University of Washington (UW) - ABSN 2020

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone! Just wanted to start a forum for those applying to University of Washington's ABSN program for Fall 2020. I'm applying from California and unfortunately, I don't have any healthcare experience working directly with/under nurses as I'm an ophthalmic technician. I graduated last year with a BS in Health Science with a focus in Community Health.

Any feedback/advice on becoming a stronger applicant are welcome, or sharing your progress in the application is great too! Thanks! ?

Specializes in Oncology Clinical Research.

I did not receive a confirmation.

Specializes in School Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing.

I haven't gotten a confirmation either.

I was wondering, of the people who have been accepted, do any of you have kids? I have two kiddos- ages 8 and 10- and would love to connect with other parents when school starts (or before, if you're in the area).

Good luck to everyone with the various preparations for school! It's pretty exciting!

hi all! excited to be joining you all in the fall ? i also haven't gotten any sort of confirmation.

I also have children 10 months and 2 years old! I also did not recieve a confirmation. Has anyone else submitted their post bacc app?

Happy to know there will be other parents in the program! Maybe we can connect when school starts.

I submitted my postbac app a couple of weeks ago, and just completed the FAFSA two days ago. It feels good to get them done.

Hello Everyone,

I am working full time in a non-related field and am interested in applying for the UW ABSN program. I have all the prerequisites except the 100 hours hands on experience. I am wondering if just volunteering for 100 hours is sufficient to being accepted into the program or if I should quit my job to work as a CNA. (I have volunteered on and off at hospitals in the past since I had intentions to apply to medical school, but this is more than 5 years ago). I realized I had to stick with my field of study to pay off my student loans first.

My concern is that I quit my full time job to become a CNA, not get accepted into the program, and work as a CNA longer than expected and not be able to support myself financially (mortgage and family obligations). Does anyone know the acceptance rate for the program? I was not able to find this online.

Thanks!

@tm528 According to the UW website, CNA experience is not required. You can be accepted with the required number of volunteer hours and shadowing RNs. I think it really depends on how strong the rest of your application is (grades, recommendation, CV).

Hi! Congrats on getting ready to apply, that’s so exciting! I was accepted into the program this year and I never worked as a CNA. However, I had a good amount of experience working directly with nurses in a mental health setting in addition to around 100 hours of volunteering on a med surg floor. I think that whether you get accepted is dependent on a lot of factors, but I know they really want to see you explain your experiences and how they have exposed you to the profession. There are some recordings on the website that I found really helpful.
Also, as far as acceptance rate, I think it varies year to year but this year there were a little over 300 applicants and they accepted 64. So around 20%!

Awesome thanks for the response! If not accepted, I was looking at 6 quarter ADN programs at a community college then work on RN-BSN while working as an ADN-RN. This path seemed attractive since it would cost much less and starts sooner than the following Autumn. This would be the alternative to waiting another year to be accepted to the program.

Scenario:

A) Not accepted for 2021/Accepted Autumn 2022 - Complete BSN by Autumn2023

B) Not accepted for 2021 ABSN/Accepted to 6-quarter ADN Winter 2021: Complete ADN Autumn 2022->Complete RN-BSN Autumn2023/Winter2024

Does this sound reasonable? Is this what people who have not been accepted are doing? (Moving for a 1-year program is not feasible at this time)

Hi All,

I have just sent out an update on the ABSN Waitlist!

I'll try and send updates when there is any additional movement on the waitlist.

I am also confirming that we have received everyone's Intent to Register form (not to be confused with everyone accepting the offer).

It's so nice to see someone else with young kids! I have one (7 months)--both a concern and motivation for the program!

I also have a baby - an 11 month old! I was wondering if anyone had a general idea as to what the weekly schedule will be like, for childcare planning purposes.
