University of Rochester

Hi, I was wondering if there is anyone applying to University of Rochester 2nd degree program(BSN). Additionally, i would appreciate any info on how easy/ hard it is to get in as well as any relevant info individuals might be willing to share.

Lisa,

Well, it definitely is competitive, although there is a big difference between 159 and 259! I wish I knew what it was- either you would have almost a 50% chance of getting in vs less than a 30% chance, big difference! If you find out the real number from your interview, would you post it here? Also, she did say that 100 of us would begin the program in the summer but that 25 of the spots are already secured to some people (i guess from last year?).

I also know which specialty I want but U or Rochester doesn't have it, so I figured I'd try and just get the BSN first and then i'll have many more options for MSN programs later. Can you get accepted into the accelerated BSN without getting into the combined BSN/MSN option or will they not even consider you? Would you do the BSN only if that was the case or would you go somewhere else? Where else are you applying if you don't mind me asking?

I would guess that the people who already have advanced degrees have a better shot but there are also other factors that could play a part- like past medical experience, what your prior degree is in, what your grades were like, and other life experience, jobs you've had since graduating, and volunteer experience.

Well, again, good luck with everything!:)

Hey Julie,

I'll post the number of applicants, I still havent been contacted for an interview yet. I applied on the 26th so I guess thats not too long ago given the holiday. Although, I also get this apprehensive feeling that my applications get lost in the mail....

I would think if I didnt get into the MSN part, I probably wouldnt be accepted to the BSN part either? Not sure, but probably a good question to ask during my interview? But the applications between the two programs were different.

I applied to Rochester, Colorado State U and . I got in my application late for Drexel so I dont know if that will even count. I noticed your from the westcoast. I'm from Seattle Washington but the programs are way too competitive out here. I actually thought Rochester would be less competitive but I guess not...It is a really good school though, I've heard great things about it. Did you apply to schools in CA? What schools did you apply for? Are you doing accelerated BSN programs only or looking at direct entry? I was really shooting for the direct-entry programs, but again a lot more competitive! There are a lot more accelerated BSN programs versus BSN/MSN programs out there.

Well good luck to you too julie! hey would you actually go to Rochester if you got in? I'm definitely more a westcoast gal myself, but at this point all nursing programs are pretty competitive! I think I would go where ever they accept me! :) Hopefully, I would have a choice between schools though!

Lisa,

I just found out I got into NYU's accelerated BSN program today, and it starts Jan 16, 2007....so i'll be making the move from rural northern california to new york city in a "new york minute"! Yikes!

I also applied all over, to accelerated bachelors and direct entry masters programs (in midwifery and women health)...just tried to increase my chances of getting in somewhere. I think the accelerated BSN programs are nice because you can get it done quick and then have more options for masters programs later...say, on the west coast! I'd really like to get my masters in nurse-midwifery from oregon health and sciences university in Portland, and I bet i'll have a much better shot getting into their regular masters after i get my BSN than their direct entry option. It takes about the same amount of time anyway.

Well, good luck to you, i'm sure you'll get there!

I live in Rochester NY, ADN from MCC and soon I will start to get my BS from U or R. It is a great school and your degree will be very well respected anywhere in the country.

The crime rate lately in Rochester is crazy, but unless your in the inner city dealing drugs in the middle of the night you'll be fine. There are many great areas of the city and the suburbs are beautiful.

Hello,

I'm about to have my phone interview. Any extra advice? I'm pretty confident on what I will say because this is the field I'm very passionate about. But I'm still bit nervous, and advice is welcomed (o=

Just to clear up the numbers.. they have 280 applicants this year and 76 spots avaliable.

Thanks!

Hi,

So, I finally scheduled an interview with a faculty member. I guess she is really busy or something. Anyhow, as far as numbers I was told something different. The admissions person told me they got a 256 "on time applications" for 75 spots this year. So, I dont know if 24 of those applications came in late or they include the incomplete applications.

Hello Everyone. I just accepted my invitation to the Accelerated BSN program at Rochester! I am so excited! If any of you decided to attend Rochester in May 2007 let me know.

Krista

congrats, Could you give me an idea of your stats. Wow! Good luck in your future studies.

That's great! Congratulations on your acceptance! From what I have heard, it is a great program. I have a friend who started the accelerated program this summer and she seemed to like it, although it is a lot of work (as is any nursing program anywhere)! I found out about a week ago that I was accepted for the accelerated program at Rochester but I've decided on another program. I had a 3.3 undergrad GPA in biology, got 4.0 in all pre-reqs, i'm an EMT and a doula, and I volunteer at the local hospital for a few hours every week. It seems like Rochester is really into diversity and the woman told me during my interview that my previous healthcare experience strengthened my application a lot...sooo...hope that helps!

Good luck to all of you still interviewing and waiting to hear back!
