University of San Francisco Entry Level MSN CNL spring 2014

Published

Has anyone else out there applied to University of San Francisco Entry Level MSN CNL program for spring 2014?

In terms of living situations, people have lived in the south bay, east bay, and north bay and commute to classes in the city. It's up to you if you decide to move to the city or not (cost of living is higher here). It just depends on if you want to sit in your car during commuting time. I've heard that it's easier to find a few other people when the semester starts to commute with them if they're also from that area (rotating who drives each week).

@statsleeper It's good to know that others have taken the commuting option. Your idea about carpooling and taking turns is a nice idea. Thanks for the input!

@SJforlife11

Congratulations on your early acceptance! I'm jealous you have already been stress free for almost two weeks!

I was just wondering if you have gotten any further information regarding the program from USF besides your acceptance? Was it a simple letter or did they include a packet of information/forms/etc.?

Thanks!

You are welcome SJforlife11.

@emzie25, once you're accepted, the school will want a $500 deposit. The letter will also tell you to purchase your scrubs and other materials you will need for clinicals (yes, you start the first semester). You'll also need positive titers on your immunizations, a recent PPD test, recent flu shot, and you will submit to a background and urine test. If you're not cleared for these things, you will not be able to start your clinical rotation. Not to overwhelm you, but just thought I would give you all a heads up in case you need to start making arrangements with your primary care to obtain these documents.

@emzie25 Thank you! I am excited to start this journey into nursing. Hang in there, I remember how I always checked my online status and phone calls. The I only found out when I received the letter in the mailbox. The envelope is white (a little larger than an 8x10 paper) and includes

1. the letter,

2. the sample curriculum, and

3. an estimated budget sheet.

Within the letter they include instructions on how to submit the $500 deposit and have an online link to the Orientation Steps on the USF website. On the website, you'll need to print out several sheets for the clinical health requirements. My online status was only updated 5 days after the letter arrived. I agree with statsleeper, we need to complete many health requirements in such a short period of time, but it's kind of exciting to know that it is happening! I saw my physician today for my clinical requirements and recently finished my background check and drug test. Hope this helps. I am rooting for everyone here!

It says that my PM is disabled, does anyone know how to activate this?? I can't send private messages.

@sjforlife11 it's a preventative measure by allnurses.com to stop spammers. You have to have X amount of public posts before you can PM people. I think it was 5-10 posts, not sure.

@SJforlife11 Have you registered for classes yet?

I find it strange that there is only 4 people total that have registered for classes. The letter we received in the mail on the 29th stated we would have until the 17th of December to to commit and pay the $500 down deposit. They MUST be sending out more acceptances soon for those of you who are waiting to hear. I know how terrible the waiting period can be, I've been there before. But to me, it seems as if there are still many spots to be filled!

@statsleeper Thank you for all of your insight! Nothing was mentioned in the letter on where to buy our scrubs or what styles are allowed. Even on the online orientation things are still very vague. Where do people usually get them or are there styles that you like more than others? And as far as stethoscope, what would your recommended price range be? I want to have a nice one, however I don't know if its worth it to get a really nice one until I'm actually practicing. Thanks again for your time!

@andaughe For scrubs, it's really up to you on how much you want to spend. Some brands definitely feel better than other ones. I know the grey's anatomy brand is really nice but it's one of the more expensive brands. I would definitely recommend going to a store in person to try a few so you know what size to buy. I did that and purchased everything online. I usually look at pulseuniform or allheart.com but you can shop anywhere. It should be mentioned in your orientation packet but your scrubs should have to be all white. There is a rumor swirling around that the colors may be changing, but again, it's a rumor. So, whatever color it says to buy in the packet, I would stick to that.

As for your stethoscope, I had the same problem picking mine. Some people recommend just buying a cheap one since you may lose it... but I haven't met anyone yet who has lost their stethoscope. Littmann is a highly recommended brand. The Littmann Classic II is recommended by a lot of people and ranges from 60-70. If you have money to spare, Littmann Cardio III is another good choice but that ranges from $130-150... depending on where you shop. I've been told the cardio is good to have when you're out of school and practicing but for nursing school purposes, the classic is a fine choice. For me, I looked towards the future and didn't want to buy another stethoscope, so I went ahead and bought the Cardio III. There are other brands that I'm sure that are just as good and the school has a vendor that sells another brand as well. Hope this helps!

Where else did you get in? I got my rejection letter too and I wish they would have told me why...

@Nicolekay I would hold off on the drug screening/background check since the school has a company in mind for those results.
