Hello,

I sent in my application to Univ of Rochester (for the accelerated BSN) last week- but like you, I don't really know how hard it is to get into. I have heard that they accept a large number, like 150....so let's hope! Pretty dang expensive though, eh?

I just emailed the admissons advisor and she said last year they had 250 applications and accepted ~100 applications. Program is really expensive.

I don't know if this is true, but several people told me the Rochester area has a high crime rate. I checked online and compared the crime stats with Seattle, WA. Rochester's crime rate looks pretty bad. Seattle has 2x the people than in Rochester.

Does anyone have any info on the Rochester area?

Thanks a lot for your input. I definately think that the program is expensive and i am hoping that all goes well for each and every one of us.

I live in Rochester. It is true that we do have a high crime rate, but there are really only certain areas of the city that are shady. I have lived here my whole life and I think it is great place to live. Most of the suburbs are safe. If you have any specific questions, I can try to answer them for you!

Hi, I was wondering if there is anyone applying to University of Rochester 2nd degree program(BSN). Additionally, i would appreciate any info on how easy/ hard it is to get in as well as any relevant info individuals might be willing to share.

I live in Rochester and although I got my ADN from MCC, I have U of R students doing their rotations on my floor. They seem very well put together and it seems the program is pretty good.

Its spendy, but if you have an employer to pay for it I say go for it. Im going to get my bachelors there.

Don't worry about crime rate, its true what coleen said. Its only in certain areas.

Hey Julie,

I sent in my application too and I havent heard back for an interview yet.

The admissions lady said they were going to interview everyone that applied. Did you apply for the accelerated Masters or BSN? How did the interview go? When did you apply? It seems like I applied a week before the deadline and I have not heard back yet. I applied for the accelerated msn in the psych focus. I'm getting nervous, I hope they got my application! I am so anxious just waiting...

I applied for the Accelerated BSN program, and had my interview on Thursday. Wow. I prepared quite a bit and the lady didn't even really ask any questions! It was great! Basically at the start of the interview she said, "don't worry, i'm not going to ask you any hard questions." And she didn't. Basically, she said that she doesn't review the person's file at all beforehand (so each interview begins with a blank slate)- so she won't know anything about you, so you are just supposed to talk about your life thus far and what has lead you to want to become a nurse. She was super nice and talked a lot about the school and Rochester and practical stuff. I didn't quite catch the number of how many applications they had recieved- although she did say- I think it was either 159 or 259 (I don't know why I didn't ask her to clarify, nerves I guess). She said they were accepting 75 into the program this year and that there were a lot of applicants that already had advanced degrees- yikes!

So for the accelerated MSN, do you start out doing the accelerated BSN and then move on to the MSN, or are you already a nurse? Good luck, you will be fine!

Geez, looks like competition is going to be tough. I wanted to apply to the accelerated BSN/MSN track b/c I knew already I wanted to be an psych NP. I dont know if the admissions process is the same though since I am doing the MSN route.

Double Wow, if they got 259 apps this year for only 75 spots! The admissions director said they had about 100 spots last year! I wonder if the people with advanced degrees are considered more competitive? I wonder how they are going to decide because I bet there are definitely more qualified applicants than spots available.

Well, it definitely is competitive, although there is a big difference between 159 and 259! I wish I knew what it was- either you would have almost a 50% chance of getting in vs less than a 30% chance, big difference! If you find out the real number from your interview, would you post it here? Also, she did say that 100 of us would begin the program in the summer but that 25 of the spots are already secured to some people (i guess from last year?).

I also know which specialty I want but U or Rochester doesn't have it, so I figured I'd try and just get the BSN first and then i'll have many more options for MSN programs later. Can you get accepted into the accelerated BSN without getting into the combined BSN/MSN option or will they not even consider you? Would you do the BSN only if that was the case or would you go somewhere else? Where else are you applying if you don't mind me asking?

I would guess that the people who already have advanced degrees have a better shot but there are also other factors that could play a part- like past medical experience, what your prior degree is in, what your grades were like, and other life experience, jobs you've had since graduating, and volunteer experience.
