University of Miami Accelerated BSN Fall 2010 start

Published

I started this thread for those who've been accepted or are waiting to hear about acceptance to the UM's Accelerated BSN program that begins Fall 2010. I'm excited to meet my future classmates! :yeah:

What is everyone doing about housing?

Financial aid/loans?

For non-locals: are you planning on visiting?

What is everyone's backgrounds?

The program is tough, I'm not gonna lie. I'm glad I did it in one year though. First semester and third semester are rough and you won't have time for a social life. I didn't at least. But, second semester isn't bad and that helps to break it up a bit. You just have to decide if you want to work really hard and finish it in one year, or if you would rather a slower pace like a 2 year program. You have to go into it 100% dedicated if you do the accelerated program. And plan to study a lot! But, it is very rewarding to accomplish something like this. I kind of feel like I can handle anything that comes my way now...lol. Good luck with whatever you decide :)

Haha no social life! Weekend at the beach? Not me, but I was too high-strung for the most part. Some students felt comfortable going out but not me, I just couldn't relax. Even now, when we have 3 HESI's left for the next two weeks, I still don't wanna do anything till it's all over. Also, I'm a commuter so an hour (and a half, if traffic) driving each way took a lot of my free study time. Plus I had to get up a bit earlier than most, especially for clinicals.

BUT...

I will say that I would take getting this out of the way in 12 months over any other 17-24 month program. For some people they would rather pace themselves, but I couldn't imagine. I am so glad I am almost done!

Like JesLeigh said, it's doable, and it's a lot; some of it depends on your ability to study on your own time. Some are good at test taking and critical thinking skills, some are not. It took me a while to get the hang of taking "nursing" type exams. I really can't make a decision for any of you guys wanting to know whether you want to do the program or not. But remember, you already have a degree and you know what college is like already, so you will do fine. Keep reading along with what you are learning in class using NCLEX review books, Med Surg and Fundamentals success books, doing questions that go along with the chapter you are learning so you have an idea of how the tests are.

I kept feeling like I was so behind during the program, but now, looking back, I really have learned a lot along the way. It seemed like it was taking forever but now the end creeped up on me...I can't believe I'm almost done. It's definitely a really good feeling! :p

Oh and I heard a few break ups and relationship problems happened many times over the semesters .... I had a fair share of complaints from my significant other (and getting mad at him for complaining!) If you have a busy household, plan to find a place and time to do your studying, get some EARPLUGS, they work wonders! Lots of caffeine. Don't put anything off either, get it done as soon as you hear about the assignment being posted or whatever, because doing it the night before is no fun especially when you have a test the next day as well. Dont plan on studying for an exam the night before. Do a little at a time.

(and JesLeigh is right about the 1st and 3rd are the worst, the second is breathing time semester, somewhat).

And most importantly, breathe, don't freak out, you can do it! I don't want to make it sound like "hell" (at times you might feel that way), but at the end, it will be well worth it!

Thank you for your input. I am just graduating college in a few weeks. Can't decide if I want such stress for the year or not. Being done is tempting, but I usually like to have a balance in life..ha I am single, no family to take care of while doing the program.(I will be leaving my boyfriend to do this.) Actually can you tell me the general make up of the students? How many new grads like me, versus slightly older people making career changes? Is everyone doing ok with grades? Also can you tell me how many times a week and for how long each day the clinicals are?? I called a few times and no one seems to be able to tell me? the advisors haven't called me back. Are the Professors helpful when you are "drowning"? You did get a few weeks off for winter and sprring break? Thanks again for the input it's SO helpful!!

The students in the program are a variety of ages. There are some new grads in our program and there are people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, and a few in there 50's. It's really not about how old you are, you just have to be 100% dedicated and up for the challenge. Everyone in our class is really smart, so I think most people are doing okay. The school requires a minimum of a 75% in each class in order to pass. We have had people fail out over the course of the program though. The professors will meet with you and I think most do understand the stress of our program. However, if you don't make a 74.5 then most of them will not show mercy and boost your grade. So, it all really boils back down to how hard you are willing to work. If you can't live without a social life, then this route may not be for you. But, only you can make that decision. On an up note, they do give you a month off for Christmas...maybe even a few days longer. It is really nice. But, other holidays during the program, plan on studying while enjoying them. I think we had like 2 tests the week after Thanksgiving if I recall. As Kim said, Med Surg Success and the other Success books are really great. And don't put off assignments b/c they will pile up quickly and that is overwhelming. I recommend living close to campus to cut down on commuting time. Most clinicals require you be at the hospital by 6:30am. I know people that commute get minimal sleep. If you really want this, I have no doubt you can do it! You will make some great friends along the way and learn a lot!

I'm a hopeful 2011 student and I would like to thank those who have gone before me for their advice. I'm eating it up. Keep it coming. What were the acceptance grades like? Is everyone from private schools? Is there an element of comraderie? Have you had any luck with the "available scholarships?". Thank you so much. Nick from

Connecticut.

I have a 3.8 overall and a 4.0 in my science pre-reqs. I went to a private school as an undergrad and am doing my pre-reqs at a public school. I didn't get my acceptance letter until after it was too late to apply for the scholarship. Since they didn't offer me a good enough package to cover tuition/cost of living, I paid my deposit and deferred admission for a year so I can apply for the scholarship/see if I get into FAU or USF and pay a tenth of the cost. Make sure to apply EARLY so you have your admission letter in time to apply for the scholarship. A lot of us had a problem because of the early deadline.

Hi Kimberly,

Im not sure if this is a private message but can u email me at [email protected]. Do u still have your scrubs? And notes?

Thanks

Carmen

I'm still eager to hear from other people headed to UM to begin May 2011. I was accepted yay!

I was accepted for the 2011 accelerated program and I am becoming worried it may be a little too accelerated and I should maybe partake in a 16 month program. It is a big move for me and I am leaving family and loved ones behind. There is a school where I live that is also private and has an accelerated program. It makes me nervous when everyone says how difficult and almost impossible it is. I would also like to enjoy myself a little too and know that I may have some downtime. Thoughts?

I am applying for the University of Miami ABSN 2012 may start. Anyone out there with advise about the program? Or advise about the application process? How many students are accepted? What sort of GPA range? Would love to hear more about the school.
