University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB)-Spring 2011

Published

Hello all and Congratulations on your acceptance! :yeah:

I just wanted to start a new posting for everyone starting Spring 2011 at UMB/UMB Shady Grove for nursing school, all levels. Please post any questions/information that you wish to share here.

When i received my phone call this morning I was told that we all would be getting our letters and packets of information in the next week or two.

I am very excited to say the least. I am going to get working on getting my vaccine titers and looking into updating my CPR certification to the one needed for school. What all are you doing to get ready?

Also, has anyone received any information from the school regarding financial aid award?

Does anyone know how to set up their email account yet? My UMB ID is working for everything else, and I can log into the MyUMB Portal (http://myumb.umaryland.edu), but I can't get into either http://sonmail.umaryland.edu OR University of Maryland, Baltimore - Login

SteveC - you should get an email from school for the email address... i received an email this morning telling me I can now set up my email address and it will tell you where to go. I imagine that you should be getting the same email soon too! :)

i posted in the other thread but just to let you guys know book holders is a good place to buy your books. There's one in towson and one in college park. and congrats everyone if you have any questions you can private message me. I just finished my 1st semester at umb.

What do you reccomend for a laptop? I am going to get a new one before the semester, and would really like to get a mac. Is it easier/better to get a dell or other type of PC, or is it okay to use a mac? I was going to wait until orientation to see what they say, but seeing as you have been there for a semester and have seen what everyone has been using, what would you reccommend?

Thanks!!

I have a pc but a lot of other students have macs. So it's really up to you. With either computer you will be able to get all the materials that are online.

When you set up your UMB School of Nursing email account you would be wise to think about your name. You only get one attempt so you cannot change your mind later. An unprofessional name is really off-putting and, unless you are really good about signing your emails, if your name has no relationship to your real name, your email recipient may not know who it is from. Your instructors get LOTS of emails from students - don't make it hard for them to figure out who you are. My preference is for first initial plus last name.

Students with slow computers and slow printers will soon be tearing their hair out. If you use the printers on campus to print out materials, you will have to pay. At Shady Grove, the public copiers can also be used as scanners so that you can email materials yourself and then print out at home or somewhere else for free.

hi to all the fellow spring 2011 nurses! I'm new to the site. was hoping someone could offer some advice about housing. im looking to move to baltimore within the next few weeks before school starts, but really unsure about where is safe, convenient, and most common for other students. anyone know where most of the current students live? congrats to everyone and see you soon. thanks!

What color scrubs do we need to purchase? I've seen on these forums that it is khaki bottoms and white tops, but I am looking at all the information packets we got and they don't specify a color (unless I'm overlooking where it is written). Also, should we get multiple sets of each scrub/lab coat, would 2 be enough?

yes - white tops, kacki bottoms and a whilte lab coat.

i got 4 tops, three bottoms and 2 jackets.

i figure that we will be in our uniforms from 2-3 days a week and i want them clean and things happen when working in lab and with people.

i got mine from allheart.com's clearance page.

Yes, you are correct. The uniform you need to wear for lab and clinicals is a white scrub top and khaki scrub bottoms. They are not particular about which shade of khaki, or which style(s) you choose. You will only need your lab coat if you go to open lab dressed in regular clothes (note that denim is not allowed in open lab). You might do this fairly often since lab (when you need your full uniform) is only one day a week, but I can't think of any reason why you would need more than one.

Hope this helps.

Good luck everyone!

Is anyone in the online RN-BSN program that lives in another state? I called a while ago about if I would need to fly to Maryland for orientation but no one has called me back yet...so I am assuming I don't need to. I was also assuming I would not need to buy uniforms either since I have no clinical the first semester, at least. I am pretty confused and feel a lack of direction with the online program. If anyone knows what the next steps are, please post! Thanks a lot!
