University of Maryland Traditional BSN Fall Program: Any idea when we will hear back?

Published

I was wondering if there was anyone out there that applied last fall that could tell us when they learned the fate of their application? I was just wondering how long we (Fall 2009 applicants) would have to wait until we hear back from the admissions office. Thanks and good luck to everyone else!

Thank you JRFraker for the feedback about the stimulation labs. I look forward to touring the SG campus soon. One more question if I may, do students at SG campus have clinical rotations in Bmore I would love to experience the Shock Trauma at UMMC center! Thank you in advance :wink2:

That one you are going to have to have someone else answer. Clinicals are based on broad subject matter (Adult Health, Peds, Psych, etc) so I doubt Shock Trauma would be on the menu but again I don't know. Generally speaking though SG students have clinicals in Montgomery County, PG, Frederick, and DC. I am going to Washington Hospital Center for mine starting tomorrow and I understand on our last night we are treated to the ER. In the last group there was someone who passed out from all the 'trauma' (thats the rumor anyway :-).)

Who wouldn't want to go to Shock Trauma? I'd certainly be in my happy place there :p

And while I wouldn't quote me on this, I think I have seen clinicals for some semester at Shock Trauma. I believe it was the second one...they definitely have them at UMMC or at least that's what they tell us at Baltimore. It was written on a piece of paper posted up at the labs so that's what I'm going on. However your first semester you're only getting clinical for the last like third of Fundamentals and its probably going to be at a LTC center.

I never visited Shady Grove so I can't give an opinion on the place but in all honesty Baltimore isn't really that bad guys. You're literally right across the street from UMMC and yes, while everyone freaks out that its Baltimore- the campus has its own police. Its a city guaranteed so things do happen and you don't want to be walking around flinging money on the streets. But don't make a decision to go somewhere else just because you didn't get to go to Shady Grove- the school itself is wonderful and I'm definitely happy where I am.

PS. If someone else who is a student can confirm the Shock Trauma clinical feel free to let me know...sign ups for me are in August so its never to early to start prioritizing

Shock Trauma is available. UMMC clinicals are only available for Bmore students, likewise, WHC is only for SG students (applies to adult health, a bit different for future semesters and senior praticuum). I wanted Shock Trauma but I didn't bother registering for it cause I knew it would have been really hard to get it. SURFs EXTREMELYYYYYYYYYY slow at the point of registration. I kept refreshing and when the time came, the screen took about 2 mins to load and when I put in my CRN#, the page took another 5 mins to load. So pretty much if you tried out for Shock Trauma and you didn't get it.... by that time most of other sites will be taken up... I ended up on Gudelsky 5 (Neuroscience, the first CRN# I tried) and I absolutely love it.

I believe you will get a great experience no matter where you end up for adult. From what I've heard, every instructor seems amazing and most floors get an overflow population from other units, so you'll always be experiencing a diverse population.

I'm not saying don't try for Shock Trauma... it's just my 2 cents. But remember, there are only 7-8 slots per a clinical group. Shock Trauma also ends their clinicals much later cause they started a lot later than most of us.

You are welcome! I truly hope that you will like SG campus and enjoy your time in the program. It's HARD to go through nursing school. There were so many times that I questioned my ability, yet, I pulled it through the 1st semester and I am almost done with my 2nd. You will learn SO much in 2 years.

Regarding to your visit, the weekend is pretty quite around the campus and the faculty will not be there. The campus itself is very small. There are only 3 buildings: building I, II, & III. Bdg I is the main building where you can find the library, cafeteria, computer rooms etc. Most of our lectures are in bdg III. bdg III 3rd floor is where the nursing program office is. You also find the labs at the opposite of the hallway. Walk around the campus, you don't need to be a student to get in.

I would still suggest you to meet the faculty sometime in the weekday if you want to. They are all VERY NICE!!!

If you still have questions, please feel free to ask. I am sure a lot of people on this board will be able to help.

Sorry I made a mistake. Bdg III is the Camille Kendall Academic Center where you can cafeteria, library and such. Bdg I is where you can the nursing office and labs. Sorry for the confusion.

Haha..you are right, we did have a student who passed out but it's not because of the trauma, it's because of something else. Oh..gosh...rumors do pass on very quickly.:chuckle To answer the question about clinicals, no...for SG students, we can only pick clinicals especially for SG students. So as Baltimore students, they can only pick wherever that available for them. I've heard that it is different for senior practicum. I know one senior who goes to UMMC for her senior practicum. Clinical sites of adult health for us this semester are holy cross, montgomery general, frederick, WHC, and suburban. Even though the sites don't sound as interesting as UMMC, I know pretty much everyone in our class got a chance to get off the floor and go to the ER, OR, PPR etc. You will still learn A LOT no matter where you end up.

hope that helps.

Thank you loloterp & JRFraker for your advice! but i dont think I'll be considering another major lol...i do very well in my science & other courses but Chemistry is a course I never cared too much for. I'm not doing too bad in that class but I could do better...I think I'm just nervous w/ the semester winding down & all. Its way better than when I took it in high school lol and Im determined to do my best. Im going to take Micro w/ Lester this summer hopefully!

I know this question is wayyy out there..but i was wondering how your breaks are between semesters. For example, during winter break are we still required to do assignments or study as much. Even though it is always good to read and get a head start on things, i was wondering if i would have time to plan a 2-3 week trip to Nigeria during this winter break w/o any problems conflicting with nursing school?? :[anb]:

You should be able to go on vacation. But getting a headstart on readings is very important too. I don't see why you can't go on vacation over winter break. We had a few students go out of town/country for springbreak and they were able to study for the 2 exams we had upon return from break... so an actual winter break (between fall and spring semesters), I don't see why you would have a problem. Its great that you asked, because planning ahead and time management is a HUGE aspect of making it through nursing school... so you are off to a good start so far!:yeah:

haha, JR, one of our students did become a patient herself while at clinicals at WHC a few weeks ago. Except she didn't completely "pass out" she actually got really pale in the face and had to lay down at the ER for a while.... nothing better than experiencing it all from every point of view.. LOL:chuckle

August is so far away... cant wait to start.

August does seem far away..but I'm enjoying all the free time I can get. I'm even putting in overtime @ hospital so I wont be broke when i go part time @ start of nursing school.
