University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and to the field of nursing. Has anyone gone to this school and if so, what did you think?

I live in San Diego, CA, and there is an online program that this school offers. I'm 3 prerequisites away from applying to the school, with a start date of August 08. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's good to know. I'm glad we won't have to be hauling them out of SDSU this week!

What's the news on the scrubs, shoes, etc. that we ordered at the last orientation? When can we get those?

I asked about that too. She also said that she doesn't know about them, but I could call Ace Uniforms. I might call them tomorrow, but I figured we'll find something out at the orientation.

Hi All,

I finished reading the whole forum to catch up. I am currently looking to apply by the June 1 deadline for the August cohort for San Diego. I am going to a meeting on the 14th at 5 to get more information. Other than unofficial transcripts should I know anything else. I called UO today about putting in my application early even though they say that you can't until prereqs are complete but reading the posts here says otherwise. I am currently going to finish my physio and nutrition and hopefully that is all I need. This has been a great wealth of information and thanks so much for those who keep posting what you have been going through as you complete your semesters. I was wondering if they recommend that you don't work and some of you do, does anyone get paid as an student extern? SDSU I think some of them got paid as externs, I know my cousin he just finished at SWC this may and works for Kaiser and he told me they paid him during his externship!

I picked mine up at their store downtown, but they are bringing them to orientation -- on the 8th I think. I just couldn't wait to try them on! :yeah:

I am also applying for August cohort....I still have 3 classes left...so we can keep in touch

Sounds great laura06baby! what 3 classes do you have left. If i calculated correctly on my transcrips I'm hoping that I only need the Physiology and Nutrition. Did you already go to an informal meeting with them. I am scheduled to meet with them on the 14th at 5pm to listen about the program and give them my transcripts to advise me on what is left for me to take.

I still have A&PII, Micro and English...I had a phone interview with them and I faxed them my transcript...where are you going to take these classes? I am taking them online!

I am taking them at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. One is online the nutrition and the Physiology Class is on Sat/Sun. I am on waitlist for both but since I am number 2 on each I will probably get in. I was told to bring my transcripts on the 14th and they will go over them and call me in 2 business days to tell me what progress I need to make. Maybe I should fax them and see if someone is willing to look at it now before the semester starts to see if I need one more classe! That is a heavy load...3 science classes and English, boy you have a lot of writing and memorization to do! Currently I divide my time between Temecula and San Diego since the fiance lives up there so I am hoping that when this is all set and done I can move up there permanently since they will be opening a much needed hospital in temecula and they just added kaiser in the nearby area unless I can convince him to move back here in SD :wink2:

I actually have 2 science classes A&P is one class...but still a lot. I would fax them the transcript...you are right ...if you do have to take another class you need to know now. I live around Poway area....I moved here last year from NY

I am in the OU program and will graduate! However, it is a strictly online program...you will have no instructors! Imagine learning nursing by yourself...getting a quick degree is really not the way to go. Try looking into other accelerated BSN programs in the San Diego area that actually have instructors and classroom time. CSU San Marcos and Azusa Pacific University. The morale among University Oklahoma students in San Diego is extremely low and most of us are just looking forward to being done with it! Please be careful when choosing this program...it is definitely flawed and just started Fall 2007 and still trying to administratively iron out kinks. Your course instructors are all from OKLAHOMA and you have only email interaction from them. Yes, you do have real nurses in San Diego that you get for clinicals but that's not where the testing comes from...BEWARE!!! Nursing is too important to rush through an online program. I will however feel confident in passing the NCLEX but wish that I had done a traditional BSN program =) Also, the program has lost it's stay at Sharp Cabrillo so we do not know where we will be anymore...no physical school and no instructors...GREAT! What else will they throw at us...it's borderline unethical. Good luck everyone!

Thank you BSNworking on it. The thing with traditional is that at SDSU the impact was really hard to beat. The original 50 slots wasn't enough for the 600 that were applying and the fact that they got grants to open another 45 didn't help. The 100 that graduated per year wasn't enought to make a dent letting others in the program. I know of many of my previous classmates who finally got in after waiting for 3 years and some left because they would never get in. As for the CSU Marcos the only reason why I wasn't considering it is that it too is a new program and their are instructors. It is also 18 months long and you are required to take other unneccesary classes such as a manadatory 201 series in language for all graduates at CSU, I don't want to waste time and money. I would like to learn the hands on portion but my friend who went through SDSU says it was the same you had lectures and then you had clinicals most was self taught through long sessions of studying with your partner. Other than USD (That place will cost you double than this program) who has the other Accelerated program CSU San Marcos would be easier, I'm still looking into my options. I am going to listen to the informational meeting on the 14th and then also look at CSU. Problems is they require that you pay $50 just to look at transcripts and then take all your classes and then apply and then wait to see...it feels like SDSU all over again. Unless I want to go National University which is also a grip and longer program. I would love to hear from more current students if this route is a route you regret taking because of the disorganization and the lack of onsite faculty and testing procedures or do you agree that this is a good solution to the impacted problem we have for nursing in san diego. When I was at SDSU either I stayed and waited to get in or I got a degree in another field and hoped that accelerated programs would pick up soon for us 2nd degree earners!

Jens619 - I know frustrating! And yes, I think the accelerated OU BSN program in San Diego is geared towards bridging the gap to get nurses through quicker. But, my gosh it's not quality education...not yet anyways. So, just hang in there! From what I have been hearing even National University has a solid program for just a couple thousand more than the OU program...
