University of Victoria (UVic) Nurse Practitioner Masters Program - Fall 2025

Published

Hi NP hopefuls! Starting a thread for those applying to the UVic NP Program for fall 2025. I am an RN who graduated from U of C in 2020 and have been working in cardiology in Calgary since.

Specializes in ICU/Sexual Health/PICC.

@ShellyTheJelly- they told me it would be arriving sometime this week. I haven't received it yet.

Has anyone who has been recommended by department received any email yet?

Not yet!

Has anyone got an decline in their portal? Mine still says under review by department.

Hi! Does anyone know if historically any post MN candidates have turned down UVic for another school? Trying to set my waitlist expectations haha

Specializes in Pediatrics, Acute Care, Community Health.

For the Post-MN steam I confirmed that they have 5 spots reserved. The waitlist for Post-MN NP is different from the waitlist for the MN-NP stream. They have given those who received acceptance three weeks to respond. They said to check back at the end of April to see if there is any waitlist movement.

@Peds Nurse 02 did they give you any indication of potential movement? or have you heard historically has this smaller waitlist moved?

They did not say. I'm sure it really depends on the applicants (if they've applied to other programs etc.). It feels stressful waiting, I know!

Hi guys,

I got accepted this year after being waitlisted last year at UVic and rejected everywhere else. I have 11 years nursing experience, critical care advanced nursing certificate, certified practice in contraceptive management, picc clinician... and I got rejected hardcore last year. I asked every school for feedback and the only one who did was UVic, so UVic was the only place I applied again this year. I was so bitter.

They (UVic) told me (when I was waitlisted) that I had a competitive GPA, strong references, strong work experience, and a strong admissions essay. They had MINIMAL constructive feedback for me as to how I could be more competitive next time (ie this year) except they did tell me:

-Shadow an NP and write about it in your admissions essay

-Explain the role of the NP more clearly

AND THAT IS IT. I was absolutely devastated last year because I happened to know some of the nurses who made it in and I did not understand what they had that I did not. Things that I did in addition that I was able to highlight in the "reapplication letter" that they ask you to do if you've applied before- I took a couple of continuing education courses through coursera and UBC CPD to beef up my cultural awareness, and I went to NNPBC conferences with my partner (an NP) anytime I had the chance/guests were invited.

It seems to be a crapshoot. I am grateful that I got in this year... but I do believe it was luck. Unpopular opinion, I am sure. Make sure to ask them for feedback on what you could have done to be more competitive.

I just found this thread now... Does "recommended by department" mean you will be accepted? I've been trying to figure out what it means all day..

Specializes in High Acuity.

Hi Guys,

Mine still says "under review by department" but I wanted to share I was waitlisted at UVIC the past 2 years. The first year I was #12 on the list and got up to #4. Last year I was #20 and moved up to #14. So I think if you are in the top 10 on the list you have a good chance.

Hi! This is my first time applying and I was waitlisted. I'm further down the list for the MN-NP stream. Was rejected from UBC so happy to not get a full on rejection even though I don't have the greatest chance. I understand that waitlist movement can be unpredictable, but does anyone have any insight on whether people in my situation have had success?

Specializes in pediatric critical care, PAR, community health.

Now that I've slightly recovered from not getting into the program, I would love to hear from people who did get in. Do you have any tips or did anything experience-wise that you think worked towards your success? I am trying to gage whether or not I should apply again and if there is anyway to up my chances.

Thanks!

Did you receive an update saying you weren't accepted ? I'm still waiting for an update on mine.

My portal is still saying "under review by department.”
Trying to figure out if this means I am waitlisted or rejected. Anyone have any input? Have some people had their status change to "waitlist" on the portal?
I haven't received any emails from UVIC about my status so just trying to put feelers out so I can either move on or continue to eagerly wait for more information from the department. Thanks 😊
