Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey all, I've been waiting to see a UM ABSN 2018 thread pop up but figured I might as well start one. I submitted my application on March 17 and still waiting for NursingCAS to verify my transcripts. From what I've gathered through past threads, its a rolling admission so I'm hoping to hear back in the next few months! Curious if there's anybody else out there who has applied or planning on applying!

Check your spam? Or give them a call Monday. Everybody I've spoken to in that office has been super nice and really helpful.

I just submitted my deposit :)

I also received the email from UM's Admissions Committee! But I never got an email with my Canelink. Did I do something wrong?! Helpppp haha

Hello Group !

Glad to meet all of you that will get accepted. I myself was accepted a few days ago. Now, need to send deposits and do the other pre-orientation requirements. Does anyone have a guideline as per how a typical weekly schedule will be ?

Thanks !

Voltaire

Hello all!

I'm so glad I found this thread. UM received my application on Apr 19. Three weeks later I received my admissions offer via email. Based on some other threads I've read and my own personal experience, it seems the average turn around time for decisions is about one month. This is pretty fast compared to some other schools I applied to. If you've been waiting for more than a month, I suggest contacting the school to get an update on your application. Anyhoo, I submitted my deposit last week. Now I'm just waiting for the school to send me details on orientation. In the meantime, I need to look into housing options. I'm leaning towards living off campus. If anyone is looking for a roommate hit me up!

Go Canes!

@Voltaire11 and @wangja80 welcome and congrats on getting accepted as well!

I don't know what a typical week schedule would be like, but that would be something worth knowing! It may behoove you to reach out to someone on a past thread to see if they can offer any insight. If I recall correctly, I saw on past threads something like a Monday - Saturday school and clinicals schedule, but can't be sure.

Are either of you from Florida, or will you be moving? I'm looking for a place off campus because I'm coming from Dallas TX with a large dog. Have either of you received financial aid info? How are you guys planning on financing tuition?

I'm about half way through the compliance checklist, I'm getting the first set of fingerprints on Monday. :)

Hello Ms. Sierra,

Thank you for creating this thread.

I myself have lived in Miami most of life. I am a returning UM alumni. From reading previous thread seems that most students are out of State -- quite surprising if you ask me. I think it's great !

Will start the compliance checklist next week and apply for Financial Aid early -- hopefully everything will be fine.

Wishing all of you a successful completion on the compliance list and meet all of you in Orientation.

Hi guys,

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm moving from Los Angeles and will be looking for off campus housing for sure.

I have not received any financial aid info from UM yet. I did apply for FAFSA back in February for the 2017 academic year, but I'm guessing I will need to apply again since our program starts in 2018. I plan to confirm this with the financial aid office ASAP.

Did anyone get details on orientation yet? If anyone knows the exact date of orientation please let us know!

No orientation details yet, but I do know it is mandatory. I think we won't be notified about that until much much later. Last I spoke with the UM Nursing office, I was told I'm "way ahead of the game" and they're still situating the students who just started classes in May.

I just got off the phone with the financial aid office, and basically we won't know anything about financial aid offers until around November. For admitted students to the Accelerated Nursing program, we only have to file a FAFSA. The CSS PROFILE, etc, listed on the financial aid site is not for us to fill out. Once you've filed your FAFSA, just call them to verify they got it.

As someone living out of state, the late financial assistance notification presents a bit of a problem because I was hoping to move to Miami a few months before classes start so I'll get to know the area and also not have to stress about living situations. :dead:

Hope this info helps!

Thanks for sharing the info. Wow, November seems really late to me. I was hoping it would be much sooner than that.

Did you complete your fingerprints already? I just read that the fingerprint screening has to be completed in Florida. Were you allowed to do yours in Dallas? If so did you have to get permission from the school first?

I had to call the service doing the processing to figure that all out (American DataBank 1-800-200-0853). We need to do two sets of fingerprinting: one called AHCA and the other VECHS. The service sent me fingerprint cards in the mail that I was able to complete here in Dallas for the VECHS. But the AHCA must be completed in Florida. UM understands that a lot of people are out of state, they stated "we recommend any non-Florida resident plan to arrive at least 5 business days before the first day of classes to complete their background checks" (http://oss.sonhs.miami.edu/clinical-information/index.html), so around the time we are attending orientation is when we can get it done.

As far as financial aid info: I'm pretty disappointed that, despite being accepted SO early, we're not given a headstart on financing. I've only spoken to the UM financial aid office about this tho. The actual Nursing school may have their own timeline that the financial aid office isn't aware of? Such as releasing scholarships, etc. I feel I should call them as well to verify the November release of FA info.

If anybody gathers additional or different intel on when the Nursing school plans to release FA info, please do share!

Oh, a detail I forgot to mention: the reason given for the late financial assistance is because of credit checks. They check our credit to see what kind of loans they can offer, and the credit score report only lasts 60 days, hence the estimated November date. :wtf:

Hi.

I thought FAFSA was determined by financial need not through a credit score ? Or does UM have other loans they can give ?

From what was explained to me: the FAFSA is need based assistance, so they assess how much you can get based on your past tax filing. And then UM will offer student loans to cover some more of your expenses, your credit score dictating the amount and interest rate. This makes me wonder why/whether scholarship info is also delayed till Nov :cautious:

I'm def going to have to call them this week. I'm feeling stir crazy since I have nothing more to do for them (other than immunizations) and I feel like there's no reason to be looking at housing now since I won't know anything about FA for another ~5 months, and the housing available now may not be available closer to Dec/Jan.

I would definitely check with the FA office for better/clearer info as I only have a superficial understanding of it. As always, share any info you can get :p
