Hi All,
I'm new to this site and to the field of nursing. Has anyone gone to this school and if so, what did you think?
I live in San Diego, CA, and there is an online program that this school offers. I'm 3 prerequisites away from applying to the school, with a start date of August 08. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, I'm also applying for Summer 09. I just finished my application a few days ago, and am now anxiously crossing my fingers and hoping that I get in. I am really hoping that I have better chances due to the summer start date! Does anyone know when we will be notified of acceptance or denial?
Thanks!
Thanks deevee, even though it is a long time, it helps to know that our wait will be over in 8 weeks. I'm applying for the San Diego location. I was tempted to apply to the Glendale location to get an extra chance to get in, but my husband has a great job here, so that wouldn't have worked out. Good luck to you and I hope you are accepted!
For those currently in the program, would you mind telling us applicants statistics about your classmates? Are there younger students in the program or a mix? Is everyone moving on to a new semester or are some having trouble with the work? Is everyone enjoying the program? Were any of the students working in the medical field prior to this program? I'm just curious.. thanks!!!

I asked how long decisions take and they said it is up to the admissions people. she told me that since i have some courses in progress they will either make my admission decision pending what i have left or they will wait until all my final grades are in, which will definitely be 8 weeks! I am a nervous wreck, but i figure it will all be worth it if/when i get in! good luck everyone!
I totally missed the summer deadline, I dont think Fall will be too bad considering I'll have time to actually study for my finals and it turns out I would of had jury duty on my first week if I started during this summer. I hope it's not too impacted, I'm just really excited to start now, anyone looking for another OU-SD roomie, let me know and we'll study together. Good luck everyone!
Deevee,
I called the office, and they said they received 116 applications (for the San Diego site) and will accept anywhere between 75-80 depending on how many applicants qualified. It almost sounded like many of the student that won't be accepted are because they are not qualified (i.e., finished all pre-reqs, met min. gpa, etc). Which, I hope that's true, for my case at least. However, I know they also encouraged students to apply even though they did not have pre-req's finished yet, and I know they'll accept students who are just now finishing pre-reqs.
I'm hoping they'll accept most people who met the min gpa requirement. I finished all of my pre-reqs already, but my gpa is low. I estimated it at 3.3 for both sciences and last 60 units. My nursing pre-req gpa (including the sciences) was very close to 4.0, but I failed chemistry when I first took it during my first degree, and that killed my science gpa (really annoying that they average all grades for a single class, haha, oh well).

I'm sorry that you missed the Summer deadline, but I wish you good luck for the Fall! This just gives you more time to save for school, and find a roomie.
Hi Amanda,
I wonder how many people will actually apply if they did not meet the GPA requirements or pre-req requirements. I actually have pre-reqs in progress also but will finish before the program starts. I hope that doesn't hurt my application! Their GPA requirement is only 2.5, so as long as you have a GPA over that, you're qualified. I hope we hear of the acceptances soon! There weren't that many applicants for Summer.. there are usually hundreds of applicants for fall!!! Good luck!
Deevee,
I would love to know how many, if any, people applied that did not meet the requirements. I don't think having your pre-reqs in progress will hurt your chances of getting in, since they did keep sending out e-mails asking people to apply even if they still had pre-reqs in progress. Thanks and good luck!

Hi Deevee,
I am in first semester right now and there is quite a mix of people. From just graduated college to people have worked in a completely different fields and are now looking for a career change. Some of us do have medical backgrounds, I was a medical assistant so I feel that helps with terminology and equipment but I wouldn't worry about if you have a different background. We have Moms and Dads in our cohort. It is definitely a mix of people from all different backgrounds.
I do want to give you new applicants some more insight to this program that I didn't have so hopefully this will help in your decision in this program. I know I am not the only one in my cohort who feels this way...
In order for you to really learn in this program, you need to seek out your opportunities to learn wherever you can. What I mean is that I feel that I teach myself nursing most of the time. We get assigned readings on all these nursing skills but don't practice them in lab the next day. We may do them or few weeks later or just talk about it. So what happens is you learn/practice on any willing subject you can before you go to your hospital clinicals. I just feel frustrated that there isn't enough time for an instructor to really give you feedback. I would have liked to have spent more time practicing vitals in lab. I do have a great clinical instructor at the hospital who has shown us things on the floor as the situation arises so I am thankful for that. Other students are not as lucky. Most of my learning has come from the floor. There are some nurses that are really receptive to students and take us under our wings and I really appreciate that.
If you like the lecture setting with lots of discussions about the topics you read, this is not the right program for you. After the first couple weeks, you are on your own and will come to campus for just the labs, then you do your clinicals at the hospital. Please don't misinterpret this in me saying that the instructors cannot be contacted because there are discussion boards, office hours and email. It's just different from the classroom setting, afterall this is online.
I hope this helps...these were just things I had to vent about. I will still continue the program because this is what I want to do and I don't want to go back to being an M.A. I have accepted the fact that I am on my own somewhat and that I am paying a lot of money for it.

i am a first semester student right now. i think you have made a good choice. the first semester, they say, is the easiest and taking it in the shorter semester, summer, will probably help you long term. this way, youwon't have any of the difficult semesters - 2 and 3- in a summer session.
good luck to you. i hope you get in!
