University of South Florida Accelerated BSN

Anyone have any insight on this program? I'm in the process of applying and would love to know about the school!

Yes that would be nice if we knew people that were not far from us. I do not mind going to Tampa general ( I think) because clinicals are only once a week. I would like to go to the VA hospital but I don't think that is one the hospitals.

Pita16 lol I think when you get here you will realize that this place is huge and will need a car.

Well Im off to look at some more places!

I thought the VA hospital was one of them? It would be nice considering it is right across the street from the college of nursing..you could just walk to clinicals from class! Talk about convenient.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely getting a car very soon! There is NO way I could function there without one lol! From what they told me I do believe that the VA is one of our choices. There are around 6 different sites we can choose from. I would for sure be up for carpooling, that is a very good idea. Also, I think we have 1 clinical day the first semester, but the second semester we might have 2 clinical days- I'm not positive though.

I know for sure TGH, STJ (st josephs), and the VA are the choices and I think one other for the accelerated-- I didn't know what the initals stood for though

Carpooling is great! I just got back from the nursing building. They have signs up already and everything! I had to go turn in my health form because it said in that packet turn in by July 29.

I actually found a place to live also...woohoo

Awesome! :)

Where did you decide to live at? Close to campus?

So..what did everyone think about today? :)

I didn't even get to meet you today:no: lol. Maybe tomorrow...

I know! I met Barbie and that was about it! Theres so many people and I have no idea what you look like so its hard! haha

Howdy!

I am currently doing my pre-reqs to get into nursing school and wanted a little information on the ABSN program at USF (already have a BA from there -- Go Bulls!!!). I'm trying to decide whether to do it straight through or go to Pasco-Hernando Community College (I live in New Port Richey) to do an ASN and do a transitional RN-BSN program later on. If I were to start the program at USF in the Summer session, how many months would it take to complete? Also, how many credit hours do you take each semester? Is it evenly broken up or is it differently structured than then regular classes? How many days a week do you go to lecture/clinicals? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for any info you can give!!!

P.S. Where are doing your CNM? I am interested in pursuing that avenue and was just curious.

USF has a good nursing program. I really liked the instructors. :) In the accelerated program there are not as many clinical sites to choose from as the upper division/traditional nursing students, but in the end I was satisfied with where I was placed. You grow very close to your clinical team. It is a fast-paced, challenging program, but many students made it through. Whenever you are able to send PMs, feel free to PM me any time for more info!

I applied to the program this past fall but was not accepted as it's a very competitive program. I'm currently in an ADN program and will then do a MSN program for RN's with BS degrees that aren't in nursing (both USF and UT offer such programs) With that being said I did a ton of research on the program and can offer some information. 1. If you start in the summer you'll finish the following summer. Program is four semesters, summer, fall, spring, summer and I believe the credit hours vary between 18-22. You will be in clinicals two days a week. There are typically 36 seats available in the accelerated program and they use a rubric to decide who is accepted. There are four parts to the Rubric: 1. Pre-reg grades - 2. CUM GPA - 3. Writing Sample - 4. Resume. Your math and science pre-regs carry the most weight (API, APII, MCB, STAT) I believe it's 3 points for a A, 2 points for a B and nothing for a C. After that it's your CUM GPA with 3.0-3.20 receiving no points, 3.21-3.40 receiving 1 point and so on. I believe the writing sample are resume are worth 3 points a piece but unless you have some healthcare experience don't expect a bunch of points for your resume. Just a reminder to watch your application deadlines. March 15 is the summer deadline and ALL pre-regs must be completed by that date. If you'll be taking a pre-reg in the Spring you'd be applying to Fall 2011.

Hope the info is helpful.

Hello, I am currently in the program and just started this fall. I have been getting lots of advice from people who got in this summer and they say they only had 10 weeks (we have 16) so it is more difficult, but it is absolutely doable you just have to truly understand that these ten weeks will require a lot of your time.

My personal schedule: I have classes two days a week (8-5:15), lab tuesdays and clinicals once a week. Not bad at all. Since I am retaking Pathophysiology I have 17 cred hrs. this semester, but if they accept your patho you will have 13. The program is not accelerated until the second semester. I will have 22 cred hrs. and I know I have 2 days a week in clinicals-- one 12 hr and one 10 hr. They say if you make through that second semester you are good to go.

Definitely apply. I heard there was around 800 applications for fall 2010. They took 36 absn and 60 upper division. Very competitive. I hope the 800 wasn't just for the absn program! I had a 3.4 but many of my peers are 3.8 and above! Hope your A&P grades were high because professors say "remember this from a&p?" ALL THE TIME! We have great instructors here, they really engage you in learning. Have your pre-reqs done before summer.

Any more questions just let me know!
