Hi everyone!!! I am new to allnurses.com - I was wondering if anyone has applied for the Fall 2009 accelerated program? I have not been able to attend an information session due to scheduling conflicts. Does anyone know how many people apply to the program or know any "insider" info? I know that 50 people get in every year - I just submited my application last week for the early response deadline - good luck to all!!
I didn't get that email but also had a questionable class that I knew they "might" ask about eventually... I couldn't get the actual syllabus from when I was in class, but was able to get one from a couple semesters ago and the instructor mentioned in the email that they still use the same book, just an updated version, and that it's accepted to most medical schools, etc... I kept the email along with the syllabus.
If your instructors don't work for the school, then you can probably get a syllabus from whoever is currently teaching the class and contact the department and see what kind of info they have on requirements for that course to be taught - they should be able to tell you about the class now vs then and that syllabus, along with some kind of written statement from the college/department should suffice. There's usually one or two key components they are looking for in equivalent classes. find out what that is and prove you learned it.
Hope that helps!
Yes, I got an email too. I guess I was hoping it was a good sign that they're willing to take time to look at me. Otherwise, why waste their time if they're not even considering me?
I'm still hoping for the best. Mine was an english class I took while I was dual enrolled during high school and another was my tier 2 writing requirement from undergrad.
Here's to wishing and hoping....and pleading and begging! lol U of M is really my top choice and I REALLY want to get in there.
Wow-I just got an email asking for CD's and syllabi for TEN classes. Two of which I already sent with my application anticipating questions. Do they really need a syllabus for English 101? I got a 5 on the GRE writing. I can write. Geez. I took that in high school and it didn't even have a syllabus. On top of that, she requested it by Tuesday! What did you guys do? Did you get all the materials together in time? Maybe this is just a test of our will... It sure does suck. I've been on google for the past 2 hours trying to find e-mail addresses, course catalogs, etc. for all the many schools I've attended.
Yikes! That beats me! I only had to round them up for NINE. I, too, was given only a few days to do it. I got the email on a Wednesday and had to send them by the following Monday.
5 of the classes that they requested were prerequisites that I took within the last year at community colleges. So, that was easy because I still had all that stuff.
4 of the classes were from my undergrad degree (2001-2005) so, those were significantly harder. My college had all of the course bulletins archived online so, I managed to dig-up the course descriptions. One syllabus I happened to find online just from googling. The instructor had it up on her website since Spring 2002!! Isn't that crazy?
For the other three syllabi, I just started calling departments and emailing my old professors. For two of them, the department had them in their records and just emailed them to me. I couldn't track down the third syllabus for the exact term that I took the course (Winter 2002). However, my instructor still teaches it every year and he sent me the current version of the syllabus with a quick note that said the content of the course has not changed at all since I took it with him 8 years ago.
Oh- One important thing to note- For the social science requirement, I ended up changing the courses that I used as prereqs to make it easier to find the syllabi. When I applied, I put down two random Anthro courses because I just wanted to use classes that I had received A's in. However, Anthro changes their offerings every year and I figured it would be impossible to find those syllabi and hard for UMich to figure out how to transfer them in. So, instead, I asked if I could use two classes that I took from my undergrad's Economics core. Those classes are the same year after year so, I knew it would be easier to find the syllabi. Plus, since they're just part of the core, I knew that UMich should have similar courses that those classes could transfer in as.
Oh, yeah-- One other tip-- I spoke with a lady at Admissions and she advised me to look at their school of humanities and social sciences (I forget the exact name) website. On that website, you can find a full transfer guide for every state that shows what classes are acceptable to transfer into their school. You can look up the colleges that you have attended and see if you took any courses that have already been approved for transfer (in other words, someone else has already transferred to UMich and used those courses). If you've taken any classes on those list, you can try to use them as prereqs instead and that would make the course transfer process a little smoother. It turned out that one of my Econ core courses was on that list so, I could feel more confident that it would be approved for transfer. I hope I'm making sense here.
Good luck, Sara!!
I'm taking my last 4 pre-reqs this semester, but I doubt they are waiting for me to finish them before making a decision. I got all A's in the other pre-reqs, so obviously they can predict that I would do equally well this semester
Interesting--do most people who have not heard not have all pre-req's done. I still had 3 when I was waitlisted. I am at WCC this semester too--have Organic BioChem there.

I didn't get an email but I printed out and stapled syllabi from questionable courses to my course list. I also added a statement that I would take any unmet prereqs over the summer at UM if they didn't approve any of mine. But they probably haven't even looked at my stuff yet. I just finished applying two weeks ago. Good luck guys! :-)
