University of Rochester Accelerated Nursing Program - ABPNN

U.S.A. New York

I just got accepted into U of R's accelerated bachelors nursing program. Just wanted to start a thread to see who else is going there!

Hey I had my interview last week. I think she said 56 was the number (which is about 55 but maybe that one extra spot will add a little relief) that they were accepting, and that there were ~225 applicants. My interviewer also said that they were shooting for late September for mailing off the decisions. I wouldn't be too worried if you have an interview coming up, I was really nervous too but like (CSy) said, she did most of the talking. It was more like a regular conversation than what I think of as an "interview." Good luck if you still have yours! Keep updating if you hear any new information!

so there's an acceptance rate of 25%....im surprised they decreased the number of seat and more so at the fact that they interview everyone. That's so time consuming on their end, and doesn't give us anymore clues as to our chances :-/ in anycase...i hope we all get an offer, and thanks for the update guys. Just wondering, has anyone had their reference called from the school (prior of after the interview). Is it procedure? I might have had one of my references called, but he can't seem to remember who it was and what for..ehh.

Hi everyone.

So I just scheduled my interview for August 11th and I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight as what to expect. I'm sure I'll get the "why do you want to be a nurse" but did they ask any questions that caught you off guard or you weren't prepared for? Any help would be wonderful...I'm so nervous! Thanks!

I just finished my interview!! OMG!

I was very nervous, but the interviewer lady was very nice. =)

The lady said that they will notify the decision in the middle of September.

Now waiting game begins! Good luck to everyone!

Congratulations on your interview! I am finishing up my first semester in the program right now.

Best wishes

Thanks, Malapata!

If you don't mind would you share your first semester experience?

I haven't visited the school yet, and don't know anyone who attended.

Any info will be appreciated!!

NycClara: My references have not been called, but I'm sure if they called yours, you are a step closer to getting into the program! =) I'll keep you updated if I hear anything.

KCon: they did not ask any questions that caught me off guard. they will ask about you and it's very relaxed. sorry if that doesnt help out but good luck on your interview!

glassprn: congrats on your interview! the waiting game is tough...but lets hope we all get through!

Just popping in to say hi. I had my interview 8/3. It went very well I think; it was much more conversational than one would expect. 225 applications and ~ 56 will get in. They've moved from 2 cohorts a year to 3. I was told we should hear back as early as late August, and as late as Early October. Good luck to everyone though. Hopefully I'll get to be in the Jan 2011 cohort.

Thanks, Malapata!

Hi glassprn, I have enjoyed this first semester in the program. I have a great clinical instructor and have been put on a floor these past three weeks that I think offers a lot of opportunity for learning.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about the program or my experience. I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Are you applying for May 2011 admission? Good luck with everything!

Hey, Malapata! Thanks for your kindness.

I'm wondering what if the program cuts too many things since it is just 12-month program. How do you feel about work-load and learning curve?

I know it's a great program but I just want to know the opinion from different perspectives. =)

Thanks in advance.

glassprn, It's hard for me to say whether or not this program cuts things out because I don't know enough about any other programs that I could to compare it to. It's true that it's a 12-month program, which means it's very fast paced. For that reason, you may feel that you don't get a lot of time to learn certain skills. You are shown how to do things in lab but the real time for you to practice comes during your clinicals. This can be kind of scary, but in a way, I think it's kind of a good technique. I like to think of it as "immersion". haha! In the end, you do get the time to practice your skills on real patients, and you get more comfortable as time goes on. I think I will feel as prepared as a student from a more traditional program might feel when I graduate next May.

The work load was especially heavy during the beginning of the first semester because of our demanding Pathophysiology class. Once that class ended, it seemed somewhat more manageable (or maybe I just got used to it! :uhoh3:). I hear that the fall and spring semesters are more intense. I think this is because we have to prepare more for clinicals.

I have heard through the grapevine that some students were not happy with their clinical instructor and that definitely effected their experience this semester. I'm fortunate to say that my instructor was great, and I know of other students who felt the same about theirs. The faculty, overall, are very good, caring and nurturing.

As far as the learning curve- do you mean, do I feel that I'm learning? Or are you wondering about what I think about my fellow classmates? I do feel like we have learned a lot since May. It's kinda crazy when you think about it. And the cohort is a really great mix. There are a lot of people who come from medical backgrounds, and many who do not. I think that helps with the learning process.

I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me with any other questions and best of luck no matter where you end up!
