University of Miami Accelerated BSN Fall 2010 start

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I started this thread for those who've been accepted or are waiting to hear about acceptance to the UM's accelerated BSN program that begins Fall 2010. I'm excited to meet my future classmates! :yeah:

What is everyone doing about housing?

Financial aid/loans?

For non-locals: are you planning on visiting?

What is everyone's backgrounds?

It says on the acceptance letter that the class has 650 people in it... but that seems impossible, considering the registration site for the fall caps the classes at 80. So somewhere between 80 and 650? :)

I was thinking maybe the statistics from the acceptance letter was including both accelerated and traditional students for the fall. That would make so much more sense because there is no way just the accelerated class would ever be that big...

Does anyone know where the best places for Housing are? I'm seeing Kendall, Brickell, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. Ideally, I would like to find a place I can live comfortably, and still be able to take the Metrorail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Kendall is boring, suburban and full of bad traffic caused by bad drivers.. The Gables isn't very lively, but it's very safe. I personally just hate Brickell/downtown in general, but a lot of people love it... The Grove is the best area for college students because there's lots to do and it's got a younger vibe. Just make sure you're east of McDonald (32nd Ave) and south of Bird. And see the area in person. Neighborhoods in Miami tend to change from nice to ghetto in half a block.

The accelerated class is between 50 and 90 people (at least that is what I was told by the advisor). The letter refers to the transfer class and does not say anything about the accelerated program.:smokin:

Hey everyone! I've met a few of you on facebook... my Name's Tripper and I just sent in my deposit last week! My wife and I will be moving out at the end of July beginning of Aug, so if any of you know a good spot for family living, I'd appreciate the info.

As far as $$ for school... Is anyone considering any of the military avenues? I know the Navy and National guard have some good options for "after the fact" (once you have your RN-BSN), anyone have insight to options that help out up front (apart from the sponsorships)?

Holly (my wife) and I love having people over and I fancy myself an okay cook, so I look forward to having some of y'all over and getting to know you and most likely studying (we'll probably be doing a lot of that next year, huh?:)).

See y'all soon!

Anyone accepted here worried about how condensed and acclerated the program is? Most are longer, 18-20 months. Have you heard if you can learn all the information successfully and how many clinical hous you end up with? Thanks..

congratulations future um nursing students!

a former student here (about to graduate in this may) from the absn program as well....

just wanted to see if anyone is interested in purchasing 3 sets of um hunter green uniform scrub sets:

  • 3 scrub tops (u logo) size xs
  • 3 scrub pants (plain) size xs
  • plus:
  • 2 scrub jackets (u logo) size s (gelscrubs does not make them in xs, unfortunately, but the jackets really came in handy since some clinical sites are freezing all the time!)

if you order from gelscrubs directly with student pricing, tops w/logo are $14.50 each, pants w/out logo are $18.00 each, and jackets w/logo are $18.00 each. i paid $133.50 total (not including shipping). i am offering at 50% off this total...via cash or paypal (i can mail them to you if you are not local)

i would like to add that these are in excellent shape, washed in woolite only (i was trying to prevent as much fading as possible, and having that extra set helped as well). no tears, no stains, no alterations. since i was in absn program, these didn't get as much use as i'd expected! (you will wear them typically 2xs per week, which will give you extra to spare)

please send me a private message if you are interested....

ps. if you need other sizes, let me know and i can ask my other classmates to contact you.

thanks, and good luck! :)

kim

Hi I don't know how to do a private message..ha but I do want to know what you thought of the program? I need to decide in the next few days if i should attend that one or one that is a little longer in another state. ( 20 months). I am concerned about the intensity of the program? How many clinical hours do you get per week/ semester and end up with when finished? Is is enough time to absorb all the info?. I am graduating in a few weeks from a great University, but never took 21 credits at one time ( 15 max). I have asked the advisor there and she didn';t know how many clinical hours you get?? Thanks so much. I am stressed about the decision. The other school isn't as well known, but the pace seems more appealing. You can post or send me a private response. THANKS

Hello future UM accelerated students. I'm graduating with Kim in May. The road ahead is tough, but if you set your mind to it you can do it. Plan on studying every minute, but it's possible. I also have some scrubs, size large. I have 3 sets and 1 jacket. I'll sell everything for $30 total if you are interested. Let me know and good luck in nursing school! :)

Hi I am trying to decide if I should attend there or another school that is a 2 yr BSN. Now that you are done, do you think it was too intense? Do you think a slower pace would be better to absorb all the information? Did people drop out or not do well ? Please let me know your honest opinion. I need to send my deposit this week. I've ben told by some nurses that a 12 month program seems too rushed, but since you just did it you can let me know how you and the others seemed to do. Thanks

kinberly*Pink or JesLeigh- Now that you are almost done do you think it was too intense? Non stop everyday work? Did you have time for any social life? Weekend at the beach? or pretty much just all the program? Still trying to decide if I can handle the stress or do a 2 yr. program. Any comments? Thanks
