University of South Alabama Psychiatric NP program

Published

Hello,

I have applied to USA's online Psychiatric NP program for Spring 2015. I just wanted to hear from anyone else who has and what their GPA/experience/ ect they have. My GPA is low, but I feel like I have a lot of experience. Any current or former students have any insight as to how many they accept with a lower GPA if any? Does experience really count for anything? Also, has anyone who applied for the Spring 2015 semester heard from USA about their application being complete? Any info would be great, and just to hear from people who are also waiting to hear back.

Thanks

Vickster1, Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm able to take the whole wait a little less personally, for a minute or two. But it's still pretty frustrating.

I've already been accepted to Eastern KY University, and postponed enrollment until August, for reasons around financial aid, but also because I'm trying to see if I get in at Univ of So Alabama. The EKU program takes 3 full years to complete, which might not be so bad, if I were in my twenties. It appears the completion time for U of SA is less. Also, I know NP's who graduated from U of SA and they were happy with the program and and have great jobs.

Best of luck to you as well! Definitely post when you hear word- I will as well :)

What was your GPA and how many years were you a psych nurse ? I want to get into a psych program.

I am just joining this site and happy to have found people with the same questions I have.

I have 3 years of critical care experience but no direct psych experience. 3.3 GPA when I graduated from my university's BSN program. Just wondering what I'm getting myself into or if they even accept applicants with no prior psych experience.

Also, what is the program like if anyone is able to elaborate? For instance, i am working night shift. How feasible is this in the early stages of schooling? I know i will probably have to switch to day shift or possibly take a PRN position later in the program if accepted. Are there any major thesis projects for just the MSN track? I know my undergrad university just started a masters program, but i believe they are only offering the DNP track and there are two semesters just devoted to a "thesis". I'm trying to choose the right university for me.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

An update of sorts...

I emailed U of SA for the second time since April 1, to ask about the status of things.

To their credit, they do reply- I heard from them today via email. They replied that the decision-making is taking longer than anticipated, and hopefully they will be sending out letters within...yep, the next 2 weeks.

The suspense is killing me.

I've already decided if I don't get in, I'll redouble my efforts, address whatever application deficiencies they may cite, and re-apply for Spring '16.

But I really want/need to get in for Fall '15

Or maybe I'll sit down, shut up and go forward with EKU...(my back up plan.)

Keeping fingers crossed for all of us!

Keep me posted on what you hear...

this is great info! I'm applying for next fall (2016) for USA's Psychiatric nurse Practitioner program. Is there any way we could keep in touch? Maybe trade emails? I'd love to know your experiences at USA with the program!

I'm not sure how the messaging feature of the site works, and need to look more closely, but yeah, would definitely like to keep in touch, share info.

Are you in the USA program now?

HELLO! Any of the original or previous posters currently or recently graduated from USA? How is/was the program? Response times? Availability for help? Feedback on performance for learning from mistakes? I'm worried about some of the poor reviews I've read.....Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm interested in FNP or Psych (MSN). Thank you!

I would like to know about the psych np program as well. I heard that when you do your clinical that it has to be with a psychiatric np. Is this true. Not many residents in my area. I work inpatient psych unit and the providers are FNP but not psych.

I've sent emails to them requesting information and they are fairly quick (1-3 days) to respond.....Do you work for a private hospital? Do the FNPs have extra training in psych or there is just a lack of PMHNPs so the hospital recruits for FNPs that have an interest in psych? Thanks!

I work for a non profit organization. They are trained as psych fnp. They do lack the PMHNP. One is considering going back for PMHNP.

KayFuryPsychRN are you starting the PMHNP program this fall(2016)? I will be starting the BSN-MSN program.
