Hello all and Congratulations on your acceptance!
I just wanted to start a new posting for everyone starting Spring 2011 at UMB/UMB Shady Grove for nursing school, all levels. Please post any questions/information that you wish to share here.
When i received my phone call this morning I was told that we all would be getting our letters and packets of information in the next week or two.
I am very excited to say the least. I am going to get working on getting my vaccine titers and looking into updating my CPR certification to the one needed for school. What all are you doing to get ready?
While we are on the uniform topic, what are you all doing for shoes? I think I read they have to be all white or something. Would these work? http://www.allheart.com/lnenergiz.html
The official uniform calls for white, all-leather, closed-back shoes (no clogs/slip-ons), but at least in Baltimore, if you have already purchased shoes in another color, they will be acceptable. They are fairly lenient about the uniform (especially the shoes), but although even sneakers will be allowed in lab, only appropriate leather shoes with a closed back will be acceptable for clinicals. So if you haven't already bought "nursing shoes," take your time deciding which are the most comfortable and don't rush to order them now. You won't officially need them until clinicals start at the very end of the semester (approximately the last 4 weeks). The most important thing to keep in mind is COMFORT and support. I promise you, after an 8-12 hour shift, your feet will be killing you. So don't skimp on the nursing shoes. Try a lot of different styles and save your pennies for a good quality pair. I ordered several different brands, styles, and sizes from Zappos and Endless, which have free shipping both ways, then Googled for the best prices on the style I decided to keep. Keep looking if anything is rubbing, tight, or just doesn't feel perfect. I know it sounds weird, but trust me, your feet and back will thank you later.

Okat, thank you so much for the advice! I will hold off then for now and just wear my sneakers for lab.
Hey fellow students!
I hope you all are doing well. I have tons of questions! Have u guys bought your books yet? I bought some of mine from amazon. I feel like I am so behind because I haven't started with any of the assigned readings yet. Plus I need to brush up on my anatomy and physiology stuff because I've taken those a while back. Anyway, have any of you gotten your student ID's and/or parking permits? And I also need advise on commuting. I might not have a car on most days and would have to take the bus/train/light rail--I don't know which one yet as I've only been in Maryland for almost a year and am not familiar with taking public transpo since I've driven myself all the time and last fall term I drove to and fro school. Anybody have an idea on how to get to school(bus or marc train?) coming from Laurel? Or is there anybody who lives around the area maybe we can carpool? (Oh btw I will be attending the Baltimore campus)...Please help I'd greatly appreciate it! ^__^
Hi,
Not sure if you got the email yesterday or not but the CNL orientation is 8:30-4:30 the 19th. I am assuming you just walk into the Nursing building and they will tell you where it is located. That is how it worked for the information sessions.
Does anyone know if its ok to just bring copies of your CPR/ transcript to orientation? I thought that is what I read in the admission packet.
See you all soon! We are actually going to be nurses :)
Hi everyone and congrats again!!!
I was wondering what everyone was doing for books for the semester? Renting, buying used or new??? I'm trying to look at all options to find the best choice cost wise...any suggestions are great! (I'm going to be doing the BSN program at Baltimore)
Can't wait to meet everyone at orientation!

I bought all of mine, almost all used. I bought most of them from a current student (a friend) and I bought the rest off of half.com (mostly) and one or two off of Amazon.com

I called today about the CPR card. I was told to mail a copy to:
School of Nursing, Office of Student and Academic Services
655 W. Lombard Street, Suite 102
Baltimore, MD 21201
Anyone know how to sign up for the health insurance plan? The UMB website has a link to Employee Portal - Sign In
, but I wasn't able to log in there.

Hi! From what I have been told and heard is that orientation is mandatory and every effort should be made to attend. As far as scurbs, you have to wear them in lab, so you do need them for this semester. If I were you I would come to orientation if you can find a flight.
