University of Washington's BSN program 2014

Published

Good morning!

So I'm going to try this whole process over again, as a repeat offender...I mean applicant for UW's BSN program 2014. I applied last year, made it through the proctored essay portion but was not accepted. After nursing (haha) my wounds w/ large amounts of ice cream, chocolate & such, I've recently found my mojo to try again. Anyone else re-applying or 1st time applying for 2014? I know it's extremely early in the game, but those deadlines come up faster than you think! I've saved all the tips applicants that have applied more than once and hope that 2nd time is the charm.

Anyone else out there getting ready for it? We got this :D

I feel this is the best I can do. My previous years I thought I followed the directions well and presented my self as a good candidate. This year my application was slightly different, I think I showed better why I wanted to be a nurse I suppose. but, I've applied to other places as well so hopefully I will get accepted somewhere! My friend got rejected her first time, and was accepted the second time. But she said her application was the same. Also, from the people accepted into the program, their way of completing the application are just so different (Resume officially business like, or Resume describing what you saw in nursing) it's hard to see what UW is looking for haha. Do you feel more confident this year? - I remember your posts from last year =)

I looked at my application last year compared to this year and I def feel more confident but still so unsure what they want?!?!

Yes I feel a little more confident but, who knows what they want! haha. I think feeling more confident going into the proctored essay with help. Hopefully the questions are similar as before.. Did you do anything different this year compared to last year? in terms of experience, resume, or essay?

Yes! I took a CNA class, took my exam but failed the skills portion, I mixed up left and right :( I was looking at the patient from the foot of the bed and did left vs the patient's left if that makes sense? So I re-take it on the 7th of Feb, at least I passed the written, right? :/ I didn't realize how much my resume did NOT follow UW's directions. I looked at it and then re-read the directions and I don't know if stress was just killing me or something last year, but I totally screwed the resume up last year. Lol, I fixed it and followed what they wanted to a "T". Experience wise, I was able to volunteer at Madigan Army medical hospital in the plastic surgery center, operating room and urology clinic. I asked all the nurses I worked with different questions regarding relating strengths and weaknesses, how to improve what I felt were my weaknesses. Last year, all I had was basically a walk in clinic, dealing mostly with cold/flu symptoms. I only got 120ish hours last year, I was able to scrounge 228 this year, so hours wise, not much difference, but hoping with the different exposures to settings and talking to all the different nurses, I def. feel more confident in writing the essay if I'm asked to. I want to start practicing and think I'll just use what I remember from last years. Basically they gave three patients, than you had to do strength/weakness on why you picked them, why didn't you pick the others, and how you can grow from them, right? Than all the stupid math on back ;)

Do you remember the math problems?

Basic dosage calculation, easy stuff but you have to show work. I overthought it bc I was like "this is too easy!, can't be right"

Like d/h x V or conversions?

Yea just choosing which patient, and easy math calculations. I also over thought it because it was easy hahaha. They might have a different situation though? Can you explain what you did wrong on your resume last time? Everyone always stresses the importance of following the directions, i feel like i triple check everything at minimum, but maybe I missed something

@ brooke. Not coversions like, patient weights x amount and takes y amount of medicine for weight. how much medicine will the patient take if he weighs x much. Or patient needs to take 15 mg of something every 4 hours in a 24 hour period. how many doses will you give him in 1 day. like those things.

That's not to bad.

I put actual patient interaction under my healthcare experience, very in depth & detailed. I also put all of my military work experience...didn't stick to their list. So mad at myself! But still don't think I would of made it bc I blew my say, just got so overwhelmed with writing my draft that I just kept repeating myself & not making sense related to the questions.
