Last year's thread for this program was in full swing by this point with good rumors and nervous applicants. So, how many people out there have applied for the 2014 MEPN program at UHM? I am hoping there are 40 seats and only 40 applicants.

I remember how nervous I was about all of this. If you guys have any questions feel free to pm me.

Hi everyone... I'm sure you are all dying of anticipation - I know that I am... I applied to UH MEPN back in Sept/Oct and am patiently waiting for an admit/deny notification. I know it's early Jan. still but anyone hear anything yet?

Also, mrobinson69600 - I'm wondering what I can expect my first semester to be like (if I get in, that is!)... What does your schedule look like? How many hours do you spend studying? I know it's going to be demanding, but in your opinion, do you think it's doable?

Thanks!

Of course it's doable!! :) Your MEPN pals will help you and it'll go by quick. There are lots of moms like me and even people who worked. I spent about 1- 3 hours studying each day and about 5 - 8 each weekend. I can send you some sample study materials if you like so you can get an idea. Let me know if this is something you want. I also brought study materials wherever i went and any free minute i had was spent reviewing. Expect to put in hours and a significant reduction in social life. Our MEPN program requires you to be flexible. There are sometimes schedule changes and unexpected twists. The staff is always there for any issues you have so always keep them in the loop. You will be in lecture Mon and tues then have Simulation lab and clinicals. Some people choose a weekend clinical. Your cohort will have to come together to decide who goes where. We didnt have any drama with that though. You will have a paper, projects, and weekly discussion forums due. Don't know if you live near UH but if you don't bring recorded lectures with you for the traffic. Rest now, you'll be stressed later.

I really hoped that with rolling admissions there would be some notifications by now. I also learned yesterday- absolutely nothing- when I spoke to the office about the MEPN results.

I saw the sim lab yesterday and I was blown away. I imagine they spent tens of millions of dollars recreating the hospital floor.

Good Luck awd36. Thanks for the post mrobinson

Not sure how much you'll like it after being there all day lol! Just kidding around. It is pretty sweet though. Even if it is rolling admissions its still a long selection process for the staff. Your whole application needs to be looked at carefully by several people. I can imagine it's difficult deciding who should get in when there are so many great applicants.

Anyone else choose the Gerontology track?

I went FNP/ Public Health, but since it is cancelled I may chose gerontology. Frankly, I am open to any of the specialties.

Robinson- Do you get enough "practice" time in the simulator to make you feel confident in your skills?

Sim lab will make you more confident but really the confidence is going to come with continued practice. For example during clinical. For health assessment there is of course lots of opportunity to practice during clinical and on your own time. For specific med surg skills the real life practice opportunities are going to vary according to what clinical site you have. For example one site may have more opportunities to work with tracheostomy care whereas at another site the students will mostly just help passing meds. It's all luck. So you will do your own self study, lecture on the skill, practice all day, and then test on each skill with an instructor in order to get signed off and cleared to practice that skill during clinical. I highly recommend watching the videos included with your textbook and also looking on youtube. The sim lab is also open during selected hours for additional practice which is helpful.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

Has anyone heard anything regarding acceptance/rejection yet?

Thanks!

Nope. I haven't heard back yet. I think at about this time last year, the first wave of acceptances went out. My guess is that because the NP/PH Dual track is on hiatus, they are trying figure out what to do with all the people who applied to that track? I applied for this dual track so I'm kinda nervous about what's gonna happen... I dunno - anyone else hear back?
