Sorta surprised that there is no post for this current application for Pitt, especially since the application deadline is a month away. Decided to make this thread for people looking to discuss the application process.
Anyone applying to Pitt? I made a last minute decision to apply just a few days ago, so I'm trying to get all of my things in order to submit on time, haha.

You may begin your studies on a part-time basis with full graduate status, changing to full-time in the Spring Term, 2023. Questions relating to your program of study and registration should be discussed with your faculty advisor, O'Donnell, John ([email protected]). Please visit the New Student Guide for newly admitted students from the University of Pittsburgh's Office of the Registrar, and the resources for students link for important information to guide you through the admission process.
So is this just a normal full time role? Because it says full time in Spring of 2023. The part time stuff was confusing to me.
I was accepted full-time and got the same email. This is basically saying you can take a course or two in Fall 2022 if you want or get a head start. You’d be PT for Fall 2022 and be FT in Spring 2023 when you start the program. If you want to take courses PT in fall, coordinate with your advisor and email the contact that’s listed later in the email.
Okay my email was not exactly the same. Mine has the provisional graduate student clause in it.

my provision is 12 credit hours. The way it’s worded I would have to take a full 12 hours this fall in order to be full time next Spring. At least that is my interpretation.
guess I’ll be calling tomorrow to find out the details
I just don’t think I have the time to stop everything I’m doing to take a full load right this moment. Might have been easier if this was conveyed sooner.

”A student admitted with Provisional Status must achieve and maintain a Quality Point Average (QPA) of 3.0 or above in courses required for the degree in order to be eligible for Full Graduate status by the completion of twelve credits, the equivalent of one full term.”
did anyone else get this?
this doesn’t seem like the original part time status they were talking about. Just confused. I got accepted into another program full time so probably not willing to risk that for this.
This is the PT offer. You can take courses if you want, and if you do, make sure you get a B or higher. Since the cohort starts Spring, if you want to take Fall 2022 courses you’d need to be admitted into the school as a PT student. Then in Spring, you’ll be FT status (meaning you can take more courses, but that doesn’t mean you’re in the cohort). You can take courses up until you start the Spring 2024 cohort.
I wouldn’t get too caught up on the verbiage and the appointment of statuses as that’s mostly an administration thing. It’s the same as they explained it.

Does anyone know if the ‘provisional’ people HAVE to take any credits (or 12?) in the fall? I’m more than grateful to have been accepted, but I also was not prepared or anticipating taking classes before the classes. I guess I should also reach out for further clarification tomorrow.

No, you don’t have to take any courses if you don’t want to. Graduate FT status is 9 units. Most of the semesters are less than 12 units anyway. I think that saying that by the time you hit 12 units you need to have a 3.0.
I think the verbiage is freaking a lot of people out, but it’s literally no different than what was explained to you: if you’re admitted PT, you can take courses if you want to up until you start the Spring 2024 cohort. If you’re admitted FT, you can take courses in Fall 2022 and you’ll start in the Spring 2023 cohort.

That’s so confusing! When I was called for a part time spot I was told I could start part time and then have a guaranteed “full time” spot in the program starting Spring 2024. I would reach out for sure.
