMFB, what do you usually do when this happens?"

Wow is that all we nurses do? My day consists of assessing patients continuously watching for signs of worsening condition! When a code happens pumping on someone's chest when their heart stops and giving them breaths with the ambubag! When and if the patient passes away having the responsibility of telling the family their loved one has passed! Suctioning patients who have trachs and vents, giving them their meds. We are the eyes for the dr if we don't see it by our assessments and let the dr know patients can die. Really it sounds to me that yes you may make plenty of money but you need to educate yourself on what the job description of a nurse is!!!!!!
