UPMC Shadyside

Hi i was thinking about attending UPMC shadyside next year, and i was wondering what everyone thought about it.

also, do they have dorms?

No, there are no dorms. Some of the people have apartments in the Shadyside area, but many live at home. The school is physically located on one floor of Motor Square Garden about 1/2 mile or so from Shadyside Hospital. Some of the 1st year classes are taught at Chatham College in Squirrel Hill. There's a shuttle that runs up there, but I found it a nice 20 minute walk. Chatham College teaches the Micro, A&P, Nutrition, Logic, Diversity, & Human Growth and Development classes, but only the Micro and A&P are actually at Chatham.

I just finished my 2nd semester of the 6 semester full time program. I'm enjoying the program and like the teachers I've had so far. There are a lot of students and sometimes the administration seems a bit disorganized, but seems to be getting better.

The tuition loan forgiveness program was a big plus for me. You agree to work 2 years at UPMC as a nurse after graduation and they pay the tuition. You are responsible for books and uniforms, etc. Also after the 2 years you have to pay income tax on the money that Shadyside paid out for the tuition.

I have 4 more semesters to go in the E/W program. I absolutely love the school and would highly recommend it. I feel I have learned so much! The clinical experiences are wonderful. There are two other threads about UPMC Shadyside on this board so check those out too.

Hi!

I am graduating from UPMC Shadyside in June. This program is one of the best! Shadyside has at least a 98% pass rate on NCLEX consistently. It is a hard program but worth all the work.

I work at Shadyside but didn't go through their program. The nurses that did only have good things to say about it though.

I need help, I recently got accepted to both Citizen's School of Nursing and Shadyside School of Nursing. I need help on deciding which school is better. I live closer to Citizen's therefore I think i'm swaying in that direction. I feel that I don't know much about either school to make such an important decision. Can anyone give me some input?

I don't know anything about Citizen's but Shadyside is a great school. Very high pass rate on nclex as well.

Don't know anything about Citizen's School of Nursing. I'm graduating from Shadyside in a few weeks. I was in a similar situation, having been accepted at two schools. What I considered was

1. NCLEX 1st time pass rates. 2. Cost 3. Class size.

As has been mentioned Shadyside has had a consistently high 1st time NCLEX pass rate.

Shadyside did have a tuition Loan Forgiveness program with UPMC. I don't know if that's still in effect as I see mention of it on one page of their website but not on the other. I'd call the school to find out. Essentially, if I work 2 years at UPMC, the $15,000 tuition is forgiven although I'm still responsible for about $5300 in income taxes on the forgiven loan. As far as class size goes, we had over 100. They split us into 1/3's. Clinical groups were typically about 6 give or take 1, except about 4 for Critical Care.

What won me over to Shadyside was the Loan Forgiveness program and the excellent NCLEX pass rate. I've been happy with the program and I like the teachers. It remains to be seen how I do on the NCLEX.

I've decided to go to Shadyside. I'm so excited to start in September! I was wondering does anyone know if the school is willing to help pay for apartments? I live rather far away from the school and was tossing around the idea of getting an apartment. Another question: does anyone know what apartments students reside in, i'm unfamiliar to the area, and i don't know where to start in looking for a nice, but affordable apartment. A third question: Does anyone belong to the SNAP program, i saw a list of the perks that can be obtained, but i wanted some more information on it. If anyone could help answer any of these questions i'd be very grateful! Thanks a lot!

Hi, Congratulations on getting into Shadyside. No, they do not assist you in paying for housing, but you can take out loans to use for housing. I got an apartment within walking distance of school in the East End neighborhood of Friendship, but other students that live by have rented in Shadyside and Bloomfield. IMO, Shadyside's a little pricier, so I'd check out Friendship, Boomfield, and even Lawenceville first for a more affordable, yet safe housing.

Only 2 weeks till graduation and I'll miss it. It was a lot of work but nice people and a lot of fun.

getting ready to take the entrance exam for shadyside nursing got any helpful tips, ideas or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated been along time since i been in school
