University of Rochester ABPNN Fall 2012

Published

Hello Everybody:

I decided to make this new thread for the students that are applying to the ABPNN (University of Rochester) for the fall 2012. I have been reading other posts from previous cohorts, but haven't found anyone for the fall 2012 cohort. I sent my application a few days ago, so now I'm in the WAITING process. Does anyone know how long is going to take them to have the final results? Any comments will be appreciated and will help us to stay on top of the GAME!! Good luck to all of you!!

There are tons of factors that play into admissions besides GPA. All you can do is apply to a variety of schools and hopefully you have A's in your pre recs. Don't be blue!

^I do hope so. The courses I took for my major were above the nursing level and kind of like a pre-med route..I had no choice but to take them..do hope they consider that..it was a very intense major (tests every 1-2 weeks, loadfull of coursework material you need to keep on top of), but I survived it and if I can survive that for sure I can survive nursing school.

I know what u are saying about the intensity, Im finishing my bachelors in biology this summer, just before starting the nursing program. So far from what Ive seen, biology is one of the most intense majors and a lot of universities make it even harder cause a lot of the studing are in the medical route!. try to have as much experince as u can get and be prepare for the interview!, I think thats the most important part of the entire application!

I pray it pays off. The classes were such a killer! I have over 1000+ hours working as a volunteer med assistant in various offices. I am a certified CNA. I have shadowed PA's and docs since my original plan was more medical, but I'm switching to nursing now. In a way I'm thankful I had done biology because it made me aware how tough these healthcare programs are by making me go through it, so I know what to expect, rather than choosing an easy route. I hope it pays off!

I'd be careful assuming that bio classes are "above" the nursing level. It is that type of mentality that makes people look down on the nursing profession. I was not a bio major but took bio 1/2, chem 1, orgo 1, and biochem and yes they require more memorization then say my art history classes, but my A&P, micro and nutrition classes also had labs and stemmed off of those "pre-med" classes. Nursing is a different way of thinking and the applicants who are applying to nursing school these days are not strictly women who are debating between elementary education and nursing, all the while hoping to get married off. Former engineers, scientist's, teachers, artists etc are changing professions to become nurses not because they can't be a Doctor, but because they don't want to. Granted even two years ago it was "easier" to get into nursing school but times have changed and I think for the better. My point is not to diminish the work you put into your undergrad, but moreover to open your eyes to your future co-workers and nurses. The average GPA of all the schools I've looked at, private and public are 3.6+ and a majority of those students are former science majors. Different schools focus on different things and your experience speaks volumes. Again, sorry to be matter of fact-I simply take a lot of pride in becoming a nurse, and eventually a Nurse Practitioner and feel that if we nurses don't value what we're doing above all, the public and our co-workers most definitely will not (and this is coming from someone who's fiancé is a Surgical resident who for an entire year pressured me to go to medical school bc he thought that if I had the class work and grades for medical school why wouldnt I go?!)

do accepted students have an interest in starting a facebook page for our cohort (or is one started already)? i saw on facebook that past cohorts have done this and other schools i have been accepted to have done the same.

I got accepted as well :) I finally got my packet today...do we have student id numbers yet? I know we need that to complete a few of the items on our checklist, I guess I can give them a call tomorrow

I think the FB group idea is great! I'm really interested in trying to figure out the housing situation as soon as possible.

Well I never said or intended to make as if nursing is a useless profession..it's a very strong and rewarding profession of course..then why are there so many applicants if it's looked down upon? Any job in the healthcare field is rewarding to have, no matter what it is. I chose med first and was forced to do biology. But I'm switching plans as nursing is more appealing now. However what makes me fear is that this an accelerated program and they accept a bachelor's from any field, and seek ppl with only the best gpa's regardless. Of course you have to take the usual Anatomy and Physiology, nutrition and any other pre-req needed, but you are not taking these courses consistently, know what I mean? For any science major, you're booked with science courses semester after semester and it's incredibly hard and can bring you down. People tell me there are easier majors like psychology and sociology..which seems believable because in my graduating class all those top students with 3.7's+ where all psychology majors. Nursing school ain't easy...no doubt, but I felt getting through a very challenging major is a very good preparation for what lies ahead and that the admissions committee won't even consider this. Everyone's dreams are their dreams, they can achieve it with whatever they have..but sometimes the fear is the massive competition.

ear7?
